How Do I Get The 2021 Child Tax Credit And Get Advance Payments

You dont need to do anything to get the advance payments if you:

  • Filed a tax return for tax year 2019 or 2020. Your tax return is used to determine eligibility for advance payments even if you didnt claim the CTC on your tax return.
  • Successfully submitted your information using the 2020 IRS Non-Filers tool .

The IRS started sending notices about eligibility for the advance CTC payments in June. The IRS will automatically send your monthly advance payments for each qualifying child from July 15, 2021 to December 15, 2021.

If you dont fall into the above categories, you have two options to get the advance payments:

  • If you arent normally required to file taxes, you can use the new IRS Non-filer Portal to submit a simplified tax return. Youll be able to enter your information, including the number and ages of your qualifying children to receive advance payments this year.
Filing Status
Qualifying Widow with Dependent Child $24,800 $26,100
  • If youre required to file taxes, you need to file a 2020 tax return to receive advance payments of the new credit this year.

If you earned any income, we recommend filing taxes whether or not you have a filing requirement, as you may be eligible for other valuable tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, which can give you more money back in your tax refund.

The new CTC is for your 2021 tax return . The advance payments will give you half of your CTC amount in 2021. You will have to file a tax return in 2022 to get the rest.

What Happens If You Miss The Tax Deadline In Canada

Missing a deadline is never a good thing but missing your tax deadline is possibly the worst deadline to miss. In addition to the extra stress you face from racing the clock, filing your taxes late comes with costly expenses.

Late Tax Filing Penalty

If you miss your tax deadline, then Revenue Canada will charge you five percent of any amount owing. Every subsequent month, an additional one percent is added to the total. For those who are late filing for previous years, the penalty increases to ten percent upfront and an additional two percent every month. The maximum penalty period is 20 months.

Example: If you owe $2,000 on your income tax bill and you file two months late, you will get a late penalty of $100 . If you pay the full amount within the month, you will owe $2,100.

Were you to pay three months late, the added penalty would increase. One percent of $2,000 is $20. It gets added to the total every month, raising the amount to $2,160.

How to avoid tax refund delays for your 2021 return

Although the Where’s My Refund tool typically shows a status of Received, Approved or Sent, there are a variety of other messages some users may see.

One of the most common is Tax Topic 152, indicating you’re likely getting a refund but it hasn’t been approved or sent yet. The notice simply links out to an informational topic page on the IRS FAQ website explaining the types and timing of tax refunds.

The delay could be an automated message for taxpayers claiming the child tax credit or earned income tax credit sent because of additional fraud protection steps.

Tax Topic 151 means your tax return is now under review by the IRS. The agency either needs to verify certain credits or dependents, or it has determined that your tax refund will be reduced to pay money that it believes you owe. You’ll need to wait about four weeks to receive a notice from the IRS explaining what you need to do to resolve the status.

There are other IRS refund codes that a small percentage of tax filers receive, indicating freezes, math errors on tax returns or undelivered checks. The College Investor offers a list of IRS refund reference codes and errors and their meaning.

We are processing returns received over the summer and fall in 2020 due to the extended July 15, 2020, tax filing due date, the IRS said.

IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig, who spoke before the Senate Finance Committee on April 13, said the 2021 tax filing season continues to go smoothly.

Not everyone agrees.

Its a big mess, said Antonio Brown, a CPA in Flint, Michigan.

As of mid-April, Brown said he had about 15 clients who continued to wait for their refunds.

Theyve been contacting me almost weekly, Brown said. And every time I check the IRS website, it says that the refund is being processed and the refund date has yet to be determined.

Theyre the very ones that need the refunds to help through these tough times, Brown said.
