Do You Have Until Midnight To File My Taxes

Don't Miss

What To Do If You Owe And Youre Late Filing Taxes

If you file your return late and you owe the government taxes, unfortunately there will be a failure to file penalty to pay.

According to the IRS website, the late filing penalty fee is set at 5% of the amount you owe the government. A failure to pay the penalty adds an extra 5% for each month you dont file your tax return up to a maximum of 25%.

Second, if you owe a late payment penalty, it is assessed at 0.5% on the taxes owed which is then compounded monthly to a maximum of 25%.

Apart from the failure to file penalty, there is also an interest assessed on your taxes each month you dont pay taxes owed. Interest is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Lets look at an example if youre late filing taxes.

Lets say you file your taxes late and owe the government $500 from your tax return.

Failure to File Penalty

$500 x 0.05 = $25

Lets say you are 3 months late filing, this increases to

500 x 0.05 x 3 = $75

In addition if you are late in paying your taxes :

500 x 0.005 x 3 = $7.50

We are already at $582.50 . Thats the original $500 you owe plus $82.50 in penalties.

As you can see the consequence of filing taxes late and especially if you owe the government gets expensive very quickly. Youre paying 16.5% more just because you were late.

Paying Other Business Taxes

Making your tax payments online is the best and easiest way to pay. LLC owners, sole proprietors, or partners in partnerships can use one of several IRS e-pay options, including direct debit from a bank account, credit card, or debit card.

Corporation and partnership returns should use the IRS Electronic Federal Tax Payment System .

CHICAGO — So, what if you don’t drop that tax return in the mailbox at the stroke of midnight?

Officially, the IRS sticks by a passage on the agency’s website: “If you do not file your return by the due date, you may have to pay a failure-to-file penalty and interest.”

But experts say waiting in line at the post office on Tax Night isn’t necessary.

“We certainly encourage everyone to file on time,” said Tom Ochsenschlager, vice president of tax for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. “But if you’re a little bit late, the IRS will probably be pretty reasonable.”

And here’s one more secret. That midnight deadline for filing taxes is actually midnight Pacific time, giving many of the nation’s procrastinators as much as a three-hour reprieve.

Online filers, especially, may appreciate the time. The reality is that the annual ritual of dashing to the post office to get returns postmarked on April 15 is being replaced by late nights on the computer using tax-preparation software. A majority of returns are now filed electronically.

IRS officials acknowledged the small window of opportunity at a January teleconference, according to Kay Bell, a tax editor with That would mean 3 a.m. for East Coast procrastinators, 2 a.m. for those in the Central time zone and 1 a.m. Mountain Time.

Pushing it beyond that can be risky even if the IRS doesn’t have a room full of staffers scanning for tax returns postmarked April 16 or 17.

May 17 Tax Deadline Explained: What Time Are Taxes Due What If I File Late

Do I have to file a tax return?

The deadline for filing individual tax returns in the U.S. is later than usual this yearMonday, May 17.

Earlier this year, the Internal Revenue Service pushed back the date and gave most taxpayers an extra month to file their 2020 returns due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“This continues to be a tough time for many people, and the IRS wants to continue to do everything possible to help taxpayers navigate the unusual circumstances related to the pandemic, while also working on important tax administration responsibilities,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in March.

“Even with the new deadline, we urge taxpayers to consider filing as soon as possible, especially those who are owed refunds. Filing electronically with direct deposit is the quickest way to get refunds, and it can help some taxpayers more quickly receive any remaining stimulus payments they may be entitled to.”

What’s The Irs Deadline For Filing Your 2021 Tax Return

The deadline for filing federal taxes for most taxpayers will be Monday, April 18, 2022. That’s because April 15 is recognized as a holiday, Emancipation Day, in Washington, DC.

“By law, Washington, D.C., holidays impact tax deadlines for everyone in the same way federal holidays do,” according to a statement from the IRS.Taxpayers in Maine and Massachusetts, however, have until April 19, because of the observance of Patriots’ Day in those states.

What Happens If I Miss The Tax Deadline

If you are owed a refund, there is no penalty for filing federal taxes late, though this may be different for your state taxes. Still, it’s best to e-file or postmark your individual tax return as early as possible.

If you owe the IRS, penalties and interest start to accrue on any remaining unpaid taxes after the filing deadline. The late-filing penalty is 5% of the taxes due for each month your return is behind, with fees increasing to up to 25% of your due balance after 60 days have passed. You may also incur a late-payment penalty, which is 0.5% of the taxes due for each month your return is late, with penalties increasing to up to 25% of your unpaid tax, depending on how long you take to file.

Another caveat: If you’re serving in the military — in a combat zone or a contingency operation in support of the armed forces — you may be granted additional time to file, according to the IRS.

Canadas 2021 Tax Deadline Is Today

At What Age Does A Child Have To File A Tax Return?

Todays the day: Just before midnight is the deadline for people across the country including the Sunshine Coast to turn in their individual tax returns, and pay any taxes owed to the CRA.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, this years tax season wasnt extended.

Canada Revenue Agency spokesperson David Nunes says the filing deadline this year is still the same as every other year: April 30th at 11:59 pm.

He also discourages people from putting off filing just because you dont owe any taxes, or youre expecting a refund.

And even though that deadline is right around the corner, we highly recommend everybody sends in their tax returns by the deadline, just to make sure that your benefits and your credits for the following year dont get interrupted, Nunes tells Vista Radio.

He notes if you dont file your taxes on time, your future credits and benefits like the Canada Child Benefit and the Covid Recovery Benefit might actually get interrupted.

According to Nunes, this means you might have to wait longer on the payments that youre already entitled to.

If you received EI or Covid Benefits throughout the year, Nunes explains that you actually do need to include them in your tax return. At this point, he says you should have received a tax slip from the government.

And if COVID-19 forced you to work from home, Nunes says you can actually claim up to $400 in office expenses without the need for any receipts this time around.

Paper Returns The Postmark Rules

Some people are old fashioned and still like to fill out paper tax forms. If they owe any money with their return, they’re likely to write out a paper check to the IRS for the amount due. If that’s you, make sure the envelope is postmarked by May 17. But don’t expect your post office to stay open until midnight on Tax Day like they used to years ago , so make sure you get there before their regular hours expire if you’re hand delivering your return at the postal counter.

How Do I Know My Tax Return Has Been Filed

One additional, and important feature of NETFILE is the confirmation process. Once your personal income tax return has been filed, your return is uploaded to the CRA through NETFILE, as you will receive a confirmation number which is your proof that your tax return was filed and received by the CRA.

This confirmation number is important for two reasons, the first being, that you know your return was submitted and received by the CRA, and secondly, if there are ever any questions from the CRA around the filing of your return, like the date it was filed, you have the proof.

You will successfully NETFILE your tax return when you receive a confirmation number at the end of the process. If you do not receive a confirmation number, your tax return has not been transmitted to the CRA through NETFILE.
