What If I Can’t Afford To Pay The Taxes I Owe

Owing taxes that you don’t have the money to pay can be incredibly stressful. However, you can take action now that will lighten both your financial and psychological burdens.

Consider an IRS payment plan. If you can pay off your tax debt within 180 days, the IRS will let you apply for a short-term payment plan that costs nothing, although you’ll still accrue penalties and interest until your debt is paid off. It’s easy to apply online or at a local IRS office.

If you need more than 180 days, you can apply for a long-term payment plan that costs $31 for automatic monthly bank payments via direct debit, or $130 for non-direct debit payments. Low-income taxpayers — those with adjusted gross incomes at or below 250% of the federal poverty guidelines — can waive the fee for the direct-debit installment plan or pay $43 for the non-direct debit plan.

You might consider other borrowing options outside of the IRS. If your tax liability isn’t too high, you could use a to pay your taxes, assuming you can pay off that debt before the intro period expires. For larger tax debts, you could consider a debt-consolidation loan, though your rate will generally be higher than the 4% currently charged by the IRS.

Irs Late Penalties And Interest

Although the IRS sets an annual deadline for submitting tax returns, taxpayers can still submit their tax declaration after it passes. If the individual does not owe any taxes and are due a refund, they have a maximum of three years to claim it, and must do so before the April tax deadline of that year. This maybe the case for families that failed to claim the 2021 Child Tax Credit and have yet to file a tax return.

However, if you owe taxes the IRS encourages you to do so as soon as possible to limit penalties and interest. Taxpayers that find themselves in this situation could face a Failure to File Penalty, if you havent filed for an extension, and a Failure to Pay Penalty, as well as interest on both. The amount will accrue the longer you delay settling with the IRS.

You should file your individual tax return by April 30. Keep in mind that, if youre paying your taxes by mail, your letter should be postmarked before April 30 to avoid penalties.

If you or your spouse are self-employed, you can file your income tax and benefit return by June 15.

If youre a small business owner, you should file your income tax return by June 15, but you should pay off your balance owing for the previous tax year by April 30.

Corporations should file their income tax returns in up to six months after the end of the tax year, so this date will vary according to the corporations fiscal period.

Assuming The Irs Will Hate You

Theres no need to risk making big mistakes on your tax return or missing valuable deductions because youre rushing to meet the filing deadline and think the IRS will blacklist you for seeking an extension. Filing late is common. In fact, extensions are a fact of life for many investors who dont get their K-1s, which are statements of income from partnerships, until after the tax-filing deadline.

Theres no scarlet letter for filing late as long as you get an extension. If anything, deciding to keep your tax return on your to-do list may warrant a badge of courage.

Can You Request An Extension To File Your Taxes

If you know that youre going to miss the due date for your taxes, you should try to request an extension from the IRS and your state tax-filing agency.

Taxpayers can request an extension no matter how much they earn. If you do so, you have until October 15 to file your federal tax return.

However, a tax-filing extension does not absolve you of your tax liabilities. For instance, let’s say that you owe money to the IRS based on the income you earned in 2021. The United States operates on a “pay-as-you-go” tax-filing system. So, you are required to pay your balance owed by April 18, even if you don’t actually file until October 15.

If you dont make payments on time, you may be subject to penalties. So while a tax extension gives filers extra time to file their paperwork with the IRS, it doesnt give them an extension of time on their tax bill.

When You Owe The Irs Money

If you owe the IRS money from 2021 and you’re late with your tax return, you’ll be penalized for submitting your return after the deadline. Specifically, you’ll pay a 5% penalty for each month or partial month your return is late, up to 25%.

You can avoid that penalty, however, by requesting atax extension That will give you six more months to submit your return. If you meet that extended deadline, you won’t be charged the 5% penalty for being late.

But note that if you get an extension, your tax bill itself will still be due by the original filing deadline. If you’re late with that, you’ll be penalized, but to a lesser degree than you would by being late with your return itself.

What Are The Consequences Of Filing Taxes Late

After the last two years of extended tax deadlines May 17 in 2021, and July 15 in 2020 you might be forgiven if you forget that taxes are actually due in April.

The Internal Revenue Service , however, will not.

That said, even in 2022, filers get a little bit of a break on the deadline. Due to when the weekend falls, and the observation of the Emancipation Day holiday in Washington, D.C. on April 15, you actually get until April 18 this year. And if you live in Maine or Massachusetts, you get another day on top of that, due to the observation of the Patriots Day holiday on April 18 in those two states.

But thats it.

When You’re Due A Tax Refund

Filing a Late Tax Return and Protecting Your Refunds

Technically, there isn’t an IRS penalty for being late with a tax return when you’re owed money by the IRS. Rather, you’ll face a self-imposed penalty — having to wait longer for that money to hit your bank account.

Let’s imagine you’re carrying a balance on your that your tax refund could help you pay off. If you submit your return two months late, you’ll automatically delay your refunds by that much time. But getting that money sooner could prevent you from racking up more interest on the sum you owe.

In some cases, getting your refund sooner could also prevent you from racking up debt in the first place. Many people are struggling these days with higher gas prices and inflated living costs. If your paycheck keeps falling short, but you’re owed $2,000 from the IRS, that refund could be the reason you pay your bills in full or not. But if you’re late with your tax return, you’ll have to wait even longer to get that money.

Request Tax Documents From The Irs

Finding documents from previous years may be challenging for some. Thankfully, the IRS has a form you can fill out to request any tax information they have on file for you for a given year. Form 4506-T allows you to request a transcript of your tax return information, even if you havent filed a tax return. You can request information from the last 10 tax years.

The IRS will send the information it has on record, including information found on forms such as W-2s, 1099s, and 1098s. It wont have information about deductions and credits you may qualify for, though, so youll still need to do some work on your own.

WASHINGTON The Internal Revenue Service encourages taxpayers who missed Mondays April 18 tax-filing deadline to file as soon as possible. Families who dont owe taxes to the IRS can still file their 2021 tax return and claim the Child Tax Credit for the 2021 tax year at any point until April 15, 2025, without any penalty. Years For Filing Back Taxes 3 Years To Claim A Refund

    Late Tax Filing

There might not be a hard limit to how many years you have to file back taxes, but thats not to say that the IRS doesnt want your returns sooner rather than later. You must have filed tax returns for the last six years to be considered in good standing with the IRS. And if you want to claim a tax refund for a past year, youll need to file within three years.

The IRS will eventually intercede and file a substitute tax return for you if you wait too long and if you had any income during the year in question, and this probably would not be in your best interest. They wont worry about claiming any tax credits or deductions that you might be entitled to. Theyll prepare a rudimentary tax return for you without them, so youll most likely end up owing more than if you had prepared the return yourself or paid a professional to do it for you.

Youll have some notice before this happens. Youll receive a Notice of Deficiency CP3219N giving you 90 days to either file the past-due tax return yourselfpreparing it with those deductions and creditsor to file a petition with the Tax Court to argue your case.

    Filing Past Due Tax Returns

  • Tax Exempt Bonds
  • File all tax returns that are due, regardless of whether or not you can pay in full. File your past due return the same way and to the same location where you would file an on-time return.

If you have received a notice, make sure to send your past due return to the location indicated on the notice you received.

Will Your Tax Refund Be Late If You File An Extension

Yes. The timeline for getting your income tax refund depends on when you file. And although you have until Oct. 15 to submit your return if you file an extension, it doesn’t mean you have to wait that long to file.

The IRS is still experiencing delays due to the pandemic and has a backlog of unprocessed returns, so in some situations, it could take much longer than the average 21 days to issue refunds. Some refunds, especially for more complicated returns or those that need corrections, could take months to arrive.

The IRS is asking taxpayers to file electronically this year and to carefully review their details before submitting to avoid any errors that could potentially delay their refund. The agency also asks that you to get your money faster.
