Stimulus Checks 202: How To Get Irs Tax Fourth Stimulus Checks
When the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, states put in place a series of lockdown restrictions to slow the spread.
This increased the rate of unemployment prompting the federal government to pass a series of relief bills, including the Economic Impact Payment better known as a coronavirus stimulus check.
Lets take a look at what people got paid and how you can claim your payment if you havent.
Before I start

Unclaimed Federal Tax Refunds
If you are eligible for a federal tax refund and dont file a return, then your refund will go unclaimed. Even if you aren’t required to file a return, it might benefit you to file if:
- Federal taxes were withheld from your pay
and/or
- You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit
You may not have filed a tax return because your wages were below the filing requirement. But you can still file a return within three years of the filing deadline to get your refund.
What To Do If You Havent Been Paid Your Stimulus Check In 2023
If you havent been paid your stimulus check, there are steps you can take to claim your money.
First, you have to be eligible. You have to be:
- a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien
- Not a dependent of another taxpayer.
- Earning not more than $150,000 if you are married and filing a joint return, $112,500 if a head of household, or $75,000 as a single filer.
Stimulus check 1 and 2
If you did not receive your first or second stimulus check, you can file a 2020 tax return because thats the only way you will be able to claim unpaid funds from your first and second stimulus check through the Recovery Rebate Credit.
This credit is for those who did not receive any stimulus money at all or received the incorrect amount. You can claim a partial credit and get any additional funds.
You can claim your payment by filing your tax return because the stimulus checks were an advance on a tax credit. Since the IRS is no longer sending out these advances, the only way to claim unpaid stimulus money is to file a tax return.

Third Stimulus Check
The third round of Economic Impact Payments was enforced by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The IRS started sending the checks in March 2021.
As of writing this, the IRS has issued all third Economic Impact Payments and related plus-up payments and most eligible people already received the payments.

Why Would My Tax Refund Come In The Mail Instead Of Direct Deposit
There are a couple of reasons that your refund would be mailed to you. Your money can only be electronically deposited into a bank account with your name, your spouses name or a joint account. If thats not the reason, you may be getting multiple refund checks, and the IRS can only direct deposit up to three refunds to one account. Additional refunds must be mailed. Also, your bank may reject the deposit and this would be the IRS next best way to refund your money quickly.
Its also important to note that for refunds, direct deposit isnt always automatic. Just in case, sign in to your IRS account to check that the agency has your correct banking information.

What Does The Stimulus Check Portal Do
The updated Get My Payment tool lets you:
- Check the status of your stimulus payment
- Confirm your payment type and
- Get a projected direct deposit or paper check delivery date .
For first-round stimulus payments, you could also use the portal to enter or change your bank account information to have your payment directly deposited into your account. However, that feature isnt included in the current tool . The IRS already has bank account information for millions of Americans from recent tax returns, tax payments, the original Get My Payment tool, the non-filers tool used last year, other federal agencies that regularly send out benefit payments , and federal records of recent payments to or from the government. So, the tax agency is generally limiting direct deposit payments to bank accounts that they already have on file. As a result, you cant change your bank information using the Get My Payment tool.
If your payment isnt deposited directly into your bank account, then youll get either a paper check or a debit card in the mail . You could also receive a payment by mail if your bank rejected a direct deposit. This could happen because the bank information was incorrect or the bank account on file with the IRS has since been closed.

Can I Track My California Inflation Relief Check
The short answer: no. But you can probably narrow down your timeline a bit.
If you filed your taxes online and also received the Golden State Stimulus you may have already gotten your relief. If you dont meet both of those criteria, youre going to have to wait longer.
Remember, debit cards are being dispersed based off order of last names, so if youve been blessed with an A-B-C name, you wont have to wait as long as the X-Y-Z crowd.
And if youve changed your banking info since your 2020 return was filed youre in for a long wait. That group will be the last to get their payment.

The state hopes to have everyones payments sent out by mid-January.

How To Check On Your State Tax Refund
Any state tax refund you have coming can come at a variety of times, depending on what state you filed in. Most of the time, state returns are processed faster than federal returns. Each state uses a slightly different system to let taxpayers check their tax refund status. In general though, there are two pieces of information that you will need in order to check on your refund.
The first important information is your Social Security number . If you do not have a SSN, most states allow you to use a few different types of ID. One common type is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number . If you file a joint return, use whichever ID number appears first on the return.
Almost all states will also require you to provide the amount of your refund. Most states ask you to round your return to the nearest whole number but some states, like Vermont, will ask for the exact amount of your refund.
These two things will be enough for you to check in some states. Other states may also require your date of birth, the year of the return, your filing status or your zip code. Below is a run down of how you can check your refund status in each state that collects an income tax.
Note that Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming have no state income tax. New Hampshire and Tennessee do not tax regular wages and income. Tennessee has phased out tax on income from dividends and investments and New Hampshire has proposed legislation to do the same.

Who Is Eligible For A Stimulus Check
Stimulus checks are available to eligible U.S. individuals with Social Security numbers. However, the amount you get depends on several factors.
For the first two stimulus checks, if you were a dependent, you werent eligible for your own check. People who claimed dependents under 17 could receive a payment for them. Dependents cannot claim their own checks in the third stimulus package. However, if you claim dependents, you can now receive a payment for adult dependents as well as for dependents over age 17.
There are income limits for the stimulus checks. These direct payments are available in full to:
- Single tax filers with an income under $75,00.
- Heads of house with an income under $112,500
There are phase-out rules which dictate when high earners lose eligibility for checks. There were different phase-out rules for the three stimulus packages.
The IRS used tax return information from 2018 or 2019 to calculate income and eligibility for the first two checks. It then used tax return information from 2019 or 2020 to determine income and eligibility for the third stimulus check.
The IRS also used information from the Social Security Administration and VA to send payments to benefits recipients who dont file tax returns. It also created an online form for non-filers to claim their payments.

How New Jersey Processes Income Tax Refunds
Beginning in January, we process Individual Income Tax returns daily. Processing includes:
Generally, we process returns filed using computer software faster than returns filed by paper. Electronic returns typically take a minimum of 4 weeks to process.
Processing of paper tax returns typically takes a minimum of 12 weeks.
We process most returns through our automated system. However, staff members do look at some returns manually to see whether the taxpayer filed income, deductions, and credits correctly.
In some cases, they will send a filer a letter asking for more information. In such cases, we cannot send a refund until the filer responds with the requested information.
Returns that require manual processing may take longer regardless of whether the return was filed electronically or by paper.
To mitigate the spread of COVID-19, staffing is extremely limited and may delay the timeframe to review refund requests.
Please allow additional time for processing and review of refunds.

How Taxpayers Can Check The Status Of Their Federal Tax Refund
IRS Tax Tip 2022-60, April 19, 2022
Once a taxpayer files their tax return, they want to know when theyll receive their refund. The most convenient way to check on a tax refund is by using the Wheres My Refund? tool on IRS.gov. Taxpayers can start checking their refund status within 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt of the taxpayers e-filed return. The tool also provides a personalized refund date after the return is processed and a refund is approved.
Taxpayers can access the Wheres My Refund? tool two ways:
- Visiting IRS.gov
To use the tool, taxpayers will need:
- Their Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification number
- Tax filing status
- The exact amount of the refund claimed on their tax return
The tool shows progress in three phases:
- Return received
- Refund approved
When the status changes to approved, this means the IRS is preparing to send the refund as a direct deposit to the taxpayers bank account or directly to the taxpayer in the mail, by check, to the address used on their tax return.
The IRS updates the Wheres My Refund? tool once a day, usually overnight, so taxpayers dont need to check the status more often.
Taxpayers allow time for their bank of credit union to post the refund to their account or for it to be delivered by mail. Calling the IRS wont speed up a tax refund. The information available on Wheres My Refund? is the same information available to IRS telephone assistors.
