Here’s what counts as an expense: day care, babysitters, transportation to and from care providers, day camp, and before- and after-school programs. The amount of money you’re eligible to get reimbursed for will be sent with your tax refund.

How Long Is A Tax Extension

A tax extension gives you until October 17, 2022, to file your tax return.

However, getting an extension does not give you more time to pay it only gives you more time to file your return. If you cant file your return by the April 18 deadline, you need to estimate your tax bill and pay as much of that as possible at that time.

  • Anything you owe after the deadline is subject to interest and a late-payment penalty even if you get an extension.

  • You might be able to catch a break on the late-payment penalty if youve paid at least 90% of your actual tax liability by the deadline and you pay the rest with your return.

No. If you cant pay your taxes at the scheduled date and you used IRS Direct Pay or its Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, you can change the date there, so long as you do so two days before the scheduled date. If you authorized an electronic funds request, you can contact the U.S. Treasury Financial Agent two days before the scheduled date at 888-353-4537 to change the date.

Will An Extension Delay Any Taxes You Owe To The Irs

Tax Day: Deadline to File Taxes for U.S Expats in 2020

No. Extending your filing deadline doesn’t delay when you have to pay taxes that you may owe. According to the IRS, you need to estimate and pay at least 90% of your tax liability by the deadline to avoid late fees. Otherwise, you will have accrued interest on what you owe, which you’ll eventually have to pay — plus possible penalties — on top of your income taxes.

The late-payment penalty is usually 0.5% per month of the outstanding tax not paid by the filing deadline, maxing out at 25%. The IRS can also issue a late-filing penalty of 5% of the amount due for every month or partial month your tax return is late. If your return is filed more than 60 days after the due date, the minimum late-filing penalty is either $435 or 100% of the unpaid tax .

For individual taxpayers, penalties and interest will stop accruing only when your balance is paid in full. For more on penalties or to work out a payment plan with the IRS, check out its web page.

More Time To File Not More Time To Pay

Its important to remember that the Form 4868 extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. You will still have to pay your taxes by that year’s original due date, even if the IRS grants an extension to file later.

If you think you may owe taxes when it comes time to file your return, you should estimate how much you will owe and subtract any taxes that you have already paid . If your estimate is on the high side and you end up overpaying, you will get a refund when you eventually file your return. You’ll also avoid potential penalties and interest accumulating, which is what can happen if you underestimate your taxes due.

When you file Form 4868, youll need to pay the estimated income tax you owe. Sometimes it’s better to err on the high sideyoull get a refund anyway, while underestimates increase the risk of paying interest on the money owed.

You can pay some or all of your estimated income tax online using a debit or credit card, or through an electronic funds transfer using Direct Pay. It’s also possible to mail a check or money order to make your tax payment, even if you file electronically. Make the check or money order payable to the United States Treasury and include a completed Form 4868 as a voucher.

You do not need to file a paper Form 4868 if you submitted one electronically and are not mailing a payment.

Why Are Taxes Due April 18 2022

The tax filing deadline is a little later this year because Washington, D.C., is celebrating Emancipation Day on April 15. By law, holidays in the nations capital affect tax deadlines just like federal holidays.

Taxpayers in Maine and Massachusetts have even more time to file their returns because those states are celebrating Patriots Day on April 18, making their due date to file April 19.

Didnt File By April 18

There is no penalty for filing a late return after the tax deadline if a refund is due. Penalties and interest only accrue on unfiled returns if taxes are not paid by April 18. The IRS provided taxpayers an additional day to file and pay their taxes following system issues that surfaced early on the April 17 tax deadline. Anyone who did not file and owes tax should file a return as soon as they can and pay as much as possible to reduce penalties and interest. For those who qualify, IRS Free File is still available on IRS.gov through Oct. 15 to prepare and file returns electronically.

Filing soon is especially important because the late-filing penalty on unpaid taxes adds up quickly. Ordinarily, this penalty, also known as the failure-to-file penalty, is usually 5 percent for each month or part of a month that a return is late.

But if a return is filed more than 60 days after the April due date, the minimum penalty is either $210 or 100 percent of the unpaid tax, whichever is less. This means that if the tax due is $210 or less, the penalty is equal to the tax amount due. If the tax due is more than $210, the penalty is at least $210.

In some instances, a taxpayer filing after the deadline may qualify for penalty relief. If there is a good reason for filing late, be sure to attach an explanation to the return.

When To File And Pay

You must file your return and pay any tax due:

Note: The due date may change if the IRS changes the due date of the federal return.

Utah does not require quarterly estimated tax payments. You can prepay at any time at tap.utah.gov, or by mailing your payment with form TC-546, Individual Income Tax Prepayment Coupon.

Valid Extension For Filing

If you can’t file your income tax return by the due date, you can file your return up to six months late with a valid extension.

A valid extension means you can avoid a penalty for filing late. There aren’t any extensions allowing you to pay late. You’ll owe interest on any payments made after the original due date. You’ll also owe penalties if you pay after the extended due date .

Ensuring you have a valid extension

We have two worksheets to help you make sure you have a valid extension to file late:

After you finish the worksheet, do one of the following:

  • If you need to make a payment, you can mail the form at the bottom of the worksheet with your check. Or, you can use our free, secure QuickPay service online to authorize a payment from your bank account.
  • If you don’t need to make a payment, you don’t have to send us Form 51 or Form 41ES. Just be sure to file your income tax return by the extended due date.
What to do if you don’t have a valid extension

If it’s after the original due date and you don’t have a valid extension:

  • File your income tax return as soon as possible.
  • Pay as much as you can now. See our E-Pay page for options.

These steps can greatly reduce the amount of interest and penalties you owe.

More information about interest and penalty

You’ll owe interest and penalties on all overdue tax payments. Idaho law requires us to charge interest, and we can’t waive it.

Need More Time To File Your 2021 Tax Return

Before filing for an IRS tax extension, make sure its right for you. Here are a few common reasons why you may need to push your deadline back:

    • More time needed to track down missing tax documents
    • Unexpected life event
    • Lifes been too busy

If you find yourself unable to complete your 2021 federal tax return by the tax deadline, youll first need to file an extension with the IRS to avoid potential late-filing penalties. Filing an extension will allow you to push your deadline to October 17, 2022.

Its important to keep in mind an extension only pushes back the due date for the filing of your tax documents. It does not give you extra time to pay any taxes you may owe. If you believe you will owe money this year, youll need to estimate the amount after filing for an extension and make a payment by the April filing deadline.

    • two years after you had to file an amended Utah return based on changes to your federal return made by the IRS, or
    • three years from the original due date of the return of a loss year to report a net operating loss carryback.

Will Your Tax Refund Be Late If You File An Extension

Yes. The timeline for getting your income tax refund depends on when you file. And although you have until Oct. 15 to submit your return if you file an extension, it doesn’t mean you have to wait that long to file.

The IRS is still experiencing delays due to the pandemic and has a backlog of unprocessed returns, so in some situations, it could take much longer than the average 21 days to issue refunds. Some refunds, especially for more complicated returns or those that need corrections, could take months to arrive.

The IRS is asking taxpayers to file electronically this year and to carefully review their details before submitting to avoid any errors that could potentially delay their refund. The agency also asks that you to get your money faster.
