How To Dispose Of Tax Returns

No matter what tax bracket you are in or what you do for a living, it is important to store your tax returns properly. The IRS has the right to go back three years or more to examine your tax records, and it is important that you have that information on hand if it is needed. But when those tax records are no longer needed, it is just as important to dispose of them properly. Improper disposal of your tax returns could leave you open to identity theft, so it is crucial to shred those personal documents.

Scan your tax returns to an electronic format if you need to preserve them. If you use a tax preparation software package, you will be able to save your tax returns as PDF documents before printing them. If you do your taxes on paper or pay a tax preparer, you can use a scanner to preserve those documents on your computer.

Save your old tax returns on an external hard drive or thumb drive. If you prefer you can also upload your old tax returns to an external backup service. Just make sure that the service you choose provides strong encryption for these highly personal documents.

Gather your old tax returns, as well as the supporting documentation that goes with them. Use a personal shredder to shred the returns before putting them out with the trash.

Masking Of Personal Information On Transcripts

The IRS is fighting a war against identity theft and tax fraud. Thieves attempt to gain access to IRS transcript data to file fraudulent tax returns or engage in other crimes. To help prevent this, transcripts only display partial personal information, such as the last four digits of your social security number. Full financial and tax information, such as wages and taxable income, is shown on the transcript. You can see a sample of a redacted transcript on the IRS website.

You may request an unmasked transcript for tax preparation. The IRS mails unmasked transcripts to your address in its records. Tax professionals can also obtain copies of their clients’ unmasked transcripts.

Why Should You Keep Some Tax Records Longer Than Seven Years

As a money nerd, I am planning to keep my older tax records indefinitely. Partially, because I think it is a good idea to have them.;Also, because Ive managed to make all the files digital, and once they are scanned and saved, I have more important things to do with my time rather than delete old files on my computer. Also, as a business owner, I have found it interesting to revisit my income and even business expenses throughout my career as a financial planner.

Do You Have Tax Records Connected to Property?

When you own property , you should keep all tax records for at least three years after selling that property and filing the corresponding tax returns. That may include records for depreciation, amortization, or depletion deduction, all of which will figure into whether you are going to realize a gain or loss when you sell the property.;Your taxable gain when selling a home, or disposing of property, is not necessarily the same as the difference between the purchase and sale prices.

Depending on where you live, you may need to keep state tax records longer than the IRS requires for … federal tax returns.

    Requesting Tax Transcript By Mail

To order by postal mail, you can use the Get Transcript by Mail tool on the IRS website. Alternatively, you can complete and send in IRS Form 4506-T or Form 4506T-EZ. You can usually use the shorter Form 4506T-EZ to obtain a tax return transcript. Therefore, use Form 4506-T to request a tax account transcript.

You are not required to register with the IRS when you order by mail. On the form, provide your social security number and mailing address from your latest tax return. You can also designate a third party to receive the transcript.

A new optional Customer File Number field is also available to use when requesting a transcript. You have the option of inputting a number, such as a loan number, in this field. This is something your lender will provide you. If you’re applying for a home loan, typically the lender will have you complete Form 4506T and send it in for you.

The IRS mails the transcript to the address it has on file for you, or to your lender or other third-party you designate. The IRS says it takes five to ten calendar days to receive the transcript.

How Often The Irs Changes Its Tax Forms

The IRS has to update many of its forms annually. Even if the forms content doesnt change, the form needs to state the current year so that taxpayers can be confident theyre filing the correct paperwork and calculating the right amount of tax due. The IRS updates its forms because of new laws or guidance, new addresses or phone numbers, or the need to make a correction or clarification.

A big reason for tax form changes is new legislation, such as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. This legislation required the IRS to create new 1040 forms and new schedules. , standard deductions, itemized deductions, and more changed under the new law. Another major piece of legislation, the Affordable Care Act, necessitated changes to tax forms because of the subsidies, penalties, and new taxes the law mandated.

Tax Return Transcripts: How To Get Your Old Tax Returns From The Internal Revenue Service

The IRS recommends that you keep tax records for at least three years from the date you filed your original return, and longer for special situations. You may need copies of your tax returns for tasks like filing future years’ taxes, applying for a mortgage loan or student aid, or settling IRS inquiries.

How to Get Your Past Tax Returns

If you cannot find your old tax returns and need to order a tax return transcript from the IRS, you have several options. For the really old-school methods, you can call the IRS at 800-908-9946 and follow the prompts, or fill out IRS Form 4506-T or Form 4506T-EZ for an individual transcript and mail it to the address noted on the form. The IRS suggests that you submit mail requests thirty calendar days in advance of the need to make sure you don’t miss the filing deadline. “Let’s say you owe money and you don’t file on time, then you potentially have late filing penalties and underpayment penalties,” warns Betterment Head of Tax Eric Bronnenkant. “The laws are designed to incentivize you to pay on time … and obviously the longer that you wait, the more of a thorn that it can be at your side.”

The Get Transcript site is also the quickest way to get transcripts ordered by mail. You still need to leave five to ten days from the date the request is filed through the site.

How To File Back Tax Returns | TCC

In the tax year 2018, the government changed Form 1040 and the supplemental forms many taxpayers file along with it. Instead of forms 1040, 1040-A, and 1040-EZ, theres Form 1040 for most filers, plus a different form you can choose to file if you’re a senior: Form 1040-SR.

Taxpayers who take the standard deduction and have simple returns dont need to file any other forms.

The IRS provides a fillable PDF of Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR online. You can type in your information and then print the form, but a safer option is to download it first, then save it to your hard drive as you fill it out so you dont lose your entries if your browser crashes or you accidentally close it. After filling out and printing the form, you’ll sign it, attach copies of any required forms , and mail it in.

This process is simple and inexpensive; youll need to pay for postage, preferably a method you can track to prove you submitted your return on time. If youre due a refund, the IRS says it will process your payment within six to eight weeks for a paper return submitted by mail.

People who need to report information not included on Form 1040 will need to submit additional schedules. These might include one or more of the following:

For a complete list, see “Schedules for Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR.” You can fill out these schedules just as we described above for Form 1040.
