We Are Going To Show You How To File Taxes Online With Turbotax

The step-by-step process offered by TurboTax makes filing your taxes easier than ever before. We highly recommend using it because its the fastest way to get your refund and filing with paper forms will result in a delay in processing.

Filing your taxes online couldnt be easier. You can create an account with TurboTax and begin filing your tax return.

First, TurboTax will ask you some basic questions. The first few questions involve where you live and whether youre married. After that, youll be asked to give a basic financial picture.

Youll be asked to give pieces of information like:

  • Do you have an employer-sponsored retirement plan?
  • Have you made any charitable donations this year?
  • Are you working for yourself?

These questions are vital for TurboTax to understand which tax forms youre going to need to complete your tax return successfully.

The next stage of the process now that you have received a filing status is to provide your 1099, W-2, and any additional forms relevant to your situation. If your employer has a partnership with TurboTax, you only need to provide your employer identification number, and your form will automatically be imported.

If not, you can enter in the information from your W2 form.

Finally, youll get a number of questions that further checks your status, such as whether you were involved in a natural disaster, whether you were in higher education, or if you have additional tax breaks because of disability or previous military service.

Major Tax Breaks From Tax Reform

TurboTax 2012 Software Versions, Features and Prices

You pay income and capital gains taxes on any income earned or gains received, respectively. To lower this overall tax liability, Congress has created several tax breaks to entice taxpayers to make certain desirable actions. In doing so, you’re able to reduce your tax liability. If you decide to file an amended return, make sure you have a clear understanding of the tax changes, extensions, and credits.

Tax changes in 2018 include:

While most of these changes passed into law at the end of 2017, the majority went into effect in 2018. Due to the impermanent nature of the tax reform bill, all of these changes are set to revert to 2017 law after 2025 with the exception of the corporate tax rate. This change is not set to expire. The rate is 21%, down from 35% seen in 2017 prior to the law passing.

Finally, keep in mind that not every state adopted the new federal tax policies. Some states, like California, Texas, Minnesota, North Carolina, South Carolina, and New Hampshire, opted to not change their own laws to be more favorable to residents.

Understand Tax Deduction Requirements

Before you get too far along in the tax year, you should evaluate all available IRS deductions and the requirements to claim them. By doing this beforehand, you can be proactive in preparing to claim a deduction at the end of the year.

For example, if you know you are heading back to school soon and will need a loan to pay your tuition, it may be better to take out a student loan rather than using a credit card. This is because you can deduct the interest that accrues on a qualified student loan, but not on a credit card, even if used for educational purposes.

Third Stimulus Check And The Recovery Rebate Credit

How to File Your Taxes Online For Beginners (TurboTax Tutorial) ð§¾

This year on your tax return, you may receive a credit known as the Recovery Rebate Credit. Its possible to get this credit if your adjusted gross income on your 2021 tax return is smaller than the one that was used to calculate your third stimulus check, if you have more dependents, or if you didnt receive all of what you were eligible for.

You should take care to NOT mix information from your 2020* and 2021 tax years. Do not include information regarding the first and second stimulus payments received in 2020, or the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit, on your 2021 tax return.

New this year, the IRS is sending Letter 6475 now through March 2022 with the total amount of your stimulus payment issued by the IRS in 2021. This letter has all the info you need to report the correct amount of third stimulus you received. Hold on to this letter because you will need it when filing your tax return. If you are married filing jointly, you and your spouse will need both letters when completing your tax return.

You may have also received Notice 1444-C from the IRS during 2021 after each payment, but you should use the information on IRS letter 6475. Review this information on your IRS online account to report the correct amount received and claim the recovery rebate credit you are eligible for.

To claim any remaining credit for 2021, eligible people must file a 2021 tax return, even if they usually do not file taxes.

How To File An Amended Return

To proceed with preparing and filing your amended return, all you need to do is file Form 1040-X, Amended Tax Return, along with the corrected or additional documents you didn’t file with your original return. This will amend your return and give you an accurate picture of your tax situation. Federal returns can now be amended by electronically filing them, but only beginning with the 2019 tax year .

The IRS requires that you file an amended return with a claim for refund within three years of the day you filed your original return, or within two years of the day you paid outstanding tax, whichever is later. If you file a return before the original due date of the return , the IRS treats it as though you filed it on the due date. Tax withholding from sources such as a W-2 is deemed to be tax paid on the due date.

If you experienced changes related to any of the items above that have occurred since tax reform went into effect, you should file amended returns as soon as possible to correct any errors or oversights.
