How to Increase a Tax Refund with a Home Business
  • When you prepare your tax return, you will just enter all of your businesss details into the self-employed section of TurboTax Self-Employed.
  • All the business-related information is entered into the T2125, Statement of Business Activities, which informs the CRA of your self-employment income and deductions as well as deductions.
  • The T2125 is sent to the CRA along with your other tax forms which make up your T1 General return.
  • If you own your unincorporated business with a partner , the same T2125 is filled out, however, there is some additional information relating to the partners which is required, and TurboTax Self-Employed takes care of that too.

If, on the other hand, you have chosen to incorporate your business, then you are required to file a separate return, a Corporation Tax Return, or T2, for the business itself. All of your personal income and credits stay on your return and the businesss income and credits stay on its own return.

How To Count Paid Wages

Wages count toward this cash back incentive only if they apply to the FICA tax, which is the U.S. federal payroll tax, and wages paid to a business owner’s relatives are not eligible. Though money used for hiring bonuses to compete with the likes of and McDonald’s can count as eligible wages for the ERC.

The first economic relief package did not allow businesses receiving Paycheck Protection Program loans to claim the ERC, but now they can as long as they exclude any PPP loan money used to pay wages, and importantly, have not applied for PPP loan forgiveness. In effect, employers have a choice as to whether they apply for forgiveness on the PPL loan or ERC. If they apply for forgiveness and are denied, they can still apply for the ERC after. And in addition, any wages outside those paid for from PPP loan funds are still eligible for the ERC.

If you use your home for business whether youre a contractor, sole trader, in partnership or own a company you can claim a portion of household expenses. You can claim 100% of expenses that are solely for business purposes, eg a business phone line. For the rest, you can claim the proportion of your house that you use for work.

In this example, the house is 100 square metres and the office 10 square metres 10% of the total area. So the owner can claim 10% of expenses not solely for business, eg a power bill. Whatever you claim, remember to keep a record of each item.

  • 10% of power and gas, but you can claim more than this if you can prove you use more for business.

    How Do I Get My Refund If I Have Not Given My Account Number On Time Or At All Or If My Bank Account Has Been Closed

    If the Tax Administrations database does not contain records of a bank account number belonging to the individual taxpayer who gets a refund, a money order will be made out in Nordea Bank and sent to the taxpayer. However, if the amount is less than 15 it is paid as a money order only on the taxpayers request.

    Nordea will send you a letter with the money order, using your address in the Tax Administrations records. You cannot receive the money order unless the address is in Finland.

    After you have received the letter, you can cash the refund at a branch office of Nordea that offers cash withdrawal and deposit services. You must do so in 28 days. For more instructions, see the letter from Nordea. We recommend that you bring the letter with you when you visit the Nordea office to cash the refund.

    If you have not cashed the money order in 28 days, Nordea sends your refund back to the Tax Administration. You will then receive a letter asking you to inform the Tax Administration of your bank account number.     Amend Prior Tax Returns

    Did you know you can amend tax returns up to 10 years back to trigger a refund from a prior year? Perhaps youve missed tax credits or deductions from prior years its easy to do, and Im sure most of us have made simple mistakes on our tax return.

    The good news is that you can easily adjust your tax return by completing a form called T1-ADJ . Note that you may be able to make changes online with the Change my return service available in CRAs My Account. Make sure youre amending a prior return and not filing a second tax return for that year.

    Here are a few other commonly missed tax deductions and credits that can put more money back into your wallet:

    • Brokerage fees. Fees paid for stocks that were bought or sold in your non-registered account in the past 10 years can be deducted on your tax return. Better yet, open an account with Questrade and dont pay any fees for ETF purchases.
    • Capital losses. If you sold shares in a stock or ETF for less than the price you paid, you should record the capital loss for that year even if there are no capital gains in the same year to offset it. Thats because a capital loss can be carried forward to future years and eventually be used to offset any capital gains in the future.
    • Disability amount If you have a child born with a severe disability you can get a credit for the disability amount. You must get your doctor to fill out a certificate confirming the diagnosis.

    Here are some examples of lesser-known deductions, that as a new business, you absolutely want to take advantage of:

    Home-Office Deduction

    As a new business owner, theres a good chance you operate out of a home office. In fact, according to 2018 data from the U.S. Small Business Administration, about half of all businesses are home-based.

    If you have a dedicated home office that you regularly use only for your business and your home office is your principal place of business, youre eligible to deduct a portion of your home-related expenses. These could include mortgage interest, homeowners insurance, repairs, utilities and depreciation.

    Alternately, you could use the simplified method to calculate this deduction, and youd be able to deduct $5 per square foot for business use of your home, up to $1,500.

    Startup Costs

    If your startup costs were $50,000 or less, in your first year of operation, you can deduct up to $5,000 of those costs. The deduction is reduced for every dollar of costs greater than $50,000 up to $55,000. For example, if your costs before launching were $54,500, youd be able to deduct $500 the first year .

    How The Tax Credit Works

    The ERC started with first federal Covid economic relief package, and it is was recently expanded to give businesses the opportunity to claim more money back from wages they paid to employees in 2020 and 2021. Businesses can get money for wages paid through the end of 2021 and retroactive payments for 2020 wages.

    Eligible businesses can claim up to 70% back on up to $10,000 in wages paid to employees, or a maximum amount of $7,000 per employee for each quarter of the calendar year. It adds up to a potential total of $28,000 in cash back per employee annually.

    The Employee Retention Credit is geared towards small and midsize businesses because you currently need to have 500 employees or less to be eligible. On top of the employee threshold, businesses currently need to see a 20% reduction in gross receipts in one 2021 quarter compared to the same quarter in 2019, or if they didn’t see this reduction, businesses would need to have been partially or fully shut down by government during the quarters for which they are claiming the ERC. The 2020 CARES Act legislation required gross receipts in a calendar quarter below 50% of gross receipts when compared to the same calendar quarter in 2019 to qualify.

    The Drawback Of Tax Refunds

    Many people use tax refunds as a means of forced saving. They over-estimate the amount of tax they must pay, in order to get a hefty refund in April. But the drawback to this is that they don’t have the use of that money during the year. The IRS is using it for up to 12 months, and taxpayers won’t get any interest for what could be thought of as a type of loan.

    It’s a balancing actyou want to pay enough in estimated taxes and withholding to avoid fines and penalties without paying so much that you have a huge tax refund of money you didn’t get to use during the year.

    What Is Excess Loss

    The IRS defines excess loss as the amount by which the total deductions from all trades or businesses exceed a taxpayers total gross income and gains from those trades or businesses, plus $250,000, or $500,000 for a joint return.

    This means that you cant claim a business loss of more than $250,000/$500,000 for one year. However, you may be able to carry an excess loss forward to a future tax year.

    Don’t Blur The Lines Between The Company’s Money And Your Own

    Many small businesses get caught out by the so-called ‘deemed dividend’ rules. Under tax law, loans and advances to private company shareholders or their associates are deemed to be taxable unfranked dividends for the shareholders. The intention of these rules is to stop the profits of private companies being distributed to shareholders as tax-free “loans”.

    So, if you find yourself borrowing money from a company of which you’re a shareholder, try to ensure those borrowings are repaid by the time the company’s tax return for the year is due. If that isn’t possible, declare a dividend and treat the amount as income, in which case, the dividend would be franked if applicable.

    Alternatively, enter into a complying loan agreement, complete with commercial interest and capital payments and a defined loan period.

    Consider the tax consequences of the private use of company assets for less than market value, because this can also be caught by the deemed dividend rules. The amount of the deemed dividend is equivalent to the arm’s length price that would have been paid for the use of the assets, less any amount actually paid for the use.

    Research And Development Tax Credit

    The research and development tax credit is a federal income tax credit designed to encourage businesses to perform qualified research in the U.S. In most cases, businesses that qualify for the credit use it to offset federal and state income taxes. However, new and small businesses with little or no federal income tax liability can also use the R& D credit to offset up to $250,000 of the employer’s share of Social Security taxes for up to five years.

    To qualify for the R& D payroll tax offset, the company must have:

    • Five or fewer years of gross receipts, and
    • Less than $5 million in gross receipts in the year the company claims the credit

    To apply the R& D credit to your payroll tax liability, you need to complete Form 8974 and attach it to your payroll tax return.

    Purchases Made From Suppliers Outside Qubec Or Operators Of Specified Digital Platforms

    Since January 1, 2019, certain suppliers outside Québec and certain operators of specified digital platforms have been required to be Québec sales tax registrants and to collect QST in respect of certain taxable supplies made in Québec.     Special rules apply where such suppliers or operators make certain taxable supplies in Québec or enable other persons to do so. For example, an input tax refund cannot be claimed for the QST paid in respect of property or a service purchased from such a supplier or operator, even where the property or service is acquired by a registrant in the course of the registrant’s commercial activities.

    Such suppliers or operators are not supposed to collect the QST in respect of property or services supplied to purchasers who inform them that they are QST registrants and provide them with their QST registration numbers containing the letters “TQ”.

    Any QST registrant who pays QST to such a supplier or operator has to deal directly with the supplier or operator to obtain a refund of the tax.
