What If I’m Looking For Return Info From A Previous Year

How Do I Preview My Tax Return Online? – TurboTax Support Video

The Where’s My Refund tool lists the federal refund information the IRS has from the past two years. If you’re looking for return details from previous years, you’ll need to check your IRS online account.

From there, you’ll be able to see the total amount you owe, your payment history, key information about your most recent tax return, notices you’ve received from the IRS and your address on file.

How Much Interest Does The Irs Owe Me

If you filed a proper return on time and the IRS does not issue your refund within 45 days after accepting it, the agency is required to start paying interest on your refund amount.

As of July 1, the interest rate rose from 4% to 5% as a result of the Federal Reserve’s recent decision to raise the federal funds rate. If you electronically filed on time, the 45-day period started on April 18. If you filed a paper return, it began the day that the IRS marked your return as “accepted.”

Of course, any IRS interest you receive with your refund is considered taxable income.

Tracking 2021 Irs Tax Refund

The IRS says that your best bet for gauging when youll receive your 2021 refund is to go straight to Wheres My Refund? You can also use IRS2Go to pay your tax bill.

Both apps only have information on refunds for original, current year filings. Usually, refunds are issued within 21 calendar days. But you may not access information on amended or past years filings.

The most common reason youre likely not getting a return received response is that youre checking too soon. The IRS says theyll acknowledge your e-filed return within 24 hours. However, many tax preparation websites say to give it 48 to 72 hours.

Also, the 2022 tax season officially started on . If you filed before that date, you wont receive an acknowledgment that your return has been received until or later.

Refund Delays Due To Error

There was probably an error on your tax return if receiving your refund is taking longer than you think it should. that couldnt be easily cleared up. Even a small mistake can slow things down if the IRS must reach out to you for clarifying information. The IRS will never email you or phone you in this case. It will notify you and request the information by mail through the U.S. postal system.

Always double- and triple-check your tax return for mistakes if you prepare it yourself. Its especially important to make sure youve included your correct Social Security number. Make sure youve attached all necessary forms.

Make sure you check your direct deposit information and your math because many returns are delayed based on those two things. Even choosing the wrong standard deduction for your age and filing status could slow things down.

Why Haven’t I Gotten My Refund Yet

There are numerous reasons why your tax return may not have been completely processed yet, resulting in a delayed refund. Here are the most common.

  • Your return had errors or was incomplete
  • You owe the IRS money
  • Your bank account info was incorrect
  • You filed a paper return
  • You didn’t properly enter your stimulus payments
  • The IRS suspects identity theft
  • You filed an amended return
  • Your return needs further review

In testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee, IRS Commissioner Charles P. Retting said that, in 2021, the agency received “far more than 10 million returns” in which taxpayers failed to properly reconcile their stimulus payments with their recovery rebate credit, which required a manual review and resolution.

If the delay is due to a necessary tax correction made to a recovery rebate credit, earned income tax or additional child tax credit claimed on your return, the IRS will send you an explanation. If there’s a problem that needs to be fixed, the IRS will first try to proceed without contacting you. However, if it needs any more information, it will write you a letter.

If you’ve requested a paper check for your tax refund, that’ll take longer, too — about six to eight weeks, according to the IRS.

Speeding Up Your Refund

You can do a few things to try to hurry your refund along a little. The first step is to avoid filing a paper tax return. E-filing will get your refund to you more quickly and youll know that the IRS has received your return almost as soon as youve submitted it.

Another way to speed up your refund is to opt to receive it electronically. You’ll be waiting much longer if you choose to have a check mailed to you. You can have your refund deposited in up to three separate bank accounts.

You should also begin checking the IRS Refund Status page as soon as possible and check it regularly throughout the time youre waiting for your refund. You’ll see a request to call the IRS early in the process if there’s a problem, possibly letting you clear things up quickly so that your tax return can be moved to the refund processing stage.

When Will I Get The Recovery Rebate Credit

You will most likely get the Recovery Rebate Credit as part of your tax refunds. If you electronically file your tax return, you will likely receive your refund within 3 weeks. If you mail your return, it can take at least 8 weeks to receive your refund.

Claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit will not delay your tax refund. However, if you dont claim the correct amount of the Recovery Rebate Credit, your refund may be delayed while the IRS corrects the error on your return. The IRS will send you a notice of any changes made to your return.

You can check on the status of your refund using the IRS Check My Refund Status tool.

Tracking Prior Years And Amended Returns

The status of your e-filed state return is not on the IRS apps. If you used tax preparation software, you should be able to log in to your account and get the status of your state tax return.

You can also go to your states website to get this information. Many have automated systems like the IRSs. A few still publish phone numbers for you to call.

Returns filed for past tax years cant be tracked by these methods. These returns usually have to be mailed to the IRS, so theres no electronic record of them. The quickest way to know that the IRS received your mailed tax return is to send it by certified mail with a return receipt.

The return receipt is a postcard that you address to yourself. You get it back with the signature of the person who accepted your return on it. The IRS usually rubber stamps it, but this signature is no less valid. It proves they received your return.

Amended returns usually have to be mailed, too. Again, certified mail will give you the quickest confirmation that the IRS received it. They do have an online tool called Wheres My Amended Return? However, the IRS recommends waiting three weeks from when you mailed your amended return to start using it. Youll need your Social Security number, date of birth and ZIP code.

Why Do I See A Tax Topic 151 Tax Topic 152 Or Irs Error Message

H& R Block Vs. TurboTax Which Is Better For Filing Taxes?

Although the Where’s My Refund tool typically shows a status of Received, Approved or Sent, there are a variety of other messages some users may see.

One of the most common is Tax Topic 152, indicating you’re likely getting a refund but it hasn’t been approved or sent yet. The notice simply links out to an informational topic page on the IRS FAQ website explaining the types and timing of tax refunds.

The delay could be an automated message for taxpayers claiming the child tax credit or earned income tax credit sent because of additional fraud protection steps.

Tax Topic 151 means your tax return is now under review by the IRS. The agency either needs to verify certain credits or dependents, or it has determined that your tax refund will be reduced to pay money that it believes you owe. You’ll need to wait about four weeks to receive a notice from the IRS explaining what you need to do to resolve the status.

There are other IRS refund codes that a small percentage of tax filers receive, indicating freezes, math errors on tax returns or undelivered checks. The College Investor offers a list of IRS refund reference codes and errors and their meaning.

How To Know Your Electronically Filed Income Tax Return Was Really Filed

I think it is a good thing that people tend to be loyal to their tax preparers. Reilly’s Second Law Of Tax Practice, as modified for family audiences, is ” When the prospect tells you his last two accountants were jerks, it won’t be long before you are the next jerk.” Like anything else, that loyalty can be excessive. That is one of the lessons in a recent Tax Court decision Carolyn F. Whitsett v CIR. You will have to read on or skip to the end for the other lesson.

A Name Has Been Changed

The tax preparer is named in the case, but I feel bad for the fellow, so I will just refer to him as James, my mythical friend whose public accounting career is something of a parody of my own. You can’t rule out that there is something off about the Tax Court’s narrative, which makes old James out to be pretty inept. Dr. Whitsett, on the other hand, is viewed quite favorably by the Tax Court and, accepting the Tax Court narrative, it seems really odd that the IRS was litigating about the accuracy penalty in her case.

It Starts With Good News

James Starts To Lose It

TPG, either out of consideration for the sellers or for its own purposes, structured the deal to push the realization event into 2012. There was however some ambiguity in the documentation:

It Gets Worse

As it turned out, at least as far as the IRS was concerned, the gain had not been reported in 2011, because no return had been filed for 2011.

Refund Delays Due To Fraud

Fraudulent activity connected with your Social Security number can also cause a delay in processing. You likely wont even be aware of this until you file.

Fraudulent tax activity occurs when someone uses your Social Security number to file a return and get a refund. The agency will know that something is afoot when you try to file your own return and they already have one filed on your behalf.
