Whats The Deadline To Pay Your Taxes

Even if you successfully apply for an extension, the payment deadlines donât change. The penalty for late payment is 0.5% of the taxes owed each month compared to 5% for late filing. Regardless of whether you can pay your small business taxes, it always pays off to file on time.

If youâre sending your return via snail mail, the IRS considers your return âon timeâ if itâs addressed correctly, has enough postage, and is in the mail before the end of business on your filing deadline. Otherwise, you can e-file your return before midnight on your tax filing deadline day.

If youâre self-employed, your business probably pays taxes in four sums throughout the year, rather than on one day. These are called estimated tax payments and you can think of them as a prepayment of your income and self-employment taxes . The due dates for these 2022 payments are April 18, June 15, September 15, and January 16 .

Tax Deposit Due Dates

In general, there are different due dates for the deposit of taxes depending on the return the taxes are reported on, past filing history and additional factors. These deposit due dates often are different from the filing due dates of tax returns.

You must use the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System to make all federal tax deposits. Depositing the taxes alone does not report the taxes or relieve you of the requirement to file a return. If the due date for making your deposit falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, then you may make your deposit on the next business day.

Contributions to a traditional 401 reduce your total taxable income for the year.

For example, lets say you make $65,000 a year and put $19,500 into your 401. Instead of paying income taxes on the entire $65,000 you earned, youll only owe taxes on $45,500 of your salary. In other words, saving for the future lets you shield $19,500 from taxes . Many employers offer to match a portion of what you save, meaning that if you contribute enough to your account, you’ll also nab some free money.

Tax Day For Maine And Massachusetts Residents

Residents of Maine and Massachusetts got an extra day this year until April 19 to file their federal income tax return. Why? Because Patriots’ Day, an official holiday in Maine and Massachusetts that commemorates Revolutionary War battles, fell on April 18 this year. So, for the same reason Tax Day was moved from April 15 to April 18 for most people , the IRS couldn’t set the tax filing and payment due date on April 18 for taxpayers in those two states. As a result, the deadline was moved to the next business day for Maine and Massachusetts residents, which was April 19.

Why Are Taxes Due April 18 Instead Of April 15 This Year

Tax Day is usually on April 15. But when a tax deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, it’s pushed back to the next available business day. April 15 was on a Friday this year, so the weekend rule didn’t apply. But Emancipation Day was observed in the District of Columbia on April 15. The holiday honors the end of slavery in Washington, D.C. Since April 15 was a legal holiday in D.C., the IRS couldn’t require tax returns to be filed that day. The next business day was April 18 so that became the new federal income tax filing deadline this year for most people.

File For An Extension By Tax Day

OMG

If you can’t finish your return by the April 18 tax deadline, file IRS Form 4868. This will buy most taxpayers until Oct. 17 to file their tax returns. See more about how extensions work.

Note: A tax extension gets you more time to file your return, not more time to pay your taxes. You still must pay any tax you owe, or a good estimate of that amount, by the tax deadline. Include that payment with your extension request or you could face a late-payment penalty on the taxes due.

State Income Taxes Due Friday Following 90 Day Extension

ANNAPOLIS ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Comptroller Peter Franchot reminds Maryland taxpayers that tomorrow, Friday, July 15, 2022, is the deadline to file and pay state individual income taxes for tax year 2021.

“Many Marylanders and their families are still struggling from the hits theyve taken during the pandemic. My decision to push back the filing deadline for the third straight year has given taxpayers who need it some extra breathing room, Comptroller Franchot said. Agency staff will help set up payment plans for those who are unable to pay the full amount owed, however all taxpayers must file and pay what they can by July 15.

Earlier this year, Comptroller Franchot extended the individual income tax filing and payment due date to Friday, July 15, 2022. No interest or penalties will be assessed if returns are filed and taxes owed are paid by Friday. The deadline for first and second quarter individual estimated tax payments for tax year 2022 was also moved to July 15, 2022. These extensions do not apply to pass-through entities or corporate estimated tax filers.

Since the start of tax season January 24, the Comptrollers Office has issued nearly $2.3 billion in refunds to more than 2.1 million taxpayers. Last year, the Comptrollers Office processed nearly 3.3 million returns and disbursed $3.2 billion in refunds.

The agency urges filers to consult our blocked tax preparers list prior to turning over any personal identifiable information to a third party.

If you can’t complete and file your tax return by Monday, you’ll want to file a tax extension, particularly if you owe. Free tax software like Cash App Taxes can help you file an extension as well as finish your return. If you are expecting a refund, there’s no penalty for filing late.

Most state income tax returns are also due on April 18, although a handful of states have different deadlines. And, of course, some states don’t require you to file income taxes at all.

Who Pays Estimated Taxes

Anyone who projects their tax bill to be under $1,000, after taking into account any withholding and refundable tax credits such as earned income credits and premium tax credits, doesn’t need to bother with estimated taxes. Self-employed people, small business owners, and anyone else who receives income that has not had taxes withheld from it needs to pay estimated taxes to avoid or minimize penalties for late payment.

If you receive pension or annuity income you can ease the burden of estimated taxes by filing Form W-4P with the plan administrators or other parties who pay out the benefits to have tax withheld. You can also opt for voluntary withholding on payments such as Social Security benefits and unemployment benefits by filing Form W-4V.

If you have income from an employer and independent contractor income or investment income, then you can increase the amount of your withholding from your paycheck by filing a new Form W-4withyour employer in lieu of paying estimated quarterly taxes.
