The downside to itemizing your deductions is that you must give up the standard deduction. The amount of the standard deduction varies depending on your filing status, and the amounts go up substantially in 2018. For the 2017 tax year, the standard deduction is $6,300 if you file as single or married filing separately, $9,300 if youre head of household, or $12,600 if youre married filing jointly. For 2018, the standard deductions jump to $12,000 for singles and married filing separately, $18,000 for head of household, and $24,000 for married filing jointly.
If the sum of all your itemized deductions, including your tithes, doesnt exceed your standard deduction, it doesnt make sense to itemize. As a result, your tithes wont save you any money on your taxes.

The American Opportunity Tax Credit is a credit for qualified education expenses paid for by an eligible student for the first four years of higher education. You can get a maximum annual credit of $2,500 per eligible student. If you are eligible for any of these tax credits, they can substantially reduce or even eliminate the amount of taxes that you owe. They may also increase the amount of your tax refund. In some cases, taxpayers may be eligible for a refund even if there were no taxes withheld from their income for the year as a result of these tax provisions.

Once your adjusted gross income exceeds $100,000, the deduction starts to phase-out . The phase-out requires you to subtract 10 percent from the total premium amount you paid for each $1,000 of your income that exceeds $100,000 . If your AGI is above $109,000, the deduction is eliminated entirely .
Its important to understand your total itemized deductions only benefit you if they are greater than the standard deduction.

Private Mortgage Insurance is a fee you have to pay when you put less than 20% down on your home. Lenders do this to protect themselves from losses in the event you default on your loan.
If you took our your mortgage after 2007, its possible you can claim a tax deduction on your PMI payments. The current tax law states that you can claim the deduction if your adjusted gross income is $100,000 or less if youre married or $50,000 if youre single.

Under the TCJA, the Child Tax Credit saw a substantial increase to $2,000 per qualifying child. Up to $1,400 of this amount is refundable, depending on your income. This has doubled the previous amount, and the Child Tax Credit was previously only refundable if you were also claiming the Additional Child Tax Credit.

As our lives change, so do our housing situations. Its not common for people to take out a 30-year loan and live in their home for those 30 years anymore. The way we look a housing has changed.
With that said, its safe to assume well sell our homes at some point. Thats where the next benefit comes inthe home sale exclusion. If youve lived in your primary residence for two out of the five years before you sell it, youre excluded from paying taxes on any profits you make for up to $500,000 if youre married and up to $250,000 if youre single.

Maybe. Unless you unenroll from or opt out of the monthly child tax credit payments, you’ll automatically get half of your estimated amount this year from the IRS. Forgoing the monthly payments means that instead of receiving smaller installments, you will simply collect your money when you file your tax return in 2022.
If for whatever reason you wind up getting more child tax credit money than you actually qualify for because of outdated household details, you might need to repay some of the money to the IRS next year. That could be the case in the following scenarios:
- If someone in your household ends up getting a better-paying job this year, increasing the adjusted gross income and pushing you above or out of a previous income bracket.
