    Understanding Your Tax Refund Results

Our tax return calculator will estimate your refund and account for which credits are refundable and which are nonrefundable. Because tax rules change from year to year, your tax refund might change even if your salary and deductions dont change. In other words, you might get different results for the 2021 tax year than you did for 2020. If your income changes or you change something about the way you do your taxes, its a good idea to take another look at our tax return calculator. For example, you might’ve decided to itemize your deductions rather than taking the standard deduction, or you could’ve adjusted the tax withholding for your paychecks at some point during the year. You can also use our free income tax calculator to figure out your total tax liability.

Using these calculators should provide a close estimate of your expected refund or liability, but it may vary a bit from what you ultimately pay or receive. Doing your taxes through a tax software or an accountant will ultimately be the only way to see your true tax refund and liability.

Do You Even Have To File Taxes

Whether you have to file a tax return this year depends on your income, tax filing status, age and other factors. It also depends on whether someone else can claim you as a tax dependent.

Even if you dont have to file taxes, you might want to do it anyway: You might qualify for a tax break that could generate a refund. So give tax filing some serious consideration if:

    Submit Your Amended Forms

Beginning with the 2019 tax year, the IRS allows you to e-file amended tax returns if you filed the original return electronically and provided that your tax software supplier supports electronically filing amended returns. To amend a return for 2018 or earlier, you’ll need to print the completed Form 1040-X and any other forms you’re amending. Attach any necessary supporting documentation, such as:

    • Any new or amended W-2s or 1099 forms
    • Other forms or schedules that changed, such as Schedule A if you updated your itemized deductions
    • Any notices that you received from the IRS regarding your amended return

Mail all the forms and documents to the address provided in the instructions or electronically file the return if you are able to.

If amending your tax return results in a higher tax bill, you will need to make an additional tax payment. You can mail a check with the amendment or go online and make a payment at the IRS website after logging into their system. By making a payment now instead of waiting for the IRS to send an invoice, you can minimize the interest and penalties you’ll owe.

Keep in mind that if you file an amended tax return on paper rather the e-filing, it can take the IRS eight weeks or longer to process the amendment. You can check the status of your amended return using the IRS’ Where’s My Amended Return? Wait about three weeks from the date you mailed your return for the information to show up in the IRS system.

Information Needed For Your Federal Income Tax Return

Each January, we mail an IRS Form 1099-G to individuals we paid unemployment benefits during the prior calendar year. The 1099-G form provides information you need to report your benefits. Use the information from the form, but do not attach a copy of the 1099-G to your federal income tax return because TWC has already reported the 1099-G information to the IRS. You can file your federal tax return without a 1099-G form, as explained below in Filing Your Return Without Your 1099-G.

A 1099-G form is a federal tax form that lists the total amount of benefits TWC paid you, including:

    • Unemployment benefits
    • Federal income tax withheld from unemployment benefits, if any
    • Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance and Reemployment Trade Adjustment Assistance payments

    Resident Individual Income Tax

Resident taxpayers who are required to file a federal individual income tax return are required to file a Louisiana income tax return,IT-540, reporting all of their income. If a Louisiana resident earns income in another state, that income is also taxable by Louisiana. A temporary absence from Louisiana does not automatically change your domicile for individual income tax purposes. As a resident taxpayer, you are allowed a credit on Schedule G for the net tax liability paid to another state if that income is included on the Louisiana return.

Residents may be allowed a deduction from taxable income of certain income items considered exempt by Louisiana law. For example, Louisiana residents who are members of the armed services and who were stationed outside the state on active duty for 120 or more consecutive days are entitled to a deduction of up to $30,000. In each case, the amount of income subject to a deduction must be included on the Louisiana resident return before the deduction can be allowed.

How to Amend a Previously Filed Tax Return

Getting a sense of which can help you pull together the proper documentation. Here are a few to consider:

    • Savers credit. If you are not a full-time student and are not being claimed as a dependent, you may be eligible for a tax credit if you contribute to a retirement plan. The amount of the credit depends on your filing status and adjusted gross income. For the 2022 tax year, if your filing status is single, you may be eligible if your adjusted gross income is $34,000 or less. If you are married and are filing jointly, you may be eligible if your adjusted gross income is $68,000 or less. However, these numbers are subject to change in future tax years.
    • Student loan interest. You can deduct up to $2,500 in interest payments, depending on your modified adjusted gross income.
    • Charitable deductions. Donating to your alma mater or a favorite charity? Generally, you can deduct qualified charitable donations if you itemize your taxes.
    • Freelance expenses. If you are self-employed, you may be able to claim deductions for work-related expenses such as industry subscriptions and office supplies.

Understand How Your Taxes Are Determined

The government decides how much tax you owe by dividing your taxable income into chunks also known as tax brackets and each chunk gets taxed at the corresponding tax rate. The beauty of this is that no matter which bracket youre in, you wont pay that tax rate on your entire income.

The progressive tax system in the United States means that people with higher taxable incomes are subject to higher federal income tax rates, and people with lower taxable incomes are subject to lower federal income tax rates.
