The North Carolina Department of Revenue ruled that a taxpayers manufacture and sale of nutritional and dietary supplement products was subject to sales tax because each product at issue was a mixture or combination of two or more foods to be sold as a single product. Per State regulation, prepared food includes food that meets one of the following conditions: It is sold in a heated state or it is heated by the retailer It consists of two or more foods mixed or combined by the retailer for sale as a single item or It is sold with eating utensils provided by the retailer, such as plates, knives, forks, spoons, glasses, cups, napkins, and straws. See N.C. Gen. Stat. § 105-164.3 for further information.

PAY TAXES BY MONTHLY BANK DRAFT

Orange County Tax Office offers a Bank Draft Program that will allow you to pay 2023 real and personal property taxes over a 10-month period. This will relieve you of mailing monthly payments and is a convenient way to pay taxes.

  • You may choose to have payments drafted on either the 5th or the 20th of the month. Drafts on the 5th will begin in February and finish in November drafts on the 20th will begin in January and finish in October.
  • Submit your application by mail, in person or by email.
  • A new application must be completed each year to continue to participate in the bank draft program. Click here for the application .
  • Tax bills for registered motor vehicles are not eligible for this program.

North Carolina Update On Extension Of Filing Deadline

The North Carolina Department of Revenue has announced that it will extend the personal income tax filing and payment deadline from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021, to mirror the extension of the federal tax deadline. The Department will not charge penalties for those filing and paying their taxes after April 15, 2021, as long as they file and pay their tax on or before May 17, 2021. Unless state law is changed, tax payments received after April 15, 2021 will be charged interest, accruing from April 15, 2021 until the date of payment. The deadline extension only applies to personal income tax returns due April 15, 2021. The deadline extension does not apply to estimated tax payments or trust taxes such as sales and use taxes or withholding taxes due April 15, 2021.

Nc Is Finally Ready To Accept Your State Returns As The 2022 Tax Season Officially Opens

Tax returns are due this year on Friday, April 15.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – If youre one of the people who have been waiting to file your state taxes, North Carolina revenue leaders say they are finally ready to accept your returns.

The North Carolina Department of Revenue has officially opened the 2022 tax season and began accepting and downloading 2021 individual income tax returns.

Taxpayers who file state returns electronically will receive acknowledgments.

The delay in opening the tax season was due to the late approval of the state budget, which included multiple tax law changes.

Officials say the later start date provided the time necessary to complete the testing of system updates and approve updates in commercial tax preparation software.

Tax returns are due this year on Friday, April 15.

However, due to the Emancipation Day holiday, returns filed on or before April 18 will be considered filed on time and will not be subject to penalties or interest.

NCDOR will begin issuing refunds in April. Taxpayers can check the ncdor.gov website on the status of refund processing and updates.

Taxpayers are encouraged to file their taxes electronically officials say it is safer, more convenient, and more accurate than traditional paper filing.
