Update On The Irs Backlog

Sending Multiple Tax Returns Together – To The IRS and States

The penalty relief comes amid a major backlog of tax returns that the IRS is struggling to work through.

The agency said it had 7.2 million unprocessed individual tax returns this year as of Sept. 9, which includes documents for the 2021 tax year as well as prior year returns. Roughly 1.6 million returns need error correction or other special handling, and 5.6 million are paper returns that still need to be processed.

Lawmakers have repeatedly probed IRS officials as to the status of the backlog, which the agency hopes to have addressed by the end of this year, as National Taxpayer Advocate Erin M. Collins said in her mid-year report to Congress.

The IRS has said it is aiming to crush the backlogged inventory this year, and I hope it succeeds, Collins wrote. Unfortunately, at this point the backlog is still crushing the IRS, its employees, and most importantly, taxpayers.

Filing Paper Returns Or Payments By Mail

If you do not prefer to e-file, you have the option to file your return using a paper form and related schedules. Most forms are available as fillable PDFs, allowing you to type in the information. Typed characters make processing go more smoothly because the forms can be read more accurately by the Departments scanners.

When you are ready to print the form, be sure to follow the printing instructions carefully to ensure our scanners can read and process your form. Printing the form in a different format slows processing.

You may receive a surprise in the mail from the IRS this month but dont worry, its a good one.

The federal agency is sending out $1.2 billion in collective refunds or credits to roughly 1.6 million taxpayers who got hit with fees for filing their 2019 or 2020 federal income tax returns late. The majority of eligible Americans are set to receive those refunds by the end of September.

If you are a Maryland resident, you can file long Form 502 and 502B if your federal adjusted gross income is less than $100,000.

If you lived in Maryland only part of the year, you must file Form 502.

    Special situations

If you are self-employed or do not have Maryland income taxes withheld by an employer, you can make quarterly estimated tax payments as part of a pay-as-you-go plan, using Form PV. Please refer to Payment Voucher Worksheet for estimated tax and extension payments instructions.

If you owe additional Maryland tax and are seeking an automatic six-month filing extension, you must file Form PV along with your payment by April 15, 2020. You should file Form PV only if you are making a payment with your extension request.

If you need to make certain changes to your original Maryland return that has already been filed and processed, you must file Form 502X for 2019 to amend your original tax return.
