For example, if the mistake you realize you’ve made has to do with math, it’s no big deal: The IRS will catch and automatically fix simple addition or subtraction errors.

And if you forgot to send in a document, the IRS will usually reach out in writing to request it.

If the issue is a small one, the best thing you can do is wait until the IRS has fully processed your initial tax return. At that point, you will be able to see if the IRS simply corrected the error or has asked you to submit more information.

And Kazenoff says it’s OK to cash the refund check from the original return before receiving any additional refund that may be due to you.

“You really should wait until that first return is processed because you want it to go through the system,” says Kazenoff, who previously worked as a senior tax attorney with the Office of Chief Counsel at the IRS. “Better to wait for it to get processed.” The IRS says that most returns are processed within 21 days.

If your error means you actually owe more to the IRS, the process can be a little more complicated. But for most people, it’s still manageable. Read on for what to do if you have a bigger tax mistake to solve.

Correct Your Income And Tax Figures

If you didnt include all your payment documents when preparing your return, or if you receive additional tax documents for the tax year, you would need to file an amended tax return to report the additional income and tax.

For example, a Form W-2 arrives in the mail after the tax deadline, or you forgot to file it.

What Happens If I Have Made A Mistake On My Tax Return

If you made a mistake on your tax return, you need to correct it with the IRS. To correct the error, you would need to file an amended return with the IRS. If you fail to correct the mistake, you may be charged penalties and interest. You can file the amended return yourself or have a professional prepare it for you.

Can I Re-File My Taxes If I Forgot Something?

You can refile your taxes if you need to make a change or forgot to add something. You can file an amended return using Form 1040-X. Form 1040-X is available on the IRS website or at an IRS local office. You can also have a professional prepare the amended return for you.

What Is The Penalty For An Incorrect Tax Return?

There is no specific penalty for an incorrect tax return. However, penalties can apply to your incorrect tax return. For instance, if you have to pay more tax, more penalties will apply in correlation to the increase in tax. On the other hand, if your mistake resulted in less tax, there would be no penalties associated with your corrected return.

Will The IRS Catch It If I Have Made A Mistake?

The IRS will most likely catch a mistake made on a tax return. The IRS has substantial computer technology and programs that cross-references tax returns against data received from other sources, such as employers. When the IRS cross-references your returns with other information, their programs will almost surely catch any mistake or incorrect information reported on your tax return.

How To Use An Income Tax Calculator

We recommend using the Money Saving Expert calculator or the Government’s own to work out how much you will pay.

If you’re using the MSE calculator you will be asked to input how much you earn either by year, month, four weeks, two weeks, a week, a day or an hour.

This means that no matter how often you get paid you can still work it out easily.

Then simply select the current tax year and your age range.

You will then be asked how much you put into a pension a month, although this part is optional.

It will then tell you how much you will take home in a year/ each month, and how much you’ll pay in tax.

It also tells you how much you’ll pay in National Insurance contributions.

When The Irs Catches The Mistake

How To Amend Your Tax Return To Fix A Filing Mistake

Most mistakes the IRS catches can be easily fixed theyre usually mismatches between an official document and what youve reported on your tax return. When they catch a reporting error, youll get a straightforward notice from the agency, spelling out where you went wrong, and how much more you oweor how much more youll be getting back. This often comes up before the IRS has fully processed your tax return basically, theyre giving you a chance to fix it before they finalize their records.

When the IRS catches a mistake, theyll send you a standard notice. All IRS notices and letters have specific numbers you can find the number for your notice at the top right corner of the page. Youll also see contact information right there, in case you have any questions. The notice will tell you three basic things:

  • What the IRS is changing or needs more information about on your tax return
  • Why theyre making the change or asking for more information
  • Where and by when to send your reply
  • If you agree with their correction, simply follow the instructions in the notice. When it calls for a payment, make that payment right away so you dont end up paying more in interest and penalties.

E-filing has become the most popular way to file taxes because of the convenience and increased turnaround time it offers filers. It can also reduce the number of errors in a filing. Part of the reason for this is that online tax preparation software like ours assists our customers through the process. The other part is that the IRS performs a preliminary review of each e-filing before accepting it. This preliminary review works to spot common errors and provide the individual the opportunity to fix them.

While an e-file rejection message is a bit nerve-racking the procedure for correcting and returning it is often not that difficult at all. In fact, depending on the type of error and if it is a minor problem, you may be able to resubmit in a matter of minutes.

Taxpayers are provided 10 days to correct rejected returns. If you are concerned about a notice received close to or after April 15th, do not worry. The IRS allows you until April 20th to correct an e-file rejection and resubmit it electronically.

Here is the procedure for correcting your e-file in case it is rejected:

First determine the error. There are several different errors for which an e-file may be returned, and with each the IRS will transmit a code to help determine what the error is. Note: if you are using our software programs there is no need to look up the code definition, we will do that automatically for you.

Here are a list of common error responses received on 1040 submissions:
