Here are the dates for the states that are participating this year, including the states that already hosted tax-free weekends. The majority of states are hosting theirs this weekend, including Florida, which started its event on July 31. This year, 17 states are participating overall, with 11 states offering specials this weekend, according to a map provided by Deal News.
Alabama: Alabamas tax-free weekend already happened. It was July 16-18.

Items That Do Not Qualify
The following items do not qualify for exemption during the sales tax holiday:
- items sold for $100 or more
- clothing subscription boxes
- specially-designed athletic activity or protective-use clothing or footwear
- For example, golf cleats and football pads are usually worn only when people play golf or football, so they do not qualify for the exemption.
- Tennis shoes, jogging suits and swimsuits, however, can be worn for other than athletic activity and qualify for the exemption.
Cloth and disposable fabric face masks meet the definition of an article of clothing and are exempt from sales tax during the upcoming Sales Tax Holiday.
The statute specifically excludes special clothing or footwear that is primarily designed for athletic activity or protective use and that is not normally worn except when used for the activity. Industrial or medical grade masks or other similar personal protection equipment are not exempt during the sales tax holiday.
If a cloth or disposable fabric face mask is sold with a filter, the mask is exempt during the holiday however, replacement filters are taxable.

Do Coupons And Sales Affect The Tax Holiday
- Buy one, get one free: If an item costs more than $100, the sales tax will apply even if you’re getting a second item of the same value for free.
- Buy one, get one half off: If the first item costs $110 and you can get a second for half off , then sales tax will be charged on the first item, but not the second.
- Manufacturer’s coupon: If an item costs $110 and the customer presents a manufacturer’s coupon that lowers the price to $90, sales tax will still be applied. A manufacturer’s coupon does not change the sale price of an item.
- Store coupon or discount: If a store coupon or discount brings the price of an item under $100, it will be exempt from sales tax.
