Can I Use Cash App For My Tax Return

Don't Miss

Will Venmo Cash App And Zelle Users Have To Pay A New Tax

ð´NEW TAX LAW REQUIRES CASH APPS REPORT TRANSACTIONS OF $600 TO THE IRS |VENMO PAYPAL ZELLE APPLE PAY

For Venmo, Cash App and other users, this may sound like a new taxbut its merely a tax reporting change to the existing tax law.

Form 1099-K is a tax form sent to users that may include both taxable and nontaxable income sources. A taxable source of income is included in your income, such as wages, rents, tips, and retirement income. Whereas a nontaxable source is excluded from your income and you will not need to report on your tax return.

Some examples of nontaxable income are:

  • Money received from a friend as a reimbursement
  • Money received from a roommate to pay their share of the rent
  • Money received from a loved one as a gift

Also, if you receive money from selling a personal item at a loss, you are not required to report the amount on your tax return. For example, if you purchased a dress for $100 and sold it for $50, the amount is not taxable.

But while the new law does not create a new tax, you must keep good records of any taxable income received.

Changes On The Way For Those Who Transfer Money On Their Phones

    — New changes in the new year could have a huge impact for people who transfer money on their phones.

For example, those who use apps like Venmo, PayPal and Cash App.

I use Venmo and Cash App, said Luke Bowerman.

Like millions of Americans, young and old, Bowerman transfers money on his phone.

New changes in the new year could have a huge impact for people who transfer money on their phones.

I would say between going in and out, about $100 a month, he said. The main thing I use it for is if I go out to a restaurant for splitting the bill.

Under the American Rescue Plan Act, next year, transactions totaling $600 or more could have someone like Bowerman getting a 1099-K form.

Its a drastic shift from requirements in years past where anyone cycling $20,000 or 200 transactions annually would need to report it.

I feel like $600 is a very consumer amount, Bowerman said.

So, why is this happening? Tax Clinic Director Sara Spodick, from Quinnipiacs School of Law, explains.

Theres really a huge drive to close the tax gap, and that is considered to be transactions that happen between individuals and also in the gig economy, Spodick said.

She added that the intention was to target those with side hustles.

These individuals are mostly cash or receiving payments on these peer-to-peer transactions, and they werent including it in their gross income, Spodick said.

So, enter this new reporting rule.

Expanded Penalty Waiver Available If 2018 Tax Withholding And Estimated Tax Payments Fell Short Refund Available For Those Who Already Paid 2018 Underpayment Penalty

The IRS lowered to 80 percent the threshold required for certain taxpayers to qualify for estimated tax penalty relief if their federal income tax withholding and estimated tax payments fell short of their total tax liability in 2018. In general, taxpayers must pay at least 90 percent of their tax bill during the year to avoid an underpayment penalty when they file. On January 16, 2019, the IRS lowered the underpayment threshold to 85 percent and on March 22, 2019, the IRS lowered it to 80 percent for tax year 2018.

This additional expanded penalty relief for tax year 2018 means that the IRS is waiving the estimated tax penalty for any taxpayer who paid at least 80 percent of their total tax liability during the year through federal income tax withholding, quarterly estimated tax payments or a combination of the two.

Taxpayers who have not filed yet should file electronically. The tax software was updated and uses the new underpayment threshold and will determine the amount of taxes owed and any penalties or waivers that apply. This penalty relief is also included in the revision of the instructions for Form 2210, Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals, Estates, and Trusts.

Cash App Is A Must The Best App To Have

I love this app! I have 4 kids and they borrow and pay me back. I sell a lot of items and use it for taking payments from my renters. It can categorize each person and the payments Ive made to them & the payments I have received from them. I can pull up one person & look at the entire account. It allows you to state what the money is for so u can keep track of it. PayPal which is not free! I do not use now. I have Zelle, however, it does not keep track of how much Is paid or received. You can not pull up an individual to see all the transactions for the one person. Which is what I love about the cash app! I was able to keep track of how much I paid for my daughters wedding. Her dress, shoes, veil, hair, nails, and all the decorations. I was able to keep track of how much I spent. I could pull her name up and look at everything that I had spent on her and her wedding. I love that it is free!! No fees! I have my renters pay me using the cash app. Its easy to track who has paid and how much to date! When Im selling something and they want to use the cash app to pay me. I can send them a link and I make money because I sent them the link so when they download the cash app and pay for items that I have for sale, cash app sends me a bonus! It stated out at $5. I am now up to $15 per person that uses my link to the cash app. Thats awesome! I love that bonus!

TaxSlayer app review: easily estimate your 2013 tax refund ...

You can get your tax refund with a direct deposit or with a prepaid card. The tax refund direct deposit is amazing as you can sit back and receive your refund credited to your checking account in around two weeks.

Its way better than waiting for roughly six to eight weeks and it takes for a paper check refund to arrive and deposit it.

Nonetheless, you avoid the hassle of toting to your bank to deposit the check and the worry of not making it to your mailbox safely and securely.

Even if you have a traditional bank account, i would recommend Cash App to get the refund deposit. Cash App also allows you to deposit their COVID-19 stimulation payments for faster and even easier access to your funds.

How To Keep Good Records For Tax Reporting

Since your Form 1099-K may include both taxable and nontaxable income, keeping good records is essential. You want to select a recordkeeping system that clearly reflects your income.

You should maintain records such as bank statements, receipts, invoices and other financial documents to reflect taxable income. You can consider saving your records either in electronic form or manually.

If you are a business owner, it is a good idea to set up a third-party network platform, such as Cash App, Zelle, or Venmo, separately for both your business and personal transactions. This way, you can easily track business transactions.

Also, keeping good records can be beneficial to prove both taxable and nontaxable income sources if the IRS audits your tax return.
