Generally, youâll have money withheld from your paycheck for several types of taxes: income, Social Security and Medicare.

Combined, the Social Security and Medicare taxes are called Federal Insurance Contributions Act taxes, and they can be up to 7.65% of your pay. But FICA taxes donât apply to unemployment benefits.

You have to pay federal income taxes on your unemployment benefits, as well as any applicable local and state income taxes.

Similar to how you receive a W-2 or 1099-MISC tax form with your wages and income and use those to prepare your tax return, your state will send you the IRS copies of Form 1099-G with a record of how much you received in unemployment. Youâll include this amount in your income for the year when you file your taxes.

Through July 31, 2020, your taxable unemployment benefits may include an additional $600 a week as part of Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act stimulus. The extra benefit also counts as taxable income. The separate one-time stimulus check that was also a component of the CARES Act is not, however, subject to income taxes.

  • Based on how much your employee typically earns , estimate their average quarterly gross earning.

  • Calculate the FUTA for that amount .

  • Count the number of paychecks the employee will receive for the quarter. Then divide the FUTA you calculated by the number of paychecks.

  • Every time you withdraw your employeeâs pay, set aside the resulting amount in an appropriately named accountâ like “payroll taxesâ or “unemployment taxesâ. The money you set aside should come from your retained earnings.

  • To simplify things, you can carry out these calculations for each employee, and set aside a lump sum every pay cycle.

    What Is The State Unemployment Tax Act

    The State Unemployment Tax Act is a tax that states use to fund unemployment benefits. Employers pay SUTA tax, also known as state unemployment insurance tax, based on their employees’ wages. Most states require employers to remit their SUTA taxes quarterly.

    Not all employers are required to pay SUTA taxes. Some nonprofit organizations can instead reimburse their state directly for any unemployment benefits that former employees go on to use.

    Independent contractors are responsible for paying their own taxes. If you have contractors on your team, you do not have to calculate and pay SUTA tax on their behalf.

    New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Alaska are the only three states that require employers and employees to pay SUTA tax. If your business operates in one of these states, you need to also withhold SUTA tax from each of your employees’paychecks.

    If your company has a FUTA Tax liability in any one quarter of the year of more than $500, you must make a deposit by the last day of the month the follows the end of the quarter. The payment dates are:

    • For 2nd quarter ending June 30, payment is due July 31
    • For 3rd quarter ending September 30, payment is due October 31
    • For 4th quarter ending December 31, payment is due January 31

If your liability in Quarter 2 is $200, your accumulated liability is $550 , and you must make a deposit by July 31. Since you have made a deposit for Quarters 1 and 2, if your tax liability for Quarter 3 is under $500, you do not need to make a deposit for the 3rd Quarter.

    If your unemployment tax liability at the end of the year is over $500, you must make a deposit by January 31 of the following year or with your Annual Unemployment Tax Report on Form 940.

    Your businesss SUTA tax rate can fall anywhere within your states range, but you can take steps to reduce your rate.

    Most states apply fixed SUTA tax rates to businesses registered in the last two or three years. As they age, their rate is determined by the businesss industry and history of former employees filing for unemployment benefits.

    The SUTA rate assignment incentivizes employers not to lay off and fire a high proportion of their employees: Companies with high employee turnover tend to see higher SUTA tax rates.

    Each Professional Employer Organization which co-employs one or more individuals with a client in Tennessee must complete and file the Report to Determine Status, Application for Employer Number . The PEO will then be assigned an Aggregate State Number. In addition, the PEO must file an Application for Client Number for each Tennessee client and must notify the Department of Labor and Workforce Development in writing of any client additions or deletions during the quarter in which the change occurs.

    The PEO must keep separate records and must file separate quarterly Premium and Wage Reports for each client under their Client Number. The clients premium rate each quarter will be the premium rate for the PEOs Aggregate State Number.
