What Do These Irs Tax Refund Statuses Mean
Both IRS tools will show you one of three messages to explain your tax return status.
- Received: The IRS now has your tax return and is working to process it.
- Approved: The IRS has processed your return and confirmed the amount of your refund, if you’re owed one.
- Sent: Your refund is now on its way to your bank via direct deposit or as a paper check sent to your mailbox.
How Long Will I Have To Wait For My Federal Refund Check To Arrive
The IRS usually issues tax refunds within three weeks, but some taxpayers have been waiting months to receive their payments. If there are any errors, or if you filed a claim for an earned income tax credit or the child tax credit, the wait could be lengthy. If there is an issue holding up your return, the resolution “depends on how quickly and accurately you respond, and the ability of IRS staff trained and working under social distancing requirements to complete the processing of your return,” according to its website.
The date you get your tax refund also depends on how you filed your return. For example, with refunds going into your bank account via direct deposit, it could take an additional five days for your bank to post the money to your account. This means if it took the IRS the full 21 days to issue your check and your bank five days to post it, you could be waiting a total of 26 days to get your money. If you submitted a tax return by mail, the IRS says it could take six to eight weeks for your tax refund to arrive once it’s been processed.
Irs Takes On More Duties
This tax season is unlike any other.
The IRS has been handling rollouts for three stimulus programs since April 2020.
Now, the IRS is preparing to launch a way to send money each month to families who qualify for an expanded child tax credit. That effort is to begin in July.
In addition, the IRS is taking steps to automatically refund some tax money relating to jobless benefits money this spring and summer.
The follow-up refunds would apply to people who filed their tax return reporting unemployment compensation before the recent tax break for unemployment benefits was put into place as part of the American Rescue Plan.
The first special refund payouts will likely be made in May, and they will continue into the summer.
A tax rule change that excludes a portion of unemployment benefits from being included as income was signed into law March 11, roughly a month after the 2021 tax season began. Tax forms and tax software had to be updated after the season started to reflect the change.
Right now, the IRS said tax returns are opened in the order received.
“As the return is processed, it may be delayed because it has a mistake including errors concerning the Recovery Rebate Credit, is missing information, or there is suspected identity theft or fraud,” the IRS said.
“If we can fix it without contacting you, we will.
“If we need more information or need you to verify that it was you who sent the tax return, we will write you a letter.”

What Can Slow Down Your Refund
- Your return was selected for additional review. As refund fraud resulting from identify theft has become more widespread, were taking extra steps to review all individual income tax returns we receive to be sure refunds go to the rightful owners. Additional safeguards can mean that it takes us longer to process your refund. However, our goal is to stop fraudulent refunds before theyre issued, not to slow down your refund. - Missing information or documents. If we send you a letter requesting more information, please respond quickly so we can continue processing your return.
- Errors on your return. We found a math error in your return or have to make another adjustment. If the adjustment causes a different refund amount than you were expecting, we will send you a letter to explain the adjustment.
- Problems with direct deposit. If you requested direct deposit, but the account number was entered incorrectly, your bank won’t be able to process the deposit. When this happens, your bank notifies us, and we will manually re-issue your refund as a check. This process could take up to 2 weeks between the time we receive notification from the bank and when you receive the check.
Claiming A Vermont Refund
To claim a refund of Vermont withholding or estimated tax payments, you must file a Form IN-111, Vermont Income Tax Return. You have up to three years from the due date of the return, including extensions, to file a claim for overpayment of tax due.
If the information on your return does not match the information available to the Department, your refund may be delayed. The Department may be waiting for information from your employer or the IRS for data verification. If we need additional information from you before issuing your refund, we will contact you in writing with instructions on how to respond either online through myVTax or in writing.

If you chose direct deposit for your refund, you may see your refund a few days after your status has been updated to Weve released your refund. Your financial institution may have additional processing times. If you chose to receive your refund by check, then it may take a few weeks to receive your refund by mail.

Check Refund Status Online
You can check the status of your refund on Revenue Online. There is no need to login. Simply choose the option “Tax Refund for Individuals” in the box labeled “Where’s my Refund?”. Then, enter your SSN or ITIN and the refund amount you claimed on your current year income tax return. If you do not know the refund amount you claimed, you may either use a Letter ID number from a recent income tax correspondence from the Department.
You will receive the Letter ID within 7-10 business days. After we have received and processed your return, we will provide you with an updated status as the refund moves through our system. It may take a few days for an updated status to appear. Please check back often to verify where your return/refund may be in our process.
The information in Revenue Online is the same information available to our Call Center representatives. You can get the information without waiting on hold.
Why Would Your Refund Come By Snail Mail
There are a couple of reasons that your refund would be mailed to you. Your money can only be electronically deposited into a bank account with your name, your spouse’s name or a joint account. If that’s not the reason, you may be getting multiple refund checks, and the IRS can only direct-deposit up to three refunds to one account. Additional refunds must be mailed. Also, your bank may reject the deposit and this would be the IRS’ next best way to refund your money quickly.
It’s also important to note that for refunds, direct deposit isn’t always automatic. Some are noticing that like the stimulus checks, the first two payments for the child tax credit were mailed. Just in case, parents should sign in to the IRS portal to check that the agency has their correct banking information. If not, parents can add it for the next payment in September.

If I Call The Irs Will I Get My Refund Faster
From what Ive read, no, it will not speed up the process. Also, I imagine this would be as much fun as calling about a lost passport or contacting the DMV.
According to the IRS website, they are unable to review the status of your refund until it is at least 21 days after you filed online.
If you filed with mail-in tax forms, they cant access your refund until six weeks later.
How Should I Contact The Irs For More Help
The IRS received 167 million calls this tax season, which is four times the number of calls in 2019. And based on the recent report, only 7 percent of calls reached a telephone agent for help. While you could try calling the IRS to check your status, the agency’s live phone assistance is extremely limited right now because the IRS says it’s working hard to get through the backlog. You shouldn’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.
The IRS is directing people to the Let Us Help You page on its website for more information. It also advises taxpayers to get in-person help at Taxpayer Assistance Centers. You can contact your local IRS office or call to make an appointment: 844-545-5640. You can also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you’re eligible for assistance by calling them: 877-777-4778.
Though the chances of getting live assistance are slim, the IRS says you should only call the agency directly if it’s been 21 days or more since you filed your taxes online, or if the Where’s My Refund tool tells you to contact the IRS. I Received An Irs ‘math Error’ Notice What Is It
Millions of Americans have received confusing “math-error notices” from the IRS this year — letters saying they owe more taxes. Once they get the notice, they have a 60-day window to respond before it goes to the agency’s collection unit.
From the start of the year to August, the IRS sent more than 11 million of these notices. According to the Taxpayer Advocate Service, “Many math error notices are vague and do not adequately explain the urgency the situation demands.” Additionally, sometimes the notices “don’t even specify the exact error that was corrected, but rather provide a series of possible errors that may have been addressed by the IRS.”
The majority of the errors this year are related to stimulus payments, according to the Wall Street Journal. They could also be related to a tax adjustment for a variety of issues detected by the IRS during processing. They can result in tax due, or a change in the amount of the refund — either more or less. Irs Issued 430000 More Unemployment Tax Refunds What To Know
After waiting three months, thousands of taxpayers finally received the money they were owed for the unemployment tax break.
The IRS has sent 8.7 million unemployment compensation refunds so far.
After more than three months since the IRS last sent adjustments on 2020 tax returns, the agency finally issued 430,000 refunds on Monday to those who qualify for the unemployment tax break. In total, over 11.7 million refunds have been issued, totaling $14.4 billion. The IRS says it plans to issue another batch by the end of the year.
Here’s a summary of what those refunds are about: The first $10,200 of 2020 jobless benefits was made nontaxable income by the American Rescue Plan in March, so taxpayers who filed their returns before the legislation and paid taxes on those benefits are due money back.

Processing Errors Can Delay Receiving A Refund
Another reason you may still be waiting on your tax refund is if an IRS screening filter detects a potential reporting error. While each return passes through various automated filters, returns claiming a refund go through an extra layer of scrutiny.
The IRS uses screening filters to prevent tax fraud and find filing mistakes. Common reasons why your return may not receive immediate acceptance include:
- Mismatching Social Security Numbers
- Duplicate entries for pension or retirement plan distributions
- Wage verification for the Child Tax Credit or Earned Income Tax Credit claims
These filters first affected taxpayers who filed their return before the March closures and the IRS began sending notifications about filing errors. Some taxpayers received their notices but didnt have time to make corrections before the IRS processing centers closed.
If 2020 were a normal year, the filer could correct those errors and receive their refund in a few short weeks. The 2021 Objectives Reports from the Taxpayer Advocate finds that numerous reports were mistakenly flagged by the processing filtersa false positive. The IRS is now starting to resolve these errors and sending the correct refund amount plus interest from April 15th.

How Can You Use The Where’s My Refund Tool
To check the status of your 2020 income tax refund using the IRS tracker tools, you’ll need to give some information: your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, filing status — single, married or head of household — and your refund amount in whole dollars . Also, make sure it’s been at least 24 hours before you start tracking your refund.
Using the IRS tool Where’s My Refund, go to the Get Refund Status page, enter your SSN or ITIN, filing status and exact refund amount, then press Submit. If you entered your information correctly, you’ll be taken to a page that shows your refund status. If not, you may be asked to verify your personal tax data and try again. If all the information looks correct, you’ll need to enter the date you filed your taxes, along with whether you filed electronically or on paper.
The IRS also has a mobile app called IRS2Go that checks your tax refund status — it’s available in English and Spanish. You’ll be able to see if your return has been received, approved and sent. In order to log in, you’ll need some information — your Social Security number, filing status and expected refund amount. The IRS updates the data in this tool overnight, so if you don’t see a status change after 24 hours or more, check back the following day. Once your return and refund are approved, you’ll receive a personalized date by which to expect your money.

Why Is There Still An Irs Backlog
Because of the pandemic, the IRS ran at restricted capacity in 2020, which put a strain on its ability to process tax returns and created a backlog. The combination of the shutdown, three rounds of stimulus payments, challenges with paper-filed returns and the tasks related to implementing new tax laws and credits created a “perfect storm,” according to a National Taxpayer Advocate review of the 2021 filing season to Congress.
The IRS is open again and currently processing mail, tax returns, payments, refunds and correspondence, but limited resources continue to cause delays. The IRS said it’s also taking more time for 2020 tax returns that need review, such as determining recovery rebate credit amounts for the first and second stimulus checks — or figuring out earned income tax credit and additional child tax credit amounts.
Here’s a list of reasons your income tax refund might be delayed:

- It’s incomplete.
- Your refund is suspected of identity theft or fraud.
