A Simplified Example Of Brackets

For a simple example of how progressive taxation works, say the government has three , set up like this:

  • 10%: $0 to $20,000
  • 20%: $20,001 to $50,000
  • 30%: $50,001 and above

Now, let’s say your taxable income is $75,000. This would put you in the 30% bracket.

  • The first $20,000 of that would be taxed at 10%, or $2,000.
  • The next $30,000 would be taxed at 20%, or $6,000.
  • The final $25,000 of your income would be taxed at 30%, or $7,500.
  • Your total tax would be: $2,000 + $6,000 + $7,500 = $15,500.

In this scenario, even though you’re in the 30% bracket, you would actually pay only about 20.7% of your income in taxes.

Will The Child Tax Credit Advance Affect My Refund

It is possible for the Child Tax Credit advance to reduce your tax refund. Unlike the stimulus payments, this is not an entirely new tax credit. $2,000 is an existing credit, and $1,000 of that will be advanced.

Lets say your 2020 and 2021 tax returns will otherwise be identical. In 2020, you got a $2,000 Child Tax Credit which turned into a $2,000 refund. In 2021, well assume your childs age gets you $3,000.

  • You will get half of that $3,000, or $1,500, as six monthly payments of $250 during the second half of 2020.
  • You will get the other half, or $1,500, when you file your tax return.
  • When you file your tax return, the amount of Child Tax Credit youre claiming for refund is now $1,500 instead of $2,000. Even though the total credit is bigger this year, you already got part of it.
  • That means your refund will be $500 smaller than the $2,000 you got in 2020.

Even though you get more total money, you need to remember your 2021 refund may be smaller or you could end up owing money based on the other taxes you owe. Its similar to having changes in your withholding or estimated tax payments.

The IRS received 167 million calls this tax season, which is four times the number of calls in 2019. And based on the recent report, only 7 percent of calls reached a telephone agent for help. While you could try calling the IRS to check your status, the agency’s live phone assistance is extremely limited right now because the IRS says it’s working hard to get through the backlog. You shouldn’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

Most Don’t Have To File An Amended Return

Most taxpayers don’t need to file an amended return to claim the exemption. If the IRS determines you are owed a refund on the unemployment tax break, it will automatically correct your return and send a refund without any additional action from your end.

The only reason to file an amended return is if the calculations now make you eligible for additional federal credits and deductions not already included on your original tax return, like the Additional Child Tax Credit or the Earned Income Tax Credit. The IRS said it will be sending notices in November and December to people who didn’t claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit but may now be eligible for them.

If you think you’re now eligible for deductions or credits based on an adjustment, the most recent IRS release has a list of people who should file an amended return.

If you receive your tax refund by direct deposit, you may see IRS TREAS 310 listed for the transaction. The 310 code simply identifies the transaction as a refund from a filed tax return in the form of an electronic payment . Revised Statute 47:103 allows a six-month extension of time to file the individual income tax return to be granted on request.
