April 18 also is the deadline for requesting a tax extension, which gives taxpayers until Oct. 17 to file their returns for 2021. However, there is no extension on payments so if you think you will owe money, it is recommended that you send a payment by April 18 to avoid interest and other penalties.

The IRS estimates that 15.2 million taxpayers will file for an extension, which is Form 4868, in 2022. Nearly 11.6 million taxpayers filed Form 4868 in 2020, based on the most recent data and an estimated 13.56 million filed for an extension in 2021.

How to file income tax returns online: A step

The government sent out checks of $1,200 and $600 to millions of Americans in 2020 as the pandemic shut down most of the country. The good news is those IRS payments do not count as taxable income. The bad news? They are being treated like a refundable tax credit, so theyre similar to an advance on money you would have received as part of your refund.

Do Not Risk Having Your Benefits And Credits Interrupted

Doing taxes on time is the best way to ensure your entitlement to benefits and credits, like the Canada child benefit , the Old Age Security pension payments, and the goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax credit, are not interrupted. Even if you owe tax, dont risk having your benefits and credits interrupted by not filing. If you cannot pay your balance owing, the CRA can work with you on a payment arrangement.

    Why File For An Extension

Filing an extension automatically pushes back the tax filing deadline and protects you from possible failure-to-file and penalties. Penalties for filing late can mount up at a rate of 5% of the amount of tax due for each month that youre late.

    • For example, if you owe $2,500 and are three months late, the late-filing penalty would be $375. x 3 = $375
    • If youre more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is $100 or 100% of the tax due with the return, whichever is less.
    • Filing for the extension wipes out the penalty file by the extension deadline.

If you find yourself owing more than you can afford, you should still file a return.

    • Even if you don’t enclose a check for the balance due, sending in your return protects you from the late-filing penalty that otherwise would keep digging you deeper into a hole.
    • Attach a Form 9465 Installment Agreement Request to your tax return asking the IRS to set up a monthly payment plan to pay off what you owe.

About 2.5 million taxpayers are paying off their bills under such an arrangement and recently the IRS made it easier to qualify. In the past, before the IRS would okay an installment plan, the agency demanded a look at your financesyour assets, liabilities, cash flow and so onso it could decide how much you could afford to pay.

    • That’s no longer required in cases where the amount owed is under $10,000 and the proposed payment plan doesn’t stretch over more than three years.
    • You can also now apply online for the installment agreement. More details are available on the IRS website

Don’t think the IRS is a patsy, though. You may be better off if you can borrow the money to pay your bill, rather than go on an installment plan which means, effectively, borrowing from the IRS.

Applications Are Now Open For A Previously Promised Top

    Ivy Maktimerupdate

In an attempt to help Canadians struggling with record-high inflation and soaring rental prices, the Canadian governments one-time payment of $500 to eligible renters is taking applications starting Monday.

The announcement made in September included doubling GST rebate payments for six months, details of a national dental care program and a one-time $500 top-up for low-income Canadians who see a large chunk of their income going to rent every month.

The program promises to give hundreds of dollars to millions of Canadians over the next two years, and comes at a time when rental prices in Toronto rose 24 per cent in October, the fastest growth of any large market in Canada over the past year surpassing the historically pricier city of Vancouver.

Heres what we know about the top-up to the Canada Housing Benefit.

Who can apply for the one-time $500 payment?

The federal government estimates that 1.8 million Canadians are eligible for the $500 one-time top-up.

You must meet all of the following criteria to apply:

    • You were born on or before Dec. 1, 2007 are at least 15-years-old on Dec. 1, 2022
    • Your principal residence was in Canada on Dec. 1, 2022, meaning you normally live and pay rent in a house, cottage, condo, apartment, duplex unit, college or university residence, trailer, mobile home, or houseboat
    • You are considered a resident of Canada in 2022 for tax purposes

You are required to meet all of the criteria in order to qualify for the $500 top-up.

Does The Irs Ever Negotiate The Amount Owed

Under certain circumstances, the IRS is authorized to resolve a tax liability by accepting less than full payment. An “offer in compromise” is an agreement between a taxpayer and the IRS that settles the taxpayer’s tax debt. There are three circumstances under which the IRS is authorized to compromise:

  • When there is doubt that the tax is correct.
  • When there is doubt that you could ever pay the tax in full.
  • When the tax is correct and you could pay it, but payment would result in an exceptional circumstance, economic hardship, or be unfair and inequitable.
  • Form 656: Offer in Compromise Package should be completed to file an Offer in Compromise with the IRS. Included with the Form 656 package are Form 433-A, Collection Information Statement for Wage Earners & Self-Employed Individuals and Form 433-B, Collection Information Statement for Businesses.

    • You may need to complete the appropriate Form 433 and should be prepared to provide other documentation and explanations as they are requested.
    • Various options are available for accepted Offers in Compromise requests, such as a reduced total payment and scheduled monthly payments.
    • Defaulting on an accepted offer in compromise can result in the IRS filing suit against you and reinstatement of the original tax debt, plus interest and penalties.

How To File Your Income Tax Return Online

If you were overpaid, the IRS says its likely you may owe money back. If You Cant Pay In Full By 31 January 2023

If you already know that you will not be able to pay in full by 31 January 2022, you can set up a payment plan online without speaking to anyone by using the self-serve Time to Pay facility, provided you meet criteria to use this service.

Find out what to do if you cannot pay your tax bill on time.

If you have an outstanding amount after the payment due date, interest will accrue on that amount until it is paid in full, even if you are in a payment plan.

Self-serve Time to Pay allows you to choose the length of the agreement and works out the monthly payments. We recommend you repay any debt as quickly as possible, while making sure the payments are affordable.

Other Options To Pay Your Taxes Over Time

The IRS charges set-up fees for those who need to pay their taxes over time. But there might be more affordable options, such as using a 0% APR credit card to pay your tax bill or even taking out a personal loan.

When comparing costs, calculate how much the interest and fees will cost you over time. But if your is good enough to qualify you for either a 0% interest credit card or personal loan, you should do the math to find out which payment option is cheaper. Then choose the one that costs the least over time and has a monthly payment you can afford.

If a 0% interest credit card is a viable option for you, and once youre approved for the card, the next step is to visit this IRS webpage and pick a payment servicer. Pay1040 charges a fee of 1.87% to use a credit card to pay taxes, and the rewards from some credit cards can even negate this fee.

While People With Income Under A Certain Amount Aren’t Required To File A Tax Return Because They Won’t Owe Any Tax If You Qualify For Certain Tax Credits Or Already Paid Some Federal Income Tax The Irs Might Owe You A Refund That You Can Only Get By Filing A Return

Get to know the IRS, its people and the issues that affect taxpayers

As the Deputy Commissioner of Wage & Investment, its important to me that my organization ensures that everyone can claim the tax credits theyre eligible for, whether its a tax refund, a stimulus payment or federal withholding credits.

Before I talk about 2020 tax returns, I do want to mention that IRS employees are hard at work to process some of last years returns that we werent able to get to because of the many office closures during the pandemic. Its important that you file your 2020 tax return even if your 2019 tax return hasnt been processed yet. We will still process your 2019 return even if youve already gotten your 2020 tax refund.

Why You Should Consider Filing A Tax Return Even If Youre Not Required To File

How To File Your Tax Return In 2022 Online For FREE! (Step By Step)

Filing a tax return is probably not something most people enjoy doing. So why would anyone want to file a tax return if they don’t have to? Well, actually, there are some important reasons you might get a tax refund and you may be eligible for an additional stimulus payment. If youre eligible for future payments or credits, it helps if IRS has your 2020 tax return and direct deposit information on file.

While people with income under a certain amount aren’t required to file a tax return because they won’t owe any tax, if you qualify for certain tax credits or already paid some federal income tax, the IRS might owe you a refund that you can only get by filing a return. Some tax credits are “refundable” meaning that even if you dont owe income tax, the IRS will issue you a refund if youre eligible. Many people miss out on a tax refund simply because they dont file an IRS tax return.

There is usually no penalty for failure to file if you are due a refund, but why miss out on money thats rightfully yours? If, however, you wait too long to file your return and claim a refund, you risk losing it altogether. Thats because an original return claiming a refund must generally be filed within three years of its due date. If you havent filed a tax return for tax year 2017 and had any money withheld from your paychecks or are eligible for tax credits, you need to file by May 17, 2021. If you dont, the money is forfeited, by law, and becomes property of the U.S. Treasury.

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty, according to H& R Block. Then again, not getting your money from the IRS might be punishment enough.

If you owe the IRS, the penalties kick in. TurboTax says penalties can reach 5% of the amount owed for each month you are late. The maximum amount taxpayers can be penalized is 25% of the amount due, according to TurboTax.
