College Tuition Credit Or Deduction

New York allows residents to choose either a credit or deduction for qualified tuition expenses. If you were a state resident for the entire year and paid qualified undergraduate tuition for yourself, your spouse or a dependent, you may be eligible for the credit or deduction.

The refundable credit can be up to $400 per student. If you opt to take the deduction instead of the credit, the maximum amount you could deduct is $10,000 per eligible student note that you can only take the deduction if you itemize deductions on your federal income tax return.

Nonresidents and part-year residents can claim the deduction but not the credit. Tax bonus: You can qualify for the credit or deduction even if you used funds from a tax-advantaged 529 college savings plan to pay for the tuition.

Get An Nys Tax Dept Letter Don’t Throw It Out Or You Might Delay Your Refund

ALBANY You filed your taxes and you’re waiting on your New York state refund.

Did you get some mail from the state Department of Taxation and Finance?

Don’t throw it out. It’s not junk mail. And if you ignore it, your refund will be delayed or withheld entirely.

Hundreds of thousands of New York filers are receiving letters asking for proof of the state taxes withheld from their wages in 2018, with the Tax Department demanding copies of W-2s or paycheck stubs from the filer’s employer.

The letters are not a hoax.

A Tax Department spokesman said the agency sent out about 270,000 copies in 2018, and the number has been on the rise in recent years an increase that matches up with anecdotal evidence from accountants, some of whom have grown frustrated with the demands.

The letters have an official state Department of Taxation and Finance seal at the top left, followed by the filer’s address and this sentence in bold: “We need additional information before we can send your New York State income tax refund.”

First, if you receive a letter from us asking for documentation to support what you claimed on your return, dont panic it doesn’t mean that you did anything wrong, state Taxpayer Rights Advocate Margaret Neri said in a statement.

The Tax Department simply needs to ensure that refunds only go to those entitled to them and that returns filed are accurate.”

Filing An Extension With The Irs

Form Ct

Taxpayers seeking an extension to file federal income tax returns must file Form 4868 with the IRS either electronically or by mail, or make a payment for most of their owed taxes. IRS guidelines state filers that make a payment for all or a portion of their owed income taxes do not need to file Form 4868.

“The IRS will automatically process an extension of time to file when you pay part or all of your estimated income tax electronically,” according to IRS.

Individual tax filers can use the IRS Free File tool to request an automatic tax filing extension. However, filers must estimate tax liability on the form and should pay any amount due.

The IRS also said: “Don’t file Form 4868 if you want the IRS to figure your tax or you’re under a court order to file your return by the regular due date.”

Lisa Greene-Lewis, a CPA and tax expert with TurboTax said individuals should try to pay at least 90% of their taxes by May 17 in order to avoid penalties.

Filers may also request an installment agreement with the IRS to pay taxes over six years, she said.

If approved, the extension will allow filers to filed a return until October 15.

Why Did I Get A Letter

The letter doesn’t really explain why a filer is getting the letter.

But the Tax Department stressed it doesn’t mean the filer did anything incorrectly.

Instead, Tax Department spokesman James Gazzale said they are sent in two cases: When an employer doesn’t submit a required wage report by the Jan. 31 deadline, or when the amount of withholdings claimed on a filer’s state tax forms doesn’t line up with the number the employer sent in.

Last year, about 2 percent of filers got the letter, he said.

The state first began sending out the letters in 2008, with the number sent increasing each year.
