If you need more time because you live in an area hit by a natural disaster, you might qualify for tax relief from the IRS. The IRS often postpones the tax filing deadline for taxpayers who live in or have a business within a federally declared disaster area.

For example, the IRS announced it would postpone tax filing and tax payment deadlines for taxpayers affected by the September 2020 California wildfires.

How The Treasury Offset Program Works

Here’s how the Treasury Offset Program works:

  • The TOP will check if your name and taxpayer information are in its delinquent debtor database.
  • If there is a match, TOP will notify you that it is deducting the amount you owe from your tax refund.
  • TOP will send the outstanding amount to the government agency to which you owed the money.
  • If you owe more money than the payment you were going to receive, then TOP will send the entire amount to the other government agency. If you owe less, TOP will send the agency the amount you owed, and then send you the remaining balance.

Here’s an example: you were going to receive a $1,500 federal tax refund. But you are delinquent on a student loan and have $1,000 outstanding. TOP will deduct $1,000 from your tax refund and send it to the correct government agency. It will also send you a notice of its action, along with the remaining $500 that was due to you as a tax refund.

The Internal Revenue Service can help you understand more about tax refund offsets.

File Electronically And Choose Direct Deposit

To speed refunds, the IRS urges taxpayers to file electronically with direct deposit information as soon as they have everything they need to file an accurate return. If the return includes errors or is incomplete, it may require further review that may slow the tax refund. Having all information available when preparing the 2021 tax return can reduce errors and avoid delays in processing.

Most individual taxpayers file IRS Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR once they receive Forms W-2 and other earnings information from their employers, issuers like state agencies and payers. The IRS has incorporated recent changes to the tax laws into the forms and instructions and shared the updates with its partners who develop the software used by individuals and tax professionals to prepare and file their returns. Forms 1040 and 1040-SR and the associated instructions are available now on IRS.gov. For the latest IRS forms and instructions, visit the IRS website at IRS.gov/forms .

When Are Taxes Due If I File An Extension

8 Ways Taxes Differ in 2021

If you file Form 4868 and receive the automatic six-month extension, you will have until Oct. 15, 2022, to submit your 2021 tax return.

If you already know that youll need an extension, plan on filing Form 4868 sooner rather than later. That way, if anything goes wrong with your application, youll have plenty of time to fix any errors and resubmit it ahead of the April 15 tax deadline. This also ensures you have time to get your documents together for your extended deadline in October. The IRS website has all the forms, deadlines and information youll need.

  • IR-2022-08, January 10, 2022

WASHINGTON The Internal Revenue Service announced that the nationâs tax season will start on Monday, January 24, 2022, when the tax agency will begin accepting and processing 2021 tax year returns.

The January 24 start date for individual tax return filers allows the IRS time to perform programming and testing that is critical to ensuring IRS systems run smoothly. Updated programming helps ensure that eligible people can claim the proper amount of the Child Tax Credit after comparing their 2021 advance credits and claim any remaining stimulus money as a Recovery Rebate Credit when they file their 2021 tax return.

âPlanning for the nationâs filing season process is a massive undertaking, and IRS teams have been working non-stop these past several months to prepare,â said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. âThe pandemic continues to create challenges, but the IRS reminds people there are important steps they can take to help ensure their tax return and refund donât face processing delays. Filing electronically with direct deposit and avoiding a paper tax return is more important than ever this year. And we urge extra attention to those who received an Economic Impact Payment or an advance Child Tax Credit last year. People should make sure they report the correct amount on their tax return to avoid delays.â

Most Federal Tax Returns Are Due People Who Cant Pay Should Still File On Time

    IRS Tax Tip 2022-59, April 18, 2022

The filing and payment deadline for most 2021 federal tax returns has arrived. Taxpayers should file or request an extension of time to file and pay any taxes they owe by the April 18, 2022, deadline to avoid penalties and interest. Taxpayers in Maine and Massachusetts have until April 19, 2022, to pay to file their returns due to the Patriots’ Day holiday in those states.

Here are some tips for taxpayers who owe tax, but who can’t immediately pay their tax bill.

    Taxpayers should:

    • File their tax return or request an extension of time to file by the deadline.
    • People who owe tax and do not file their return on time or request an extension may face a failure-to-file penalty.
    • Taxpayers should remember that an extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay.
    • An extension gives taxpayers until October 17, 2022, to file their 2021 tax return, but taxes owed are still due the April deadline.
  • Pay as much as possible by the April due date.
  • Whether filing a return or requesting an extension, taxpayers must pay their tax bill in full by the April filing deadline to avoid penalties and interest.
  • People who do not pay their taxes on time will face a failure-to-pay penalty.
  • IRS.gov has information for taxpayers who can’t afford to pay taxes they owe.
  • Set up a payment plan as soon as possible.
  • Taxpayers who owe but cannot pay in full by the deadline don’t have to wait for a tax bill to request a payment plan.

Awaiting Processing Of Previous Tax Returns People Can Still File 2021 Returns

Rettig noted that IRS employees continue to work hard on critical areas affected by the pandemic, including processing of tax returns from last year and record levels of phone calls coming in.

“In many areas, we are unable to deliver the amount of service and enforcement that our taxpayers and tax system deserves and needs. This is frustrating for taxpayers, for IRS employees and for me,” Rettig said. “IRS employees want to do more, and we will continue in 2022 to do everything possible with the resources available to us. And we will continue to look for ways to improve. We want to deliver as much as possible while also protecting the health and safety of our employees and taxpayers. Additional resources are essential to helping our employees do more in 2022 and beyond.”

The IRS continues to reduce the inventory of prior-year individual tax returns that have not been fully processed. As of December 3, 2021, the IRS has processed nearly 169 million tax returns. All paper and electronic individual 2020 refund returns received prior to April 2021 have been processed if the return had no errors or did not require further review.

Taxpayers generally will not need to wait for their 2020 return to be fully processed to file their 2021 tax returns and can file when they are ready.

    When To Expect Your Refund

If you file your return electronically, the IRS says your refund should be issued in less than three weeks and faster when you choose direct deposit.

If you file a paper return, you can expect to wait between six and eight weeks to issue a refund.

Filing during the peak of tax season usually results in a longer wait time. So if you need your refund quickly, try to file as early as possible.

Contribute To Or Open An Ira By Tax Day

Tax Deadlines Due For 2021 Returns

Generally, federal taxes are due in the spring and extensions are due in the fall. But the specific dates depend on the type of tax return you file. And since Emancipation Day falls on April 15th and Patriots Day is on April 18th, Maine and Massachusetts residents have an extended due date until April 19, 2022 to file their individual 2021 income tax returns.

    Type of tax return

An extension to file doesnt extend the due date for taxes you owe. If youre granted an extension until October 17, any federal taxes you owe are still due on the filing deadline date.

When are quarterly estimated taxes due?

If youre self-employed or work as an independent contractor, youll need to make quarterly estimated payments. This is because payroll taxes arent withheld from your paycheck as they are in a W-2 job.

If youre expected to owe at least $1,000 in federal taxes and you fail to make quarterly estimated payments, youll incur penalties and interest charges. Heres a breakdown of when those payments are due:

How do I find out how much I owe in taxes?

Does The Irs Ever Negotiate The Amount Owed

Under certain circumstances, the IRS is authorized to resolve a tax liability by accepting less than full payment. An offer in compromise is an agreement between a taxpayer and the IRS that settles the taxpayers tax debt. There are three circumstances under which the IRS is authorized to compromise:

  • When there is doubt that the tax is correct.
  • When there is doubt that you could ever pay the tax in full.
  • When the tax is correct and you could pay it, but payment would result in an exceptional circumstance, economic hardship, or be unfair and inequitable.
  • Form 656: Offer in Compromise Package should be completed to file an Offer in Compromise with the IRS. Included with the Form 656 package are Form 433-A, Collection Information Statement for Wage Earners & Self-Employed Individuals and Form 433-B, Collection Information Statement for Businesses.

    • You may need to complete the appropriate Form 433 and should be prepared to provide other documentation and explanations as they are requested.
    • Various options are available for accepted Offers in Compromise requests, such as a reduced total payment and scheduled monthly payments.
    • Defaulting on an accepted offer in compromise can result in the IRS filing suit against you and reinstatement of the original tax debt, plus interest and penalties.

What If I Need More Time

Don’t let a looming tax deadline force you to rush through the tax filing process and make a mistake on your return. Simply request an extension.

The IRS typically grants a six-month extension of the tax filing deadline to anyone who requests it. You can request an extension electronically with TurboTax or use Form 4868.

Just keep in mind, the tax extension gives you more time to file your return, not more time to pay the tax you owe. You’ll need to estimate the amount you owe and make your payment by the tax filing deadline even if you file an extension.

The Advanced Child Tax Credit Is So Confusing How Should I Handle That On My Tax Return

Taxes are now due! Here’s how to file an extension for 2021

Good news: You are not imagining things. The child tax credit is causing headaches for both filers and tax pros alike.

There were a lot of temporary changes made to the child tax credit just for 2021. For starters, it was raised to $3,600 per child ages 5 and under, and to $3,000 per child ages 6 through 17.

It was also temporarily made fully refundable for 2021, meaning you can get the maximum amount of the credit even if it exceeds your federal income tax liability.

But heres where the real confusion comes in: The IRS likely has already sent you half the credit youre entitled to through monthly checks sent out between July and December.

You should have gotten a letter from the IRS in the past couple of months detailing what youve been paid already. Thats an amount you will need to report on your return. And then you will have to claim the other half of the credit youre owed, which you will get by way of a refund.
