What Is The Last Day To Contribute To My Retirement Account For 2019

As with other elements of the extension, individuals can wait to make 2019 contributions to their retirement accounts normally due April 15, 2020 until July 15, 2020. Consider using this extra time to set aside more money in your retirement accounts if you’re able. You can contribute a maximum of $6,000 to an IRA for 2019, plus an extra $1,000 if you’re 50 or older.

You don’t need to wait to file your tax return to make this contribution, however. If you know how much you’ll contribute by the tax deadline, you can put this on your tax return and make the actual contribution by the new deadline.

More Time To File And Pay

The IRS Collections Process

If you wont be able to file by the original May 1 deadline, dont worry. Everyone has an automatic 6-month filing extension in Virginia, which moves the filing deadline from May 1 to November 1 for most taxpayers .

In addition, as part of the state’s COVID-19 tax relief actions, if you owe taxes, you have until June 1, 2020 to pay without any penalties or interest.

This also applies to individual extension payments for Taxable Year 2019 as well as the first estimated income tax payments for Taxable Year 2020.

What Can I Do To Avoid Filing Mistakes

Here are some recommendations from the IRS:

File electronically. Taxpayers can use their computer, smartphone or tablet to file their taxes electronically, whether through IRS Free File or other e-file service providers, to help reduce mistakes. Tax software guides people through each section of their tax return using a question-and-answer format. Enter information carefully. This includes any information needed to calculate credits and deductions. Using tax software should help prevent math errors, but taxpayers should always review their tax return for accuracy.

Use the correct filing status. Tax software, including IRS Free File, also helps prevent mistakes when selecting a tax return filing status. If taxpayers are unsure about their filing status, the Interactive Tax Assistant on IRS.gov can help them choose the correct status, especially if more than one filing status applies.

Answer the virtual currency question. The 2021 Form 1040 and 1040-SR asks whether at any time during 2021, a person received, sold, exchanged or otherwise disposed of any financial interest in any virtual currency. Taxpayers should not leave this field blank but should check either Yes or No.

Keep a copy. When ready to file, taxpayers should make a copy of their signed return and all schedules for their records.

Free File Available January 14

IRS Free File will open January 14 when participating providers will accept completed returns and hold them until they can be filed electronically with the IRS. Many commercial tax preparation software companies and tax professionals will also be accepting and preparing tax returns before January 24 to submit the returns when the IRS systems open.

The IRS strongly encourages people to file their tax returns electronically to minimize errors and for faster refunds as well having all the information they need to file an accurate return to avoid delays. The IRS’s Free File program allows taxpayers who made $73,000 or less in 2021 to file their taxes electronically for free using software provided by commercial tax filing companies. More information will be available on Free File later this week.

Tax Day For Individuals Extended To May 1: Treasury Irs Extend Filing And Payment Deadline

  • IRS Statements and Announcements
  • IR-2021-59, March 17, 2021

WASHINGTON The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced today that the federal income tax filing due date for individuals for the 2020 tax year will be automatically extended from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021. The IRS will be providing formal guidance in the coming days.

“This continues to be a tough time for many people, and the IRS wants to continue to do everything possible to help taxpayers navigate the unusual circumstances related to the pandemic, while also working on important tax administration responsibilities,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “Even with the new deadline, we urge taxpayers to consider filing as soon as possible, especially those who are owed refunds. Filing electronically with direct deposit is the quickest way to get refunds, and it can help some taxpayers more quickly receive any remaining stimulus payments they may be entitled to.”

Individual taxpayers can also postpone federal income tax payments for the 2020 tax year due on April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021, without penalties and interest, regardless of the amount owed. This postponement applies to individual taxpayers, including individuals who pay self-employment tax. Penalties, interest and additions to tax will begin to accrue on any remaining unpaid balances as of May 17, 2021. Individual taxpayers will automatically avoid interest and penalties on the taxes paid by May 17.

Request Your Tax Refund Before You Lose It

Itâs still a good idea to file your taxes after the due date if you expect a refund, but you donât want to wait too long.

The IRS usually allows you three years from the due date of your tax return to request a refund. After this time, youâll forfeit your tax refund. For example, your 2021 tax return is due on April 18, 2022. From that date, you have three years to request a refund. In 2025, if you donât file your 2021 return by the tax due date, youâll lose your tax refund. The U.S. Treasury now owns your money.

That means if youâre one of the estimated 1.5 million taxpayers owed money on their 2018 taxes who have yet to file, youâre running out of time.

The IRS said it has $1.5 billion of unclaimed 2018 tax refunds, but these taxpayers must claim it by April 18. Maine and Massachusetts tax filers have until April 19, because the tax deadline falls on Patriot Day, an official holiday observed by both states.

The Taxation And Revenue Department Encourages You To File Electronically Whenever You Can

Electronic filing is safe and secure, and it offers the fastest service for a refund. Access online filing to file over the internet at no charge . You may choose to file electronically through your tax preparer or by using approved software on a personal computer. Individuals who both file and pay their income tax electronically using our website, a personal computer or a tax professional have an extended filing deadline of April 30. If April 30th is on a Saturday, Sunday or legal state or national holiday, the due date is the next business day.

The Department offers two ways to file a return electronically, both allowing you to file either a refund return or a tax-due return. File electronic returns through the Departments internet website or the Federal/State Filing Program. Certain restrictions on who may file and the types of returns eligible for electronic filing depend upon the electronic filing program used by the Taxation and Revenue Department and Internal Revenue Service websites contain information about the electronic filing options.

You may pay taxes over the internet with Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express cards. A convenience fee covers the costs that the companies bill the state when a credit card is used. There is no charge if you pay by electronic check. An electronic check authorizes the Department to debit a checking account in the amount and on the date specified.
