When entering the information into the IRS address matching system note the following:

    • The address entered must match the address already on file with the IRS exactly.
    • The address on file is typically the address on your most recent tax return.
    • Spelling out the word street rather than using the abbreviation st. can be enough to cause an error.

    • Have your taxes in front of you and enter the address carefully as it is on your return.
    • If you entered your address as it appears on your return and it doesnt work, try using the standardized version of your address.

    What’s On A Tax Transcript

A transcript displays your tax information specific to the type of tax transcript you request.

The IRS is responsible for protecting and securing taxpayer information. Because of data thefts outside the tax system, cybercriminals often attempt to impersonate taxpayers and tax professionals. Thieves attempt to gain access to transcript data which can help them file fraudulent tax returns or steal additional data of other individuals and businesses listed on transcripts.

The IRS better protects your information from identity theft by partially masking the personally identifiable information of everyone listed on transcripts. All financial entries remain fully visible to assist with tax preparation, tax representation and income verification. Anyone with a need to know will be able to identify the taxpayer associated with the transcript based on the data that still displays.

About The New Tax Transcript And The Customer File Number

How to View Past History of Income Tax Returns

A new transcript format is now in place to better protect your information from identity theft. This new transcript partially masks the personally identifiable information of everyone listed on the tax return. All financial entries will remain fully visible to assist with tax preparation, tax representation and income verification. These changes apply to transcripts for both individual and business taxpayers.

The IRS is taking this action to better protect taxpayer data. Because of data thefts outside the tax system, cybercriminals often attempt to impersonate taxpayers and tax professionals. Thieves attempt to gain access to transcript data, which can help them file fraudulent tax returns or steal additional data of other individuals and businesses listed on the transcript.

Heres what is visible on the new tax transcript:

    • Last four digits of any EIN listed on the transcript: XX-XXX1234
    • Last four digits of any account or telephone number
    • First four characters of first name and first four characters of the last name for any individual
    • First four characters of any name on the business name line
    • First six characters of the street address, including spaces
    • All money amounts, including wage and income, balance due, interest and penalties

So How Do You Check Your Prior Year Tax Refund Status After Mailing Your Return To The Irs

Brace yourselves as many of you arent going to like Plan B. Youll need to call the IRS. Of course, you dont want to mail your return and call on your lunch break the following day. The IRS insists that you wait it out for at least 6 weeks after mailing your return to call and check on the status. When you call, make sure you have the following handy:

    • filing status
    • exact refund amount

You can call 1-800-829-1040 and follow the prompts for a live representative. The person that you speak with will have direct access to your tax return and be able to provide you with a status update.

Tip: Request a tracking number when mailing your return. Itll give you peace of mind to know that it arrived safe and sound.

Can I Contact The Irs For Additional Help With My Taxes

While you could try calling the IRS to check your status, the agencys live phone assistance is extremely limited. You shouldnt file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

The IRS is directing people to the Let Us Help You page on its website for more information. It also advises taxpayers to get in-person help at Taxpayer Assistance Centers. You can contact your local IRS office or call to make an appointment: 844-545-5640. You can also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service if youre eligible for assistance by calling them: 877-777-4778.

Though the chances of getting live assistance are slim, the IRS says you should only call the agency directly if its been 21 days or more since you filed your taxes online, or if the Wheres My Refund tool tells you to contact the IRS. You can call 800-829-1040 or 800-829-8374 during regular business hours.
