How To Know If My Taxes Were Filed

Don't Miss

Stage : Refund Approved

What To Do If You Haven’t Filed Taxes In Years

This means the IRS has processed and approved your return. This usually happens about three weeks after the IRS indicates theyâve received your return.

Once the IRS processes your return, youâll see an estimated date for when the money will be deposited into your bank account, like so:

If you donât receive your refund by the date mentioned on this page, the IRS suggests contacting your bank first, to make sure there arenât any problems with your account.

Request Electronic Communications From The Department

The best way to communicate with the Tax Department about your return is to open an Online Services account and request electronic communications for both Bills and Related Notices and Other Notifications. To ensure that you receive future;communications in the Message Center of your Online Services Account Summary homepage, create your account now, before filing your next;return.;

Tracing A Refund Check That’s Gone Missing

There’s a process in place in case you lose your paper check or if it goes missing. You can ask the IRS to trace it by calling 800-829-1954, or by filling out Form 3911, “Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.”

The IRS will determine whether the check was cashed, and it will issue a replacement check if it wasn’t. Otherwise, it will create a claims package that includes a copy of the endorsed, cashed check. Following a review of the information, including the signature on the back of the cashed check, the agency will decide whether to issue a replacement check. This process can take about six weeks.

Direct depositthe electronic transfer of funds directly into your bank accountis the safest way to get your refund. You won’t have to worry about a paper check getting lost in the mail, stolen, or misplaced once you have it in hand. But keep in mind that the IRS doesn’t allow more than three direct deposits into the same bank account per tax year.

Check with your bank to see whether the refund has been received if you’re waiting on a direct deposit, and the anticipated date has passed. Incorrectly entering your bank account number or routing information on your tax return could cause your refund to go astray, so double-check that information. You can request that the deposit be stopped if the refund hasn’t yet posted to the IRS system.

When To Request A Payment Trace

Method of payment
Check mailed to a foreign address 9 weeks

At first glance, the steps to request a payment trace can look daunting. You’ll need to print and mail the completed;Form 3911 from the IRS; to start tracing your child tax credit payment. If you need help completing the form, contact your local tax consultant. Before you do, there are a few pointers to keep in mind.;

  • An IRS representative told CNET that there isn’t an abbreviation or code to include in the “Inquiry” field. You’ll need to be as specific as possible about what payment you’d like to track. Make sure to specify that you’re looking to trace a child tax credit check and the month the payment was disbursed.;
  • If you filed taxes jointly, both parents will need to sign the form to start the payment trace process.;
  • Be sure to check whether or not your money was sent via direct deposit or check. If your banking information is listed on the Child Tax Credit Update Portal, we recommend choosing the direct deposit box.;
  • You’ll need to mail the form where you would usually send a paper tax return in your area. The IRS has;a list of addresses and fax numbers;to help.;
  • You should not request a payment trace to determine your eligibility or to confirm your child tax credit amount.;
  • It could take up to 60 days to receive a response.

    File Your Tax Return Electronically

    Combining both direct deposit and electronic filing can greatly speed up your tax refund. Since filing electronically requires the use of a tax software program, it can flag errors that may cause processing delays by the IRS. These errors may include incorrect Social Security numbers, dependents dates of birth, and misspelling of names.

    You can electronically file your tax return for free using the IRS Free File Program if your adjusted gross income is less than $72,000. Most simple tax returns can also generally be filed for free, although you may be charged to file your state taxes.

    If your tax situation is more complicated if you sold property, paid business expenses or earned investment or business income, for exampleyou should consider hiring a tax professional. Having a knowledgeable tax professional, such as an enrolled agent, certified public accountant or other tax professional can help review your tax return and identify any mistakes that may slow down the processing of your tax refund.

    Why Would Your Refund Come By Snail Mail

    There are a couple of reasons that your refund would be mailed to you. Your money can only be electronically deposited into a bank account with your name, your spouse’s name or a joint account. If that’s not the reason, you may be getting multiple refund checks, and the IRS can only direct-deposit up to three refunds to one account. Additional refunds must be mailed. Also, your bank may reject the deposit and this would be the IRS’ next best way to refund your money quickly.;

    It’s also important to note that for refunds, direct deposit isn’t always automatic. Some are noticing that like the stimulus checks, the first two payments for the child tax credit were mailed. Just in case, parents should sign in to the IRS portal;to check that the agency has their correct banking information. If not, parents can add it for the next payment in September.

    What If My Payment Amount Isn’t What I Calculated

    Your child tax credit checks may have been less or more than you expected. If you meet all of the child tax credit requirements and find that you’re receiving less or more money than expected, there are a few steps you can take. Start by checking your eligibility based on your most recent tax return using the;IRS Eligibility Assistant.;

    Note that the IRS said that it could be using your 2019 tax return to determine your eligibility. Once the IRS processes your 2020 tax return, it will automatically adjust your advance monthly payments by increasing or decreasing how much you get. If you didn’t file your taxes, use the;Child Tax Credit Non-filer Sign-up Tool;to add your information and determine eligibility. It’s unclear if the IRS will make up any differences in remaining payments or if the difference will be included in next year’s tax refund.;

    One reason parents may get less money is if they fall out of the income bracket for the maximum amount for monthly payments. Married couples filing jointly earning up to $150,000 and single filers earning up to $75,000 can qualify for the full amount. If you make more, the monthly check is reduced by $50 for every $1,000 over the income bracket. So, if you earn $80,000 as a single filer, you may only be eligible for up to $200 per month — depending on other eligibility factors.;
