Track Your Carryforwards Carefully
If you cannot deduct all of your charitable donations in a year because you have hit the maximum percentage of taxable income, you can carry them forward for up to five years, after which time, they expire and you can no longer use them. If you have tax carryforwards, track them carefully so that you use them up before expiration, if possible. If it appears that you are at risk of losing a balance carryforward, hold back on current year’s donations and make sure you use up the older ones first.
Gifts Of Less Than $250
To deduct a noncash donation worth less than $250, you need a receipt with:
- the charitable organization’s name
- the date and location of the contribution, and
- a description of the property .
If you’re giving securities, you should also document the name of the issues, the type of security, and whether or not it is publicly traded.
Clothing and Household Items. Most of us, from time to time, pass on clothing, furniture, appliances, and similar household items to charities, hoping others can use them. Keeping Records Of Your Donation
Your written records must indicate the name of the charitable organization, the date of your contribution, and the amount that you gave. Canceled checks work well because the name of the charity, the date, and the amount of the gift all appear there. Bank statements are good, too, when they show a gift paid by debit card, and credit card statements work when they show this same information.
Charitable organizations will often provide donors with written letters of acknowledgment or receipts. The IRS can disallow charitable donations of $250 or more if you don’t have a written acknowledgment from the charity to document your gift, in addition to your other records.

Enhanced tax deduction: The enhanced tax deduction provides an extra incentive for donation by allowing the donating business to deduct the lesser of twice the basis value of the donated food or the basis value of the donated food plus one-half of the foods expected profit margin . Under the enhanced deduction, all businesses may deduct up to 15% of their taxable income for food donations.
Example: A grocery store donates potatoes with a fair market value of $100. The basis value of these potatoes was $30. The expected profit margin is the fair market value minus the basis value , which is $70. Under the enhanced deduction, the grocery store is eligible to deduct the smaller of:
1. Basis Value x 2 = $30 x 2 =$60or
2. Basis Value + = $30 + = $65

Cash Donations Of $250 Or More
You can claim these if the organization gives you a written acknowledgement of the donation. The acknowledgement must include all of these:
- Amount of cash contributed
- Statement showing if the organization gave you goods or services for your donation. This doesnt include token items or membership.
- Description and good faith estimate of the value of goods and services you received
You must receive this acknowledgement by the earlier of the:
- Date you file your return for the year you made the donation
- Due date, including extensions, for filing your return

In order for your donation to be deductible, it must go to a nonprofit group that is approved by the IRS. Most often, these are charitable, religious or educational organizations, though they can also be everything from your local volunteer fire company to a group for the prevention of cruelty to animals.
