There are a number of reasons a refund might be held back. Math errors or simple typos are often responsible. Common mistakes the IRS has flagged as leading to delays include: selecting an incorrect filing status forgetting to list all income including bank interest and unemployment compensation not answering a question on trading cryptocurrency or having a typo in your name, address, Social Security number or bank account number.

This year, the pandemic’s Economic Impact Payments also known as stimulus checks are creating an extra hurdle for taxpayers, leading to a “significantly higher error rate” on returns, according to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig.

Filers will need to correctly enter any stimulus payments they received and the numbers will need to match up with IRS records. However, “far more than 10 million” Americans have put in numbers that don’t match up, leading to delays, Rettig told Congress last week.

Other delays are due to Congress changing the tax law to allow Americans to use 2019 or 2020 income to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit. This change took place after the IRS had already updated its IT systems for the 2021 tax year, Rettig noted, meaning that taxpayers who take advantage of that law will need to have their returns manually reviewed by an IRS staffer.

Understaffing is also taking a toll, with shrinking headcount at the IRS close to levels not seen since 1974, according to Rettig.

    Tax refunds could be delayed in 2022. Here’s why

    Picking up a second job can reduce your tax refund due to the way income tax gets calculated. At the end of the year, your combined income from both jobs may put you in a higher tax bracket than counting each job separately.

    Lets look at an example. Pretend your job pays $25,000 a year. Every week your boss deducts taxes from your paycheck to cover the tax liability on that salary. Money is a little tight, though, so you pick up a second job that pays $10,000 a year. Your boss at job 2 also deducts taxes from your paycheck. Sounds good so far.

    Heres the problem. Boss number 1 is withholding taxes on your $25,000 salary. Boss number 2 is withholding taxes on your $10,00 salary. But when you combine your income from both jobs on your tax return, you actually made $35,000 total. This may put you into a higher tax bracket than either salary did when considered on its own.

    An incomplete return, an inaccurate return, an amended return, tax fraud, claiming tax credits, owing certain debts for which the government can take part or all of your refund, and sending your refund to the wrong bank due to an incorrect routing number are all reasons that a tax refund can be delayed.

    The Irs Suspects Identity Theft

    If the IRS flags a tax return for having a possible chance of identity theft, the agency will hold your refund until your identity is verified. When that occurs, you’ll likely receive a 5071C letter that provides instructions for proving your identity. If your tax return is legitimate, don’t panic — an IRS letter doesn’t mean there is proof of identity theft, merely a suspicion.

    Taxpayers can verify their identity on the IRS website, which currently requires creating an ID.me account, or by calling a dedicated phone number listed on the IRS letter. If those methods fail, you’ll need to schedule an in-person appointment at a local IRS office.

    One method for avoiding identity-theft-related delays is to create an “Identity Protection PIN” or IP-PIN. This unique six-digit ID is known only to you and the IRS and prevents anyone else from filing a return in your name. The IP PIN will only last for one year — you’ll need to create a new one next tax season if you want the same level of identity protection. You’ll need an ID.me account to create an IP PIN online, although it is possible to acquire an IP PIN using IRS Form 15227 and a telephone interview or in-person appointment.
