Robust Customer Service And A Guided User

How Do I File My Taxes Using TurboTax Online? – TurboTax Support Video

TurboTax is one of the top services for tax filing. Its free service brings the same expertise that has built a reputation in the industry. Those with W-2s and other simple tax returns will enjoy all it has to offer.

Free federal income tax and state tax returns are available and TurboTax Free Edition supports many of the important, commonly filed forms and schedules:

  • US individual income tax return
  • Unemployment income
  • Schedule EIC
  • Form 1099-INT
  • Form 1040-V payment vouchers

Certain forms and schedules associated with more complicated returns, such as Schedule SE , Schedule D , and educational forms, such as 1098-E and T require a paid tier.

TurboTax Free Edition advantages

  • Maximize refund: If you get a larger refund using a different service, TurboTax Free Edition users are entitled to a payment of $30. If IRS penalties should arise from calculation errors, TurboTax will pay the penalty and interest. You will be shown if you qualify for additional credits, to help get you a larger return.
  • Teaching tools: You will see your updated tax refund in real-time as you work through the process, and personalized insights will explain why you are receiving certain credits, helping you better understand your taxes.
  • Support and security: TurboTax Free Edition offers some of the most robust customer services of all the free tax software programs available, and it’s one of the most secure cloud services.

How Can I File For Free

As you likely know, most tax software charges you a fee to file your state and federal returns. But there are a couple of free options out there.

If your adjusted gross income, or AGI which is your income less some deductions, like 401 or IRA contributions is less than $73,000, you qualify for IRS Free File, a partnership between the government and several tax prep companies.

One thing to note: TurboTax and H& R Block, two of the most popular tax prep services, are no longer part of the Free File program. But there are eight other services available, including TaxAct and TaxSlayer. Just make sure you access Free File through the IRS website so it’s truly free. In the past, people have reported finding a service advertised as free via a Google search, only to owe money once they actually used it.

If you earn more than the income threshold, or have more complicated taxes, it can be difficult to find a free service. In the past, I’ve used Credit Karma Tax, now Cash App Taxes, to file for free and found it easy to use . You can also fill out the IRS’ Free File Fillable Forms on your own.

That said, it is easy to get upsold with these products, so watch out. If you had income from freelancing , rental properties or investments like stocks, you’ll have to upgrade at a cost.

When Should I Consider Hiring A Tax Professional

Turbotax Free File Stimulus Check

As a CPA and former IRS agent, there are certain filing situations that I believe should be left to the professionals. I have seen many do it yourself tax returns that landed in the hands of an IRS auditor. Here are some scenarios where you should consider hiring a tax pro:

  • You just started a business in the 2020 tax year or have a complex business structure, such as an S-corporation, partnership or corporation
  • You have employees or youre self-employed
  • You experienced a recent change in your tax situation
  • You sold a property in the 2020 tax year
  • You worked in multiple states

Why Isnt Turbotax Part Of Irs Free File Anymore

TurboTax announced in a blog post last July that it was not renewing its role with IRS Free File due to its limitations and conflicting demands from those outside the program that leave it unable to continue participating while still delivering all of the benefits that can help consumers make more money, save more, and invest for the future.

However, the company vowed not to give up on free tax filing options. TurboTax said it processed 17 million free tax filings last season of that, only 3 million came through the Free File program.

Moving forward, Intuit is committed to continuing to offer free tax preparation while accelerating innovation to address all of consumers financial problems, it added.

Its worth noting that TurboTax came under fire a few years ago for using code that hid its Free File page from Google results, as reported by ProPublica. It later changed the code.

Using H& r Block To File Your Taxes

H& R Blocks tax filing system is similar to TurboTaxs, but breaks down its services a little differently. Right off the bat you can choose between filing your taxes alone, or working with a tax pro.

If you file on your own, you have four tiers: Free Online , deluxe , premium , and self-employed . These plans can cost up to $84.99, plus an additional $36.99 per state.

Paid plans also come with perks like digitizing your current tax documents and storing them for six years, access to live or chat text support, and organizing your self-employment income. The free plan does not include those features.

If you choose to work with a tax pro,H& R Block offers three options. You can meet one-on-one in an office, drop your files off at an office and have the pro take over, or meet virtually over chat, phone, or video. These services start at $69, and a great choice for beginners.

Think of it this way: If you work with a professional this year, and get a step-by-step understanding of how to file your taxes, you may be a lot more comfortable doing them on your own next year.

All of these options are available if youd like to do your work in a web browser, but you can also download a version of H& R Block on Amazon, which runs as an app on your PC or Mac.

Heres what happened when we went looking.

Our first stop was Google. We searched for irs free file taxes.

And we thought we found what we were looking for: Ads from TurboTax and others directing us to free products.

The first link looked promising. It contained the word free five times! We clicked and were relieved to see that filing for free was guaranteed.

We started the process by creating the profile of a TaskRabbit house cleaner who took in $29,000. We entered extensive personal information. TurboTax asked us to click through more than a dozen questions and prompts about our finances.

After all of that, only then did we get the bad news: TurboTax revealed this wasnt going to be free at all. Turns out the house cleaner didnt qualify because he is a independent contractor. The charge? $119.99.

Then we tried with a second scenario. We went back to TurboTax.com and clicked on FREE Guaranteed. This time, we went through the process as a Walgreens cashier without health insurance, entering personal information and giving the company lots of sensitive data.

Again, TurboTax told us we had to pay this time because theres an extra form if you dont have insurance. The charge? $59.99.

But wait. Are the house cleaner and the cashier not allowed to prepare and file their taxes for free because of their particular tax situations? No! According to the agreement between the IRS and the companies, anyone who makes less than $66,000 can prepare and file their taxes for free.

Yet a simple way to cut down on costs which many people oddly don’t tap into remains using the IRS Free File system, if you qualify. Why pay $40 or $50 or more for online software if you don’t have to do so?

The Free File program at IRS.gov gives eligible taxpayers free access to brand name software programs offered by rival tax-prep companies. Those who qualify can use online software that prompts filers with key tax questions, does the math and allows you to file returns electronically for free. E-filing helps the IRS process returns and issue refunds more quickly than a return filed by paper.

    How Do You File Taxes

There are really only three options when it comes to filing taxes:

    • Manual filing: Manual tax filing is cut and dry. It is done by completing the IRS’s Form 1040, known as the Individual Tax Return form. Once it is completed, it is mailed to the IRS. However, paper tax returns are the slowest to process. The IRS had a backlog of nearly 3 million amended tax returns and a processing time of 20 weeks in the fourth quarter of 2021.
    • Using a tax preparation service or tax professional: There are numerous tax preparation services and tax professionals to aid you in your quest during tax season. Some individuals opt for professional services to help them wade through the sea of forms and tax jargon — tax credits and deductions.
    • Using tax software programs: Tax software programs are a popular option as well. Many online programs are offered to help walk people through the process of filing their taxes electronically. Of course, many of these software programs come with a cost but it may be well worth the small investment to receive your tax refund faster. Plus, most tax software programs come with fail-safe checks that ensure accuracy and maximize your deductions.
