The self-employment tax is just above 15.3%. It usually consists of Medicare and social security.

If youre self-employed, you have to stay on top of your taxes. You have to know how much to pay and when to pay. This is why its helpful to have a software to keep track of your business and personal expenses.

Having software or an accountant do your taxes quarterly can help you avoid potential disaster with the IRS. You want to avoid paying more taxes to the IRS than you already do.

If youre unsure of how to pay taxes quarterly, heres a guide on how to pay taxes to the IRS quarterly that will lower your stress.

When Do I Have To Pay Self

Your federal income tax return for any year is generally due on April 15 of the following tax year. However, because youre self-employed, you may need to make quarterly estimated tax payments to cover both your income tax and your self-employment tax obligations.

If you must make estimated quarterly payments, theyre due on April 15, June 15, Sept. 15 and Jan. 15 of the following year. Those due dates shift to the following business day if the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday. And special rules may apply if youre not a fiscal year taxpayer whose tax year doesnt begin on January 1, or if youre a farmer or fisherman.

If this is your first time dealing with self-employment taxes, knowing how much you should pay can be confusing.

The IRS provides a worksheet on Page 7 of Form 1040-ES to help you calculate your estimated self-employment tax, as well as your deduction for half of your self-employment taxes. You can use this worksheet and the worksheet on Page 8 of Form 1040-ES to calculate both your estimated self-employment tax and estimated income tax for the year. Divide them by four, then pay them in four equal installments by the due dates mentioned above, using the vouchers included in Form 1040-ES.

I Expect My Tax Bill To Be Less This Year Than Last Year What Can I Do

Note: References to income tax include Class 4 NIC.

You can apply to reduce your payments on account. You can do this at any time using form SA303 either online or in paper form up to when the balancing payment is due. You can also make the claim on the previous year’s tax return giving details of the circumstances in the additional information box at the end of the form.

Please bear in mind that if you reduce your payments on account below what they should in fact have been you will have to pay interest on the shortfall from the date each payment on account was due. In some cases, HMRC may charge a penalty if the reduction is excessive. Any taxable coronavirus support payments such as grants received under the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme are treated as taxable income and should be included when calculating any reduction in payments on account.

Example: Robert continued

Robert’s income for 2022/23 is likely to be much lower than that for 2021/22, so he can claim to reduce his payments on account. Robert works out that he will have an income tax bill for 2022/23 of around £2,200. The reduction will be £600. He therefore claims to reduce each of his 2022/23 payments on account by £300 each.

On 8 February 2023, Robert realises that he has reduced his payments on account by too much. He thinks he will have an income tax bill for the year 2022/23 of nearer £2,500 and not £2,200.

How To Estimate Your Taxes

If you use tax-preparation software from a company like H& R Block and owe $1,000 or more, the software typically calculates estimated tax payments. It also generates four Form 1040-ES vouchers for you to use to mail estimated payments for the coming year.

Otherwise, follow the IRS instructions on Form 1040-ES to determine how much you should pay in estimated taxes. Form 1040-ES includes vouchers in case you choose to send those payments by mail.

If you receive your self-employment income irregularly throughout the year, you may be able to pay different amounts throughout the year to more closely match your income. To avoid penalties, pay the minimum amount required for the quarter by the quarters due date.

You can also make more than four estimated tax payments during the year. You can get a 1040-ES payment voucher to fill out online to send with your extra payment.

Freelancers and independent contractors are frequently surprised at the sizable tax bill they face when they have a nice net profit for the year. The high amount is because they not only pay income tax on the profit, but they have to pay self-employment tax as well. Self-employment tax is part of your overall tax liability and is one thing that makes estimating total tax liability difficult.

Expanded Penalty Waiver Available If 2018 Tax Withholding And Estimated Tax Payments Fell Short Refund Available For Those Who Already Paid 2018 Underpayment Penalty

The IRS lowered to 80 percent the threshold required for certain taxpayers to qualify for estimated tax penalty relief if their federal income tax withholding and estimated tax payments fell short of their total tax liability in 2018. In general, taxpayers must pay at least 90 percent of their tax bill during the year to avoid an underpayment penalty when they file. On January 16, 2019, the IRS lowered the underpayment threshold to 85 percent and on March 22, 2019, the IRS lowered it to 80 percent for tax year 2018.

This additional expanded penalty relief for tax year 2018 means that the IRS is waiving the estimated tax penalty for any taxpayer who paid at least 80 percent of their total tax liability during the year through federal income tax withholding, quarterly estimated tax payments or a combination of the two.

Taxpayers who have not filed yet should file electronically. The tax software was updated and uses the new underpayment threshold and will determine the amount of taxes owed and any penalties or waivers that apply. This penalty relief is also included in the revision of the instructions for Form 2210, Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals, Estates, and Trusts.
