How Much Can You Get

In a nutshell, qualified home and business owners can receive a total of 10% of their total purchase and installation costs up to a maximum of $300 on air conditioners. However, if youve also installed a qualifying furnace at the same time, you can receive another 10% of up to $150 for this. Finally, if the heating system came with a main circulating air fan, you can claim 10% up to $50 for this installation, but you can only do so if the energy usage of the fan comprises less than 2% of the cost of running the furnace.

What If You Upgraded Your Hvac In 2020

If you upgraded your HVAC system within the last few years, then you may be thinking that youve missed out on a good incentive. The good news is that this isnt true.

This tax incentive has been running since the 2017 tax cycle and will be running through the end of the 2021 tax cycle. This legislation also allows anyone who didnt know about it when they purchased to claim this credit retroactively. In other words, as long as you upgraded your HVAC system as recently as 2017, then you can still claim the tax credit on your 2021 taxes.

You still have time to claim your tax credit if you upgraded your system in 2020. Youll receive the same benefits as someone upgrading their system this year if you do.

So theres no need to feel frustrated for not claiming that money sooner. You can still get compensated for ten percent of your new systems cost.

But you should double-check that your system qualifies before you get too excited. Not every new HVAC system will be covered after all. Check the AHRIs website to see if your system qualifies so that you can get your tax credit this year.

Who Is Eligible For This Program & How To Apply

What’s a Seer Rating? – Buying a New Air Conditioner

The qualifications are fairly straightforward. In the easiest terms, you must be the homeowner and live in the home . The home must also be preexisting.

This means that rental properties and new construction do not qualify for the tax credit. The system must also have been purchased between 2017 and 2021 and installed within 90 days of purchase.

Note that if the legislation does pass to extend the dates to 2026, the date-specific qualifications may change.

If you have a qualifying unit and pay annual income taxes, you must file for your tax credit. A single form must be filled out and submitted with your tax return. Instructions for filling out the form can be found here.

Note that this is a tax credit, and not a tax deduction. A deduction lowers the amount of taxable income. For example, if you have an income of $35,000 and a tax deduction of $500, your total taxable income becomes $34,500.

A tax credit lowers the amount of taxes you have to pay. For example, if you are required to pay $1000 in taxes and have a tax credit of $300, you then only owe $700. If you get a refund instead of owing, you can still qualify for the tax credit as long as the amount of taxes you have paid throughout the year is higher than the credit you are claiming.

If you do not pay taxes, you cannot claim the tax credit.

You must also have the Manufacturers Certification Statement on hand. You are not required to submit this certificate .
