Still Waiting On Your Federal Tax Refund The Latest On Irs Delays And How To Track Your Money

Coming NOW!! $10,200 Unemployment Tax Refund Benefits Extension UPDATE PUA PEUC Taxes Return Break

Your federal tax refund check could take up to 120 days to arrive. Here’s what else we found.

If you see “IRS TREAS 310” on your bank statement, it could be your income tax refund.

Many taxpayers are still waiting for their federal tax refund checks to arrive, as the IRS is facing a massive backlog of unprocessed individual returns, 2020 returns with errors and amended returns that require corrections or special handling. Refunds normally take around 21 days to process, but the IRS says delays could be 120 days.

The tax agency is also juggling stimulus checks, child tax credit payment problems and refunds for tax overpayment on unemployment benefits. The money could give families some financial relief but an overdue tax refund could also be a big help. Keep in mind that the IRS deadline for those that filed for a tax extension is approaching on Oct. 15. If you don’t file your 2020 tax return soon, you’ll likely owe late fees or more interest — and you could be missing out on your tax refund, stimulus checks or child tax credit payments, which you may only be eligible for with your 2020 tax return.

We’ll share the latest on delayed federal tax refunds and what you can do in the meantime. But it’s not easy to reach the tax agency by phone. Instead, you can track your refund online using the Where’s My Refund tool or check your IRS account . We’ll also explain what to do if you received a “math-error notice” from the IRS. This story is updated frequently.

How Should I Contact The Irs For Help

The IRS received 167 million calls this tax season, which is four times the number of calls in 2019. And based on the recent report, only 7 percent of calls reached a telephone agent for help. While you could try calling the IRS to check your status, the agency’s live phone assistance is extremely limited right now because the IRS says it’s working hard to get through the backlog. You shouldn’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

The IRS is directing people to the Let Us Help You page on its website for more information. It also advises taxpayers to get in-person help at Taxpayer Assistance Centers. You can contact your local IRS office or call to make an appointment: 844-545-5640. You can also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you’re eligible for assistance by calling them: 877-777-4778.

Though the chances of getting live assistance are slim, the IRS says you should only call the agency directly if it’s been 21 days or more since you filed your taxes online, or if the Where’s My Refund tool tells you to contact the IRS. You can call: 800-829-1040 or 800-829-8374 during regular business hours.

Most Don’t Have To File An Amended Return

Most taxpayers don’t need to file an amended return to claim the exemption. If the IRS determines you are owed a refund on the unemployment tax break, it will automatically correct your return and send a refund without any additional action from your end.

The only reason to file an amended return is if the calculations now make you eligible for additional federal credits and deductions not already included on your original tax return, like the Additional Child Tax Credit or the Earned Income Tax Credit. If you think you’re now eligible for deductions or credits based on an adjustment, the most recent IRS release has a list of people who should file an amended return.

The average IRS refund for those who paid too much tax on jobless benefits is $1,686.

How To Track Your Refund And Check Your Tax Transcript

The first way to get clues about your refund is to try the IRS online tracker applications: The Where’s My Refund tool can be accessed here. If you filed an amended return, you can check the Amended Return Status tool.

If those tools don’t provide information on the status of your unemployment tax refund, another way to see if the IRS processed your refund is by viewing your tax records online. You can also request a copy of your transcript by mail or through the IRS’ automated phone service by calling 1-800-908-9946.

Here’s how to check your tax transcript online:

1. Visit IRS.gov and log in to your account. If you haven’t opened an account with the IRS, this will take some time as you’ll have to take multiple steps to confirm your identity.

2. Once logged in to your account, you’ll see the Account Home page. Click View Tax Records.

3. On the next page, click the Get Transcript button.

4. Here you’ll see a drop-down menu asking the reason you need a transcript. Select Federal Tax and leave the Customer File Number field empty. Click the Go button.

5. The following page will show a Return Transcript, Records of Account Transcript, Account Transcript and Wage & IncomeTranscript for the last four years. You’ll want the 2020 Account Transcript.

6. This will open a PDF of your transcript: Focus on the Transactions section. What you’re looking for is an entry listed as Refund issued, and it should have a date in late May or June.

Is It Faster To File Electronically Or Mail In My Return

In most cases it is faster to file your return electronically. The IRS receives these returns faster than ones that were mailed in, which shortens the time in between when you submitted your return and when youll receive your refund.

File electronically with TaxSlayer and choose direct deposit to receive your refund sooner.

Is There Anything I Need To Do If I Have Shared Custody Of My Dependent

Delayed tax refunds could be coming back soon

For the first two stimulus checks, some parents who shared custody of a child but weren’t married to each other were entitled to each claim money for the same child. That was only if they alternated years for claiming the dependent — in other words, if one parent claimed the child on their taxes in odd years and the other claimed the child on their taxes in even years.

This is no longer allowed for the third check, and we’re told it won’t work that way for the child tax credit payments either. Here’s what we know so far about child tax credit and shared custody situations.

If the child switches homes this year, the parents will need to agree on who will claim the child on their taxes this year. The parent that claims the child and receives the child tax credit payments will need to fill out Form 8332 and include it with the tax return. If you don’t qualify or want to get the money in one lump sum, you can also opt out of early payments. Remember, if you’re not eligible but receive the money, you may have to pay the IRS back during tax time.

Has A Gst/hst Credit Recipient Died

An individual is not eligible to get GST/HST credit payments after they die. We may send out a payment after the date of death if we are not aware of the situation. If this happens, you have to return the payment to us, and let us know the date of the death of the recipient so we can update our records go to Find a CRA address.

Was the deceased recipient married or living common-law?

If the deceased recipient’s GST/HST credit included an amount for a spouse or common-law partner, the CRA will automatically determine that spouse or commonlaw partners eligibility for the remaining GST/HST credit payments for themselves and for any of their children. If the surviving spouse or commonlaw partner did not file a tax return, they have to do so to get the credit.

Was the deceased recipient single, separated, divorced, or widowed?

If the recipient died before the month in which we issue the credit, we cannot make any more payments in that persons name or to that persons estate.

If the recipient died during or after the month in which we issue the credit and the payment has not been cashed, return it to us so that we can send the payment to the persons estate.

If the recipient was getting a credit for a child, the childs new caregiver should contact us to request GST/HST credit payments for that child.

How Long Do I Have To Wait For My Federal Refund Check To Arrive

The Taxes That Are Already Coming

The IRS usually issues tax refunds within three weeks, but some taxpayers have been waiting months to receive their payments. If there are any errors, or if you filed a claim for an earned income tax credit or the child tax credit, the wait could be lengthy. If there is an issue holding up your return, the resolution “depends on how quickly and accurately you respond, and the ability of IRS staff trained and working under social distancing requirements to complete the processing of your return,” according to its website.

The date you get your tax refund also depends on how you filed your return. For example, with refunds going into your bank account via direct deposit, it could take an additional five days for your bank to post the money to your account. This means if it took the IRS the full 21 days to issue your check and your bank five days to post it, you could be waiting a total of 26 days to get your money. If you submitted a tax return by mail, the IRS says it could take six to eight weeks for your tax refund to arrive once it’s been processed.
