Hint: Filing Electronically Could Make Your Life A Lot Easier

How to Claim Your Stimulus Check

Even if you normally submit a paper tax return, it pays to file your 2020 taxes electronically. Not only will it be easier to calculate the Recovery Rebate Credit, but it could help you avoid other mistakes. Plus, if you’re due a refund from the Recovery Rebate Credit, you’ll get it a lot faster with an electronic return.

Recovery Rebate Credits For 2020 And 2021

To provide financial relief during pandemic, many Americans received three Economic Impact Payments in 2020 and 2021. The third payment, which began rolling out in March 2021, served as an advance payment of the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit.

If you didnt receive the latest EIP, you could be eligible to receive the following as part of your tax refund:

  • $1,400 for a single individual
  • $2,800 for a married couple filing jointly

If you received the EIP in 2021, you should have an IRS letter Notice 1444-C showing the amount you received so you can record it on your tax return.

  • If you didnt receive the most recent EIP, you can claim it when you file your 2021 tax return.

If you didnt receive the first or second EIPs, even though youre eligible based on your income, you need to file or amend your Tax Year 2020 returns to receive those payments.

Recovery Rebate Credit: What It Is And How To Claim It

The third stimulus payment was technically an advance on the 2021 tax credit. And because the IRS did not yet have access to your 2021 tax information when the advance payments were sent out, they relied on the most recent information they had on file for you to determine how much to send.

When you receive Letter 6475, compare the amount you received against how much you were eligible for based on your 2021 tax information. If you think you received less than you were entitled to, you might be able to recover those funds by claiming the balance via the recovery rebate credit on your 2021 tax return. This could happen if, for example, you welcomed a newborn in 2021 or will be claiming a new qualifying dependent on your 2021 taxes.

On their website, the IRS states that most people who were eligible for the third round of payments have already received the funds. But if for some reason you were eligible for the payment but never received it, you also might be able to recover that money via the recovery rebate credit.

Your Financial Situation Changed From 2019 To 2020

Any changes to your financial situation in 2020 may affect your payment amount and receipt.

For most people, this will result from job or income loss due to the pandemic. If your income was higher than the phaseout thresholds in 2019, but your hours were cut or you only worked for part of 2020, you can claim the stimulus money you didnt receive using the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return.

If you had a baby in 2020, got married or divorced, you were previously claimed as a dependent, or you have a child who aged out of being claimed as a dependent, you may receive more after claiming the credit as well.

When youre ready to file 2020 federal taxes, an accountant or tax filing service may be helpful to clarify your exact eligibility. If you file on your own, your Form 1040 will include a Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet to help you determine the total amount youre eligible for.

Getting A Missing Check Can Be Difficult But Worth The Trouble

by Adam Shell, AARP, February 4, 2022

Nobody wants to leave money on the table, especially a stimulus payment from the U.S. government that theyre eligible for but didnt receive. In late January the Internal Revenue Service announced that all third-round stimulus checks had been sent. But the IRS also noted that not all eligible Americans received the full amount theyre entitled to.

The good news? Theres still time to get whats owed to you.

Uncle Sam which issued 175 million third-round payments, totaling over $400 billion, through the end of 2021 reminded people that they can claim any remaining stimulus money theyre entitled to but didnt get by claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 income tax return.

The rebate, which comes as a tax credit of up to $1,400 per eligible person on your 2021 return, will either lower the amount of tax you owe or boost the size of your refund. The golden prize of a tax return is a tax credit, says Mark Steber, chief tax information officer at Jackson Hewitt, a tax preparation service. The Recovery Rebate Credit is a dollar-for-dollar tax-liability offset.

What To Know About Free Government Money

Economic stimulus payments are designed to help citizens pay their bills and increase consumer spending to improve the economy. Those stimulus payments arent taxable they are a gift from the government. There is no need to claim stimulus checks since stimulus payments arent considered part of your income. That also means that the additional payments dont affect your income tax bracket, so its essentially free money.

Everyone should have received two stimulus payments in 2020a payment of $1,200 per adult and then a second payment of $600 per adult. To be eligible for the 2020 stimulus checks you needed to earn less than $75.000 per year if you are single or less than $150,000 per year if you are married and file a joint tax return.

Government stimulus payments are considered an advance payment of a tax credit, and tax credits arent taxable income. Since stimulus money is considered a tax credit, you may even qualify to get money back. If you pay taxes and arent considered a dependent on someone elses income tax, then you are eligible to claim the tax credit.

There is a distinct difference between a tax deduction and a tax credit. A tax deduction is an expense that you can subtract from your taxable income. Once you calculate your total income, you subtract any deductions and that amount becomes your taxable income. A tax credit, on the other hand, is taken after you calculate your taxable income, so it is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in your tax bill.

How To Claim Missing Stimulus Check Money On Your Taxes

Now’s the time to claim all the money you’re owed if you haven’t received it already. Before you sit down to file your taxes and claim the credit, make sure you know the total amount you received in the third EIP and any plus-up payments for a smooth process.

    Who’s Eligible For The Payment

Those eligible for the money could include people whose tax situation changed in 2021, but the change was not reflected in their latest tax return.

For example, parents who welcomed a child in 2021 may be eligible for the $1,400 payments as long as they meet income requirements.

Eligibility for the third round of stimulus checks, issued earlier this year as part of President Joe Biden‘s American Rescue Plan, was based on a family’s last tax return filed.

Since babies born in 2021 were not factored in, the $1,400 checks will be applied to their parent or guardian’s 2021 tax return.

Others may be eligible for more money as well due to a change in income or the addition of a dependent.

Payments begin to phase out for people who make more than those income limits.

They completely phase out for individuals who make more than $80,000 and couples who make more than $160,000.

The number of families still owed a $1,400 stimulus check is not yet known but it is estimated to be in the millions.

The figure wont be known until the total number of births for 2021 is revealed.

    Payments Were Technically Tax Credits

Still waiting on your stimulus check? How to get it in your tax refund

The stimulus payments in 2020 and 2021 were not taxable income because they were actually advance payments of tax credits. A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the amount of your tax liability. Typically, you claim a tax credit when you file your taxes. The credit is used to offset any balance due and, in the case of a refundable tax credit, any excess comes to you in the form of a refund.

Due to the severity of the pandemic, Congress determined that sending payments to Americans immediately was a better course of action than waiting for them to claim the credit on their tax returns. This provided rapid relief from the severe economic repercussions of the pandemic.

If taxpayers had been forced to wait until tax filing time to receive these credits, the financial consequences would have no doubt been much more severe. Nevertheless, the function and taxability of the stimulus payments was the same as if taxpayers had received a more traditional tax credit.

How Do I Get The Stimulus Payments

To issue the third stimulus payment, the IRS needs to know current information about you and your children. If you have submitted a 2019 or a 2020 tax return, or if you used the IRS Non-filer Portal in 2020 to claim your stimulus payments, then the IRS has enough information to send your family your third stimulus automatically.

If you have not submitted any information to the IRS in the last year or if you need to claim any of the first two stimulus payments you can submit your information through our simplified filing portal and get your payments.

    Golden State Stimulus Taxation

While individual states that offered stimulus checks may have different rules, the California Franchise Tax Board confirms on its website that the Golden State Stimulus payments are not subjected to state tax.

As with the federal stimulus payments, the Golden State Stimulus cannot be claimed as income.

Therefore, it cannot be claimed on an income tax return.
