Correspond With The Irs By Mail

The IRS advises against it on its website, but you can still mail your paper tax forms and payments if you have no other option. And you can send letters via snail mail as wellstamped and mailed correspondenceif you don’t mind waiting a while for a response.

The best way to get in touch with IRS personnel by mail is to contact the director for your local IRS district or your local Taxpayer Assistance Center. You should allow at least 30 days for a response. It may take 45 days or longer.

Remember that mailing your tax return can delay the processing of your refund. Expect to wait several weeks for your refund to be issued by paper check. It’s more likely to take three weeks or less if you e-file and choose to receive your refund by direct deposit.

Don’t Miss: When’s The Last Day To File Your Taxes

    Review Your Refund Status Details

If you e-file, your status should be available in about 24 hours. Paper returns take up to four weeks before showing up in the system. Electronically filed taxes take three weeks to get your refund in most cases. Paper returns take six weeks.

Most people get to this page and see a three-step process. First is return received. Second is refund approved. Third is refund sent. If it has been less than 21 days since filing an electronic return, you will probably see this graph and where your refund is in the process.

In my case for 2018, the bars vanished after a few weeks and my status was replaced with this message:

I waited until the 21 days had passed and called up the IRS to see what was going on.

Q& a: Do You Have To Send Your W

No, you don’t have to send your W-2 with your tax return. This is true whether you file electronically or through the mail. Instead, you will enter the information found on your W-2 form when our software prompts you or within the appropriate fields on your tax return.

Now, once you submit your tax return, you do need to retain a copy of your W-2, your tax return, and any other related documentation. How long you keep these depends. For most returns, you should keep your tax paperwork for a period of at least three years after your filing date. However, if you file a loss claim or if you don’t report all income you may need to keep the paperwork for up to seven years.

    Keep Calling And Stay Prepared

The process of calling the IRS can be daunting. You may work your way through automated systems only to be stuck on hold for hours, taking time out of your day.

But Bell says you may need to call often to reach a representative. He recommends calling early in the morning or just before the IRS phone lines close for your time zone. You may be able to avoid crowds on the phone lines by calling first thing in the morning or as the day winds down.

But whenever you call, Bell says to be prepared so you can get the help you need when you do reach an IRS agent.

âCitizens may think that once they reach the IRS, theyâve got a live person, that the agent knows about their particular case.â But Bell warns they donât have that info in front of them instantly, so itâs important to have all your information ready to answer the agentâs questions. Have a copy of your most recent return, your previous yearâs return, and any notices from the IRS handy.

In many cases, youâll need to reference information on your previous yearâs taxes to verify your identity during your conversation, such as your adjusted gross income. If your most recent tax return is still processing, and you donât have your old return nearby, youâll have wasted your time on hold because the agent wonât be able to help you, Bell warns.

    Follow Up As Required

It turned out my taxes hit some kind of system error. The first time I called, after the 21-day mark, they said my taxes had an error and the system should resolve the issue itself within the 12-week window after filing.

Once 12 weeks passed, I called again. This time, the gentleman I spoke to said there was a system error that wouldn’t fix itself. He submitted a request to another team to re-process my taxes and said I should get the refund within another eight weeks.

Everyone has a different tax situation. Luckily I wasn’t facing an audit or a penalty. But I did need to call to get my refund resolved. You will probably get different news, but you won’t know until you call to find out.
