Over the last decade, North Carolina has been steadily reducing its corporate tax rates, which benefits the economy and its workers by spurring economic development, encouraging wage growth, and boosting productivity.
Its no surprise, then, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported in 2015 that North Carolinas economy grew at an annual rate of 2.8% while overall economical growth in the United States didnt even exceed two percent.

Due Dates For North Carolinas Sales Taxes
If a businesss tax liability is less than $20,000 per month, but at least $100 per month, the business must file monthly. The tax due date for monthly filers is on or before the 20th day of the month following the previous month. For example, taxes collected in January are due on or before February 20.
If a business consistently has less than $100 per month, the business taxpayer can file sales and use tax returns quarterly. The returns and payment are due on or before the last day of the month following the end of the quarter .
Businesses that file Forms E-500 or E-500E and have a tax liability of at least $20,000 per month must prepay the next months estimated taxes on or before the 20th day of each month. Filers who are required to make prepayments and use Form E-500 must pay online they cannot file a paper form and remit payment by mail. Those who file Form E-500E should file paper returns and submit payment by ACH Debit, ACH Credit via electronic funds transfer via the e-Business Center.
The prepayment must be:
- The total amount of tax due
- The amount of tax due for the same month in the preceding year or
- The average monthly tax liability for the previous calendar year.

North Carolina Income Taxes
North Carolina moved to a flat income tax beginning with tax year 2014. For tax year 2021, all taxpayers pay a flat rate of 5.25%. That rate applies to taxable income, which is income minus all qualifying deductions and exemptions, as well as any contributions to a retirement plan like a 401 or an IRA.
In North Carolina, taxpayers can claim itemized deductions for charitable contributions, mortgage interest and property taxes. The deductions for the latter two categories cannot exceed $20,000. Most other deductions that were previously available in North Carolina, including the Net Business Income deduction and the College Savings Program deduction, are no longer available as of 2014.
Taxpayers who dont itemize their deductions can claim North Carolinas standard deduction. The standard deduction for the 2021 tax year is $10,750 for single filers, $21,500 for joint filers and $16,125 for heads of household. However, there is no personal exemption in North Carolina for filers, spouses or dependents.
