When a taxpayer has a spouse or common lawpartner, adonation made by one of them in the current taxation year or any of thepreceding 5 taxation years can normally be claimed by either spouse. Thisis currently an administrative policy of the CRA, but Bill C-43 includeslegislation which would allow this for taxation years 2016 and later.

The tax credit for donations and gifts is in the form of a non-refundable tax credit, and is claimed by completing Schedule 9 of the federal taxreturn. The total actually being claimed for the year is carried fromSchedule 9 to Line 34900 of the federal tax return .

The tax credit for the first $200 of donations is at the lowest personal tax rate , and the tax credit for the amount over $200 is at the highest tax rate for all provinces and territories except Alberta, BC, New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec and Yukon. The federal government, BC and Quebec use the highest personal tax rate fordonations only to the extent that the taxpayers income has been taxed at thatrate.

How Much Can I Deduct

In general, you can deduct up to 60% of your adjusted gross income via charitable donations , but you may be limited to 20%, 30% or 50% depending on the type of contribution and the organization . IRS Publication 526 has the details.

  • The limit applies to all donations you make throughout the year, no matter how many organizations you donate to.

  • Contributions that exceed the limit can often be deducted on your tax returns over the next five years or until theyre gone through a process called a carryover.

  • For the 2020 tax year, you can deduct up to $300 of cash donations on a tax return without having to itemize. This is called an “above the line” deduction. In 2021, the deduction rises to $300 per person rather than per tax return, meaning a married couple filing jointly could deduct up to $600 of donations without having to itemize.

  • The CARES Act eliminated the 60% limit for cash donations to public charities.

Federal Tax Deductions For Charitable Donations

You may be able to claim a deduction on your federal taxes if you donated to a 5013 organization. To deduct donations, you must file a Schedule A with your tax form. With proper documentation, you can claim vehicle or cash donations. Or, if you want to deduct a non-cash donation, you’ll also have to fill out Form 8283.

What Do I Need To Deduct My Donated Items

For your household items and clothing, keep the receipts showing the date and value of your donated goods. For large household items worth more than $500, you will need to include a qualified appraisal with your return.

If you donated a vehicle and its fair market value is at least $250 but not more than $500, you must have a written statement from the qualified organization acknowledging your donation. You might even receive a Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes. This will show the proceeds from the sale of your vehicle.

    In most cases, the amount of charitable cash contributions taxpayers can deduct on Schedule A as an itemized deduction is limited to a percentage of the taxpayers adjusted gross income . Qualified contributions are not subject to this limitation. Individuals may deduct qualified contributions of up to 100 percent of their adjusted gross income.
