‘i’m Going To Try And Not Go Anywhere’: California’s Gas Tax Increases Again On July 1

Quick Answer: How Much Is The New Gas Tax In California ...

SAN DIEGO The state of Californias latest gas increase goes into effect on Thursday and has many residents frustrated.

This automatic increase is due to Senate Bill 1 that was signed into law in 2017 and incrementally raises the fuel excise tax each year to help fund road and bridge repairs. It is an overall 51.1 cents per gallon making California’s total state taxes and other charges on gasoline the highest in the country. Since SB1s passage in 2017, Californias gas tax has increased by 21 cents.

SB1 is also known as the California Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 which divvies the revenue between state and local governments. The state maintains that most of the money goes to fix potholes and rebuild crumbling roads, bridges and public transportation.

In 2018, Proposition 6 was on the ballot to get rid of the gas tax with a yes vote. Voters could keep the gas tax with a no vote. Prop 6 failed at the ballot so we’ll keep having the gas tax increase every year.

Richard Matz, like so many other drivers News 8 talked to, isn’t happy about it.

“The politicians just keep gouging us for more and more,” he said. “It doesn’t even matter if they’re Democrats or Republicans. They just want our money and the thing is, we’re not getting the value we’re paying for it.”Carl Demaio with Reform California said it’s all a scam.

So just how much will this new tax increase cost Californians?

According to state leaders, the gas tax costs a family of four around $800 every year.

California Republicans Push For A Gas Tax Holiday

The California Legislature passed a $262 billion budget on Monday, not included in the appropriations bill was a proposal by Republican state lawmakers to give residents a gas tax holiday for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. They wanted the state to use money from the general fund to make up the difference.

In a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom the GOP lawmakers wrote While this legislature is currently deliberating whether to expand the Golden State Stimulus payments to more Californians, it is important to understand that any action intended to provide financial relief to Californians is undermined by the accompanying rise in gasoline excise taxes, stated the letter.

The latest increase is expected to haul in an additional $83 million next year, according to the Republican lawmakers. They say the gas tax costs the average family of four as much as $800 per year.

How Can You Save Money At The Pump

AAA says the best thing you can do is keep your vehicle properly maintained. You can also minimize the use of AC and roll down your windows. You can even try to combine all of your errands into one trip per day.

Be sure to slow down and drive the speed limit. The U.S. Department of Energy says you use more fuel when driving over 50 miles per hour.

If you plan to hit the road this weekend, the Auto Club of Southern California recommends lightening the load of your vehicle.

“Get rid of extra weight that you don’t need to be driving around. Boxes of paper from the office, golf clubs from the weekend, any additional weight that you don’t need for driving- get it out of the vehicle because the heavier the vehicle is, the more you’re paying to drive it around,” said Doug Shupe, a spokesperson for the Auto Club of Southern California.

Going into the holiday weekend, NBC 7’s Consumer Bob says to plan ahead and avoid heavy tourist areas in order to avoid higher gas prices.

What Is Motor Fuel Tax Revenue Used For

In 2019, revenues from the transportation fund were over $44 billion.

Depending on the jurisdiction, some of the revenue from gasoline and diesel taxes can only be used for transportation related programs like improving infrastructure. Other jurisdictions allow the revenues to be added to the general fund which is used for a variety of programs.

Meanwhile revenues from aviation fuel and jet fuel taxes mainly fund airport and Air Traffic Control operations by the Federal Aviation Administration .

Record Number Of Travelers Take To The Skies

That usually translates into production issues, he said. Well see in the next few days how this might affect retail prices.

Fuel costs are also currently significantly higher than this time last year, when coronavirus stay-at-home orders kept many drivers off road, driving down demand for gas.

Still, Southern California pump prices are at least for now well below the record-setting levels in October 2012, when they ranged from an average of $4.64 to $4.72 per gallon.

But the states already highest-in-the-nation gas tax is set to climb again in one week, to 51.1 cents a 0.60 cent increase that is tied to inflation, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The automatic increase is due to Senate Bill 1, a legislative package that was signed into law in 2017 and incrementally raises the fuel excise tax annually to in part help fund road and bridge repairs.

So when can drivers expect some relief from soaring gas costs? Unfortunately for people looking to hit this road this summer, prices likely will remain higher until fall, according to one expert.

With the economic recovery from Covid continuing, gasoline demand has been very strong. Amidst lower oil production as oil companies struggle to raise output, gas prices have been higher this summer than in the past few years, Patrick De Haan, the head of petroleum analysis at the fuel pricing website GasBuddy.com, explained in a blog post Wednesday.

State Gas Tax Goes Up Starting July 1st

Quick Answer: How Much Is The New Gas Tax In California ...

CENTRAL COAST, Calif. On July 1, California’s gas tax is increasing to 51.1 cents, making Californians pay a total of 83 cents per gallon in state taxes.

In April 2017, Governor Jerry Brown passed Senate Bill 1, also known as the Gas Tax Law, which increased California’s gas tax by $0.12 in November 2017 to raise $5 billion annually. The gas tax is then increased annually according to inflation rates. In July 2019 it increased 5.6 cents, in 2020 3.2 cents, and this year 0.6 cents.

SB1 is also known as the California Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 which splits the revenue between state and local governments. Most of the money going to fix potholes and rebuild crumbling roads, bridges and public transportation.

The gas tax revenue pays for project like $924 million dollars Caltran’s allocated earlier this year to improve critical transportation infrastructure around the state. For example, $13 million dollars from that project went to repair the 1 Highway that suffered from a mudslide in January.

California has the highest gas prices in the United States according to AAA. A campaign for the 2018 election tried to repeal the 2017 Gas Tax Law, but voters ultimately voted against the proposition.

Jose Olivas who works in the trucking industry said it’s the price we pay for the public services we get in California.

On the other hand Santiago Andiano who comutes from Salinas to San Jose for work said he pump’s his tank nearly three times a week.

Why The Gas Tax

The gas tax was created with Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. California lawmakers believed that by applying an incrementally raising tax on gas they could make money to fund road and bridge repairs across the state. Something supporters say is worth the extra dime.

While money from the gas tax is said to be used for transportation projects, some San Diegans fear it could be used for other expenses.

“You’ll be paying up to 51 cents per gallon in taxes supposedly going to roads and infrastructure,” San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond said in a .

Desmond has historically been a vocal opponent of the tax, but he added fuel to the fire in his post Thursday morning. He said that the main intent of the tax is to “get you all on trains and buses.”

California Republicans sent a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom last month asking the state to suspend gas tax collection for the 2021-22 fiscal year due to Californians’ financial hardships during the pandemic. They suggested using money from the state’s general fund to cover the loss. Their request was unsuccessful.

California Gas Prices Are Rising Again Thanks To Another Gas Tax Increase

Californians who are struggling to make ends meet during these tough economic times are going to be in for sticker shock come July 1: gas prices will rise yet again.

Whats behind the increase, you ask? Its not due to rising demand as people begin to slowly return to normalcy following the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. Nor is it due to a refinery shutdown in California or some Middle East oil dispute.

Gas prices are rising in California thanks to state government imposing yet another gas tax increase.

Under state law, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration is required to adjust the motor vehicle fuel and diesel fuel excise tax rates on July 1, 2020, and every July 1 thereafter, by the percentage change in the California Consumer Price Index, as calculated by the Department of Finance.

Starting July 1, California drivers will be paying 50.5 cents per gallon for the gasoline excise tax, up from 47.3 cents per gallon presently. For those who drive a diesel car, the excise tax will jump to 38.5 cents per gallon, up from the current 36 cents. According to the Los Angeles Times, this is the third gas tax increase in the last four years.

When you factor in other state taxes and fees and the federal excise tax of 18.4 cents per gallon, Californians will pay 82.2 cents per gallon in taxes every time they fill up starting July 1. Diesel motorists will pay roughly $1.13 per gallon in government taxes.
