How Are State Tax Id Numbers Different From Eins

State tax ID numbers are very similar to federal employer identification numbers in that they are assigned to businesses by a government entity and they allow businesses to employ workers.

However, federal EINs are used by the Internal Revenue Service while state tax ID numbers are utilized by that specific state for tax administration purposes, typically by that states department of revenue or other similar agencies.

State tax ID numbers only serve their purpose in your specific state and are meaningless outside of the state. So, if you were to relocate your business to a new state, you would need to register for a state tax ID number with the new state while your federal EIN could remain the same. Agencies and reporting administrations outside of your state will rarely request your state tax ID number.

EINs can also be assigned even if the company has no workers. Unless your work involves processing business documents, such as business loans or license applications, in most cases these identification numbers wont mean much to you until you prepare your income tax return at the end of the year.

What Is The Purpose Of State Tax Ids

State tax IDs serve a couple of main purposes, mainly related to how theyre used to file taxes and hire employees. State tax ID numbers are used by the state and local tax authorities to identify tax reporting entities and to facilitate accurate tax administration.

State tax ID numbers also allow businesses to apply for Resale Certificates , which allows for tax-exempt status. This tax exemption allows a business to purchase goods and products for the purpose of resale at retail. When those goods and products are sold to the final customer, the retailer collects the sales tax.

State tax ID numbers can also be useful for sole proprietors who wish to protect themselves against identity theft.

Do I Need A Tax Id Number

How Can I Get a Tax ID Number

A tax ID number isnt necessarily a requirement for all businesses , but it is impossible to accomplish certain things unless you have one. While not every business needs to get a tax ID number, most will want to. Here are the main reasons why you should consider obtaining a tax ID number for your business:

    • To file taxes separately from your personal taxes: Depending on your business entity, you may be required to obtain a tax ID number so that the business can file taxes separately from your personal tax return. All partnerships, corporations and LLCs that elect to be taxed as a corporation must obtain one to file their taxes.
    • When you want to hire employees: If you plan on hiring someone to work in your business, then you have to have your business tax ID number in order to do so.
    • When you create a Keogh plan: Any tax-deferred pension plan, typically created for a self-employed individual, will need to obtain a tax ID number to open the plan.
    • You may need one just for being in a certain industry: If your business is required to pay certain taxes beyond income tax, then you may be required to have a business tax ID number. An example would be a trucking company that is required to pay excise taxes.

Additionally, some financial institutions may not allow you to open a business bank account without one, and there may be some types of business licenses where one is required, but this is not always the case.

A business tax ID number, also called an employer identification number or federal tax ID, is a unique nine-digit number that identifies your business with the IRS. Owners of most types of business entities need a business tax ID number to file taxes, open a business bank account, obtain a business license, or apply for a business loan.

    How Much Do You Need?

Most people know their social security number by heart, but not all business owners know their business tax ID number. Your EIN isn’t something that you use on a day-to-day basis, so keeping this number top of mind isn’t as easy as remembering your company’s phone number or address.

However, your EIN is essential for some very important business transactions, like filing business taxes and obtaining small business loans. Accuracy and speed matter in those situations. Not having your business tax ID can prevent you from getting crucial funding for your business or meeting a business tax deadline.
