Your Agi: What It Is And How It Affects Your Stimulus Check Tax Refund And Child Tax Credit

Wheres My Refund?

Your adjusted gross income is an amount calculated from your total income, and the IRS uses it to determine how much the government can tax you. Gross income is the sum of all the money you earn in a year including wages, dividends, alimony, capital gains, interest income, royalties, rental income and retirement distributions.

After you subtract allowable deductions from your gross income , the result is your AGI, or taxable income, which is used to calculate your income tax. Your AGI is reported on IRS Form 1040, and you can find it on Line 11 of this years version .

Since its a rough estimate of how much money youre bringing in after deductions from all your streams of income, the IRS uses your AGI to calculate how much you get in a stimulus check, the amount of your tax refund , and your upcoming 2021 child tax credit .

For tax credits, as your AGI goes up, the amount you can get generally decreases. Heres and example: The third check is more targeted than the first two rounds. Single taxpayers with an AGI over $80,000 will not be eligible for any stimulus money, down from a $99,000 cutoff for the first check, and $87,000 for the second check.

How To Check On Your State Tax Refund

Any state tax refund you have coming can come at a variety of times, depending on what state you filed in. Most of the time, state returns are processed faster than federal returns. Each state uses a slightly different system to let taxpayers check their tax refund status. In general though, there are two pieces of information that you will need in order to check on your refund.

The first important information is your Social Security number . If you do not have a SSN, most states allow you to use a few different types of ID. One common type is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number . If you file a joint return, use whichever ID number appears first on the return.

Almost all states will also require you to provide the amount of your refund. Most states ask you to round your return to the nearest whole number but some states, like Vermont, will ask for the exact amount of your refund.

These two things will be enough for you to check in some states. Other states may also require your date of birth, the year of the return, your filing status or your zip code. Below is a run down of how you can check your refund status in each state that collects an income tax.

Note that Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming have no state income tax. New Hampshire and Tennessee do not tax regular wages and income. Tennessee has phased out tax on income from dividends and investments and New Hampshire has proposed legislation to do the same.

Where Is My California Inflation Relief Check

Inflation relief checks disbursement begins Friday

Millions of eligible Californians will start receiving inflation relief payments in the form of debit cards or direct deposits beginning Oct. 7.

LOS ANGELES – As many as 23 million Californians are eligible to receive inflation relief payments of up to $1,050, with the first batch of payments disbursed last Friday.

If you didn’t get your Middle Class Tax Refund via direct deposit, you may be wondering what the deal is and when you’ll get paid.

According to the Franchise Tax Board, while direct payments began disbursement on Oct. 7, more will continue to be sent out through Oct. 25, with the remaining direct deposits arriving between Oct. 28 and Nov. 14.

The FTB said about 90% of the direct deposits are expected to be issued in the month of October.

Also, officials said not to forget that direct deposits likely don’t get posted to accounts until 3-5 business days from the issue date and that varies by bank.

SUGGESTED:

If you’re not in the direct deposit family and instead are awaiting a debit card, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. Debit cards will start getting mailed out between Oct. 21 and Dec. 10, according to the FTB. That also doesn’t factor in the extra delay that comes with snail mail containing the debit card actually arriving in your mailbox.
