A Note About Audit Protection Plans

Can I Refile My Taxes If I Forgot Something

Filing for free usually means not having something called audit protection, which usually comes with the pricier tax-prep packages.

Audit protection works like insurance against the possibility of a CRA audit, according to Toronto tax lawyer David Rotfleisch.

Most taxpayers will never need it. However, if the CRA does come knocking on your door, audit protection will take care of responding to CRA inquiries and audit requests at a much lower cost than hiring an accountant or tax lawyer.

The unknown is the level of expertise of the people providing the representation services, Rotfleisch said. In a complex audit situation, he added, if the representatives do not have the proper expertise, the taxpayers situation may very well be prejudiced.

How To File An Amended Return

How Do I Refile My 2018 Taxes

To proceed with preparing and filing your amended return, all you need to do is file Form 1040X, Amended Tax Return, along with the corrected or additional documents you didn’t originally file with your return. This will amend your return and give you an accurate picture of your tax situation. Federal returns can now be amended by electronically filing them, but only as far back as 2019 .

The IRS advises that you file an amended return with a claim for refund within three years of the day you filed your original return, or within two years of the day you paid outstanding tax, whichever is later. If you file a return before the due date , the IRS treats it as though you filed it on the due date. Withholding is deemed to be tax paid on the due date.

If you experienced changes related to any of the items above that have occurred since tax reform went into effect, you should file amended returns as soon as possible to correct any errors or oversights.

How To Complete An Amended Return

You can file your amended return;electronically, or on paper.;If you file electronically, follow the instructions for your software provider.

In either case, make sure to indicate that its an amended return before filling it out.;

For paper returns, mark the oval labeled Amended Return. Complete the new return using the corrected information, as if it were the original return. Do not make any adjustments to your amended return to show that you received a refund or paid a balance due with your original return. Attach a complete copy of your federal amended return, if applicable.

If your amended return results in additional tax due, interest must be paid on the tax you owe from the due date on the original return to the date filed or postmarked.

What To Do If You Made A Mistake Or Forgot A Deduction On Your Tax Return

Your taxes have been filed, tax season is over, you breathe a sign of relief… but you just found an error on your tax return. You may be due more of a refund, or even worse, you may owe some taxes. So what do you do?

Don’t panic. This is exactly why the IRS has Form 1040X — to correct any errors you or a tax professional find in your tax return. If correcting the error will get you a refund, you have up to three years after the filing or due date or two years after paying taxes to amend — whichever is later. If you owe taxes, you should amend as soon as possible to minimize the interest and any penalties that may be assessed, since the IRS will start charging you based on the due date of the original tax return.

What you should not do is wait for the IRS to find the error and send you a letter. This may take time, and if you owe taxes, the associated penalty and interest will be higher the longer it takes to find the error. Also, while the IRS is good at finding income that has been left off of a tax return, they are not as skilled in finding omitted deductions or credits that you may have missed — simply because they aren’t structured in this way and do not have the tools to know every taxpayer’s situation. So if you find you missed something, amend the tax return quickly with those deductions or credits and get the money you are owed back.
