Calculate Your Gross Compensation

IRS Releases New Inflation Tax Brackets. What This Means For You

The amount an employee makes before taxes is deducted is referred to as gross pay.

Gross pay for hourly employees is calculated by multiplying the number of hours worked during the pay period by the hourly rate. For instance, if your receptionist worked 40 hours per week at $20 per hour, his weekly gross salary would be 40 x $20, or $800.

Remember to include in any overtime compensation, which is usually 1.5 times the regular rate when an hourly employee works more than 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week. In this scenario, your receptionist would be paid $20 for the first 40 hours worked, plus $30 for the 41st and any additional hours done during the week.

Salaried personnel are free from overtime laws, therefore their gross compensation will normally stay the same from pay period to pay period. Simply multiply their annual compensation by the number of pay periods. For example, if a manager makes $50,000 per year and is paid twice a month, his gross income per pay period is $2,083.33 .

Gross salary also includes any commissions, tips, or bonuses earned by the employee.

Are There Penalties And Interest If I File Late Or Fail To File

If you do not make your sales tax payment on time, it is considered delinquent. If you make a smaller payment than the amount due, then it is called deficient. In both cases, both penalties and interest apply to the unpaid amount. Penalties may also be assessed if you pay by a method other than electronic payment.

The penalty is 5% of the unpaid amount for each month or partial month the tax is unpaid, for a maximum of 25%. Interest is calculated at the current rate, which can be found here. To calculate the interest, use the following formula:

Original liability * Rate * # of days delinquent / 365.25

If you arent comfortable calculating it, the Tennessee Department of Revenue will send you a bill for the correct amount.

    Tennessee Taxation Of Passthrough Entities

Editor: Mary Van Leuven, J.D., LL.M.

Tennessee’s entity classification rules only partially conform to the federal entity classification rules. An insufficient understanding of the rules, like a little knowledge, can be dangerous to taxpayers when determining which entity has a filing responsibility in Tennessee. Many entities that are disregarded for federal, and most other states’, income tax purposes are regarded for Tennessee franchise and excise tax purposes. Coupled with mandatory separate legal entity filing for most taxpayers, but required combined filing for captive real estate investment trust affiliated groups and unitary groups of financial institutions, determining the proper Tennessee filer can be challenging.

Not only is ascertaining the proper filing entity in Tennessee more difficult because of the state’s partially nonconforming rules on entity classification, but issues also arise in determining which entity reports the gain from selling interests in entities that are disregarded for federal purposes but regarded for Tennessee purposes. That can mean the difference between no Tennessee FAE tax on a transaction and substantial tax.

    Total Tax Burden: 819%

The Lone Star State loathes personal income taxes so much that it decided to forbid them in the states constitution. Still, because infrastructure and services must be paid for somehow, Texas relies on income from sales and excise taxes to foot the bill.

Sales tax can be as high as 8.25% in some jurisdictions. Property taxes are also higher than in most states, the net result of which is a total tax burden of 8.19% of personal income. Nevertheless, Texans overall tax bite is still one of the lowest in the U.S., with the state ranking 19th. Texas is average for affordability at 22nd in the nation, but it was ranked 31st by U.S. News & World Report on the Best States to Live In list.

Texas spent $9,827 per pupil on education in 2019, ranking it below average among the 17 Southern states, and it received a D grade for its school funding distribution in 2015. In 2021 the ASCE awarded it a grade of C for its infrastructure. Texas spent $6,998 per capita on healthcare in 2014, the seventh-lowest amount in the U.S.

One advantage of living in a no-tax state is that the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions imposed by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will likely not have as great an impact as it does on residents of high-tax states, such as California and New York.
