Dont Put It On A Credit Card

Having a tax liability can add pressure on your finances, but dont put it on your credit card, Rus Garofalo, founder of Brass Taxes previously told Yahoo Money.

With the Federal Reserve set to increase its benchmark interest rate up to six times this year, the rate on your credit card will also increase.

According to Garofalo, you should pay off your state debt first as these carry higher interest rates than the federal government. Depending on the year, your federal debt can have an interest rate ranging from 3% to 5%, which is often much lower than state interest rates.

For the federal government debt, I like to tell people to see it as a nice credit card with a low interest rate. Theyll give you up to six years to pay off your taxes, as long as you dont ignore them for a long time, Garofalo said. They wont do anything, they just want to get paid, and they are very understaffed, so they dont want to chase you around.

    Interest On Government Debt

How Do I Figure Out My Pay After Taxes

Lets just say that Uncle Sam is not exactly working the Baby Steps. The U.S. government is currently more than $28 trillion in debtand countingwith a small percentage of your tax dollars going toward paying the interest on that debt.3

The interest on the national debt, which must be paid by the federal government each year, changes based on two factorsthe size of the debt itself and rising and falling interest rates. And since both the national debt and the interest rates on that debt are expected to increase over the next decade, so will the size of our nations interest paymentswhich means more of our taxpayer dollars might be used to make those payments.4

Maybe its time to finally get Washington on the debt snowball . . .

    Set Up A Payment Plan

The IRS offers payment plans if you can’t pay all or even anything you owe right away. The important thing is that you don’t ignore your plight, hoping that it will go away, because it won’t.

You can set up a monthly installment agreement with the IRS, allowing you to pay what you owe over time. You can even decide how much you want to pay per month, at least to some extent. The entire balance has to be paid off within 72 months, so your minimum payment would be what you owe divided by 72. Leave some room for interest and penalties when you’re making your calculations.

You’re not prohibited from paying more than the amount you’ve committed to in any month, and you can retire the debt sooner and minimize interest charges by doing so.

The IRS will still charge the late-payment penalty as well as interest, and there’s a one-time processing fee to set up the plan$149 as of 2021. But if you apply for the installment agreement online, and if you agree to have the monthly amount taken from your bank account by direct debit, this one-time processing fee drops to $31. Direct debit is required if you owe more than $25,000.

You don’t have to qualify for the installment agreement by submitting a collection information statement to prove your assets and income, at least not if you owe less than $50,000. You can apply online using the Online Payment Agreement Application on the IRS website.

Heres How People Can Pay Their Federal Taxes

    IRS Tax Tip 2021-50, April 14, 2021

The May 17 deadline for individuals to file and pay their federal income tax is fast approaching. While paying taxes is not optional, people do have options when it comes to how they pay taxes. The IRS offers a variety of ways to pay taxes.

Some taxpayers must make quarterly estimated tax payments throughout the year. This includes sole proprietors, partners, and S corporation shareholders who expect to owe $1,000 or more when they file. Individuals who participate in the gig economy might also have to make estimated payments. The deadline to pay estimated taxes remains April 15, 2021.

    Temporarily Delay The Collection Process

You may need this type of agreement in the event that you can’t pay your full tax liability in the foreseeable future . If you can’t pay any of your tax debt, then your account could be classified as “currently not collectible.” The IRS could then approve and temporarily delay collection until your financial condition improves.

Being currently not collectible doesn’t mean the debt goes away it means the IRS has determined you can’t afford to pay the debt at this time. Prior to approving your request to delay collection, you may be asked to complete a Collection Information Statement and provide proof of your financial status, including information about your assets, monthly income, and expenses.
