Be Ready To Verify Your Right To Call

The IRS takes steps to help protect taxpayers from identity theft. When you call, an IRS agent will need to verify your identity before talking to you about your specific issue. Having your tax return from the previous year can help with that.

And if youre a tax professional or an individual calling about someone elses issue, the IRS will need to confirm you have the right to act on that other persons behalf. If youre acting as someone elses legally designated representative, the IRS will need written or verbal confirmation from that person, and probably some paperwork such as a Tax Information Authorization form and a power of attorney.

If You Really Want To Call The Irs

If you do call the IRS, be sure you have a concrete question for phone reps. To prevent tax fraud, the agency wants you to verify your identity. So have on hand your Social Security number, or a letter showing your Individual Taxpayer Identification Number if you dont have a Social Security number your filing status and your 2017 tax return.

If youre calling about concerns related to a prior-year return, youll need to have the Social Security numbers and birth dates for those who were named on the tax return in question, a copy of that tax return, and any IRS letters or notices youve received.

And make sure you actually need to call, Smith says. A lot can be handled other ways. You can call as early as 7 a.m., and early morning can often be less busy, Smith says.

Alternatively, look for answers through the IRS website and other resources.

Irs Phone Number For Child Tax Credit: Details To Know

If you have an issue with your child tax credit payment, there are a few ways to contact the IRS for help.

The IRS can help with your child tax credit payment issues.

Four out of the six child tax credit payments have gone out to millions of families so far, each with its own hiccups. If you’re one of the many people experiencing issues — maybe one of your paper checks hasn’t arrived — you’re probably searching for answers to find out what’s going on or to know the status of your check. And if you’re using the IRS Update Portal but still having trouble, it may be time to contact the IRS.

Before calling the IRS, be aware that the agency is juggling stimulus checks, processing federal tax refunds and other delayed payments right now. You may face long call waiting times and there are limits on how much the agency may be able to help you — although it may be your only option if you’ve exhausted all other resources. You may be able to answer some of your questions by first making sure that you’re actually eligible for the payments. Did you file your taxes? Is your information updated in the IRS portals? These factors all impact your monthly payments.

If you’ve gone through all your options and still haven’t found a solution, we’ll tell you how to contact the IRS and potentially make an appointment. Also, here’s how to check the amount of money you should be getting and why you may want to opt out of the child tax credit checks altogether.
