Once accepted, it will remain in this status until processed and released to you. However, if the IRS does reject your return, you may have to wait a little longer to receive your refund.

Tame Your Taxes: Irs Destroys 30 Million Paper Returns

Tax refund checks mailed out Monday, including first 2018 returns

Why am I not surprised to discover that the IRS destroyed 30 million unprocessed 2020 tax returns without authority? This was first brought to my attention on May 13 via an online article by Paul Bonner under the AICPAs Journal of Accountancy. Here is the topic sentence of that article. The IRS said Thursday that it destroyed approximately 30 million unprocessed information returns because its antiquated technology forced it to dispose of the paper documents and vowed to process all such information returns that it received in 2021 and 2022.

The IRS statement was in response to an audit report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration that described the document destruction. Let me connect the dots for you. Earlier in the year, the IRS Commissioner, Charles Rettig, promised that the IRS would catch up on the huge backlog that resulted from the IRS being closed down for three months in 2020 due to COVID-19. Since then, the backlog has only gotten worse. In my office, about 10% of the tax returns filed in paper format via Priority Mail still have not received their refunds, a year later!

I suspect that some of the tax returns destroyed were my clients 1040 returns.

Certainly, the paper returns could have remained wherever they were located until a software change request could be implemented. It sure seems like management at the IRS saw a chance to reduce their workload by eliminating the need to process 30 million paper returns.

The CRA offers credits to help offset medical, child care and adoption expenses as well. It also offers deductions for most retirement account contributions , charitable donations, moving expenses, union dues and professional fees, and other expenses.

In order to claim those credits and deductions, you need proof of your expenses.

    • Throughout the year, make sure that you track your expenses carefully and accurately.
    • Make notes and save your receipts, bank records and other supporting documents.
    • Use your records and receipts to calculate the amount of your claims.

But when you file your income tax return, do not include them with your return. Instead, keep them for your records. If the CRA does a pre or post assessment review on these expenses, you will need to have them available to submit as proof. Failure to submit the required documents will result in your claim for that credit or deduction being disallowed.

Having detailed records is best, as the CRA may request additional documentation. For example, if you are claiming meal expenses that occurred during travel for medical reasons, you are allowed to use the simplified deduction of $17 per meal, up to $51 per day. However, even though the CRA allows this type of claim, it still reserves the right to request additional documentation in case of an audit.
