Its tempting to opt out of withholding tax on your unemployment benefits. But foregoing that option is an expensive choice. The tax bill racks up quick. Even if you havent done it yet, you can still elect to withhold your tax liability directly from your unemployment income.
Federal law allows you to have a flat 10% withheld from your benefits to cover your tax liability. Simply fill out Form W-4V, Voluntary Withholding Request, and send it to the agency paying your benefits. Before completing the form, however, check with the payor to see if they have their own withholding request form. Following their procedure will help expedite the request.
How To Claim Your $10200 Unemployment Tax Break If You Already Filed Taxes
Tax experts often advise taxpayers to file their taxes early to expedite their refund or to be in a better position to pay their tax bill by April 15. But the strategy may have backfired this year, as early filers who paid taxes on their federal unemployment benefits missed out on an important tax break. Under the American Rescue Plan signed into law Thursday, the IRS will make the first $10,200 in unemployment benefits from 2020 tax-free. Typically, unemployment is considered taxable income at your regular tax rate, which depends on your tax bracket based on income.
Filing an amended return is not a difficult process, but tax experts have advised people to wait a bit longer to file the amended return in case the IRS finds a way to make the adjustments automatically. Robert Kerr, a Washington, D.C.-based IRS enrolled agent and tax consultant said waiting can give the IRS time to figure out how to handle these returns, MarketWatch reported. He said it also allows tax software companies to update their systems based on the tax law change. Its in everyones interest to get this sorted quickly, he told MarketWatch.
When the time comes to file an amended return, taxpayers can do so online using IRS Form 1040-X. The IRS has made it possible this year to file the amended return electronically as well as by mail.

How Much Taxes Do You Pay On Unemployment
Unemployment income doesn’t have a special tax rate. Any unemployment compensation reported on your tax return will be added to your gross income. How much you owe in income taxes depends on your filing status and, of course, how much you earn.
Tax brackets are based on taxable income. Taxable income is your gross income all earnings not specifically exempt by the IRS, including unemployment compensation reduced by any deductions you qualify for.
If your taxable income for 2020 is $50,000 as a single filer, that puts you in the 22% tax bracket, because you earn more than $40,125 but less than $85,525. This is known as your marginal tax rate.
But while 22% of $50,000 is $11,000, you’re not paying $11,000 in taxes. Your tax bracket applies to only the amount you earn above the minimum income threshold for that bracket. For income below that limit, you pay the same amount of federal income taxes as everyone else, even if they earn less overall.
How Taxes On Unemployment Benefits Work
Unemployment benefits are income, just like money you would have earned in a paycheck. Youll receive a Form 1099-G after the end of the year, which will report in Box 1 how much you’ve received in the way of benefits. The IRS will receive a copy as well.
You would have paid taxes on the full amount of your unemployment benefits if you filed your taxes before the ARPA was passed. The IRS issued a statement on March 31, 2021, urging taxpayers who had already filed not to file an amended return related to the new legislation. The IRS will recalculate and adjust all tax returns received prior to the ARPA that report unemployment income during the spring and summer of 2021 and will issue any resulting refunds.
You’ll have to pay taxes on the remaining amount if you received more than $10,200 in unemployment compensation. Your 1099-G will have the information you’ll need to transfer to your tax return.
Unemployment compensation has its own line on Schedule 1, which accompanies your 1040 tax return. Youll transfer the amount in Box 1 of Form 1099-G to Line 7 of Schedule 1, and then the withholding amount in Box 4 of the 1099-G goes directly onto your 1040 tax return on Line 25b.
The amount that was withheld will appear in Box 4 if you asked to have income tax withheld from your benefits.
You must still report your unemployment compensation on your tax return, even if you dont receive a Form 1099-G for some reason.

How Do I Apply For Unemployment
To apply for unemployment insurance, visit CareerOneStop.org and select your state for specific instructions. It typically takes two to three weeks of processing time after you file your claim to get your first payment, according to the Department of Labor. Depending on the state, you can choose to receive your payment as a direct deposit, check, or debit card.

Use the information from the form, but do not attach a copy of the 1099-G to your federal income tax return because TWC has already reported the 1099-G information to the IRS. You can file your federal tax return without a 1099-G form, as explained below in Filing Your Return Without Your 1099-G.

Requesting A Duplicate 1099
If you do not receive your Form 1099-G by February 1, and you received unemployment benefits during the prior calendar year, you may request a duplicate 1099-G form by phone:
We cannot process requests for duplicate 1099-G forms until after February 1 because throughout January we are still mailing the original forms.
You do not need a paper copy of Form 1099-G to file your federal tax return the IRS only needs the total amount of benefits TWC paid you during the previous calendar year and the amount of taxes withheld.
How To Track Your Refund And Check Your Tax Transcript
The first way to get clues about your refund is to try the IRS online tracker applications: The Where’s My Refund tool can be accessed here. If you filed an amended return, you can check the Amended Return Status tool.
If those tools don’t provide information on the status of your unemployment tax refund, another way to see if the IRS processed your refund is by viewing your tax records online. You can also request a copy of your transcript by mail or through the IRS’ automated phone service by calling 1-800-908-9946.
Here’s how to check your tax transcript online:
1. Visit IRS.gov and log in to your account. If you haven’t opened an account with the IRS, this will take some time as you’ll have to take multiple steps to confirm your identity.
2. Once logged in to your account, you’ll see the Account Home page. Click View Tax Records.
3. On the next page, click the Get Transcript button.
4. Here you’ll see a drop-down menu asking the reason you need a transcript. Select Federal Tax and leave the Customer File Number field empty. Click the Go button.
5. The following page will show a Return Transcript, Records of Account Transcript, Account Transcript and Wage & IncomeTranscript for the last four years. You’ll want the 2020 Account Transcript.
6. This will open a PDF of your transcript: Focus on the Transactions section. What you’re looking for is an entry listed as Refund issued, and it should have a date in late May or June.

Without this new tax exemption, many people who claimed unemployment benefits in 2020 could have faced an unwelcome tax bill.
