Who Has To File

Tax Filing Deadline 2021: May 17, does not apply to estimated tax payments, those are due April 15

Unless it is exempt, a corporation is required to file an Alberta corporate income tax return if it had a permanent establishment in Alberta at any time during the taxation year.

To determine if your corporation is exempt, complete the Exemption Criteria section in AT100, Preparing and Filing the Alberta Corporate Income Tax Return.

Additional information on who is not required to file, who is exempt and the definition of a permanent establishment are outlined in Information Circular CT-2, Filing Requirements.

Income Tax Deadline Extension

The individual income tax payment and filing deadline has been extended by 32 days to May 17, 2021, without penalties and interest, regardless of the amount owed. This extension will be similar to the Internal Revenue Service extension.

Individuals will have the option to pay any 2020 income tax payments that would normally be due on April 15, 2021, by May 17, 2021, without penalty or interest. This extension applies to money owed by individual taxpayers only for the 2020 income tax year.

Individual taxpayers do not need to file any forms or call the Colorado Department of Revenue to qualify for this automatic state tax payment relief. Individual taxpayers who need additional time to file beyond the May 17 deadline are automatically granted a filing extension until Oct. 15, but that does not grant an extension of time to pay taxes due. Individual taxpayers should pay their state income tax due by May 17, 2021, to avoid interest and penalties.

Individuals that received unemployment benefits in 2020 and already filed their federal return should continue to monitor guidance from the IRS in the coming days with the recent passage of the American Rescue Plan.

If You Miss The Tax Filing Deadline And Are Owed A Refund

If you overpaid for the 2020 tax year, there’s typically no penalty for filing your tax return late. However, you should file as soon as possible.

Generally, you have three years from the tax return due date to claim a tax refund. That means for 2020 tax returns, the window closes in 2024. After three years, unclaimed tax refunds typically become the property of the U.S. Treasury.

Will The Tax Deadline Be Extended Again

SA tax payments due again

That remains to be seen. The IRS had no plans to extend the tax-filing deadline for the 2020 tax year, but it later changed course and pushed the standard April 15 deadline to May 17, 2021. The agency also delayed Tax Day the year prior in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the state of the pandemic remains in flux, the IRS has so far given no indication that it will postpone the tax-filing deadline for the third year in a row. In addition, given the rules changes going into effect in 2022 – as well as potentially complicating factors, like this year’s expanded child tax credit payments and repayment of deferred Social Security taxes, taxpayers have even more incentive to get a head start on their 2021 returns.

When Are Taxes Due In Your State

Be sure to find out when your local Tax Day is. Most taxpayers face state income taxes, and most of the states that have an income tax follow the federal tax deadline. Ask your state’s tax department: When are taxes due?

Yes. For 2021, Tax Day was originally April 15, but as part of the government’s ongoing coronavirus response, Tax Day was moved to May 17.

No. The tax deadline in 2021 is May 17. If you need to make an estimated tax payment for the first quarter, that payment was due on April 15, though.

If you request a tax extension by May 17, you can have until October 15 to file your taxes.

  • However, getting a tax extension only gives you more time to file the paperwork it does not give you more time to pay.

  • If you can’t pay your tax bill when it’s due, the IRS offers installment plans that will let you pay over time. You can apply for one on the IRS website.

IRS Reminder: Q3 Estimated Tax Payments Due Sept. 15

The Ozark County Collectors website, www.ozarkcountycollector.com, allows tax payers to complete online payments with an e-check option, which uses checking account and bank routing number, or with debit or credit cards.

Ozark County Collector Darla Sullivan says the countys annual tax statements have been mailed to most area residents, with the exception of a few statements that are being held back pending the transfer of ownership of property. The delay is due to an unusually high volume of real estate sales that occurred in the county from September through early October this year, Sullivan said.

The deadline to pay 2021 taxes without penalty is Friday, Dec. 31. Mailed payments that are postmarked by Dec. 31 are also accepted. All changes or discrepancies in tax bills must be made through the assessors office by Dec. 30, Sullivan said.

Echeck payments online are quick and easy

The collectors website, www.ozarkcountycollector.com, is a quick and efficient way to pay taxes at the residents convenience, she said. Payments can be made there by electronic check or with a credit or debit card.

The most economical way to pay through the website is to use the echeck feature, which incurs a $1.75 charge. To use an echeck, residents input their checking account number and bank routing number, which are printed at the bottom of any personal checks.

The Due Date For Opting Out Of The December 15 Monthly Child Credit Payments Is Almost Here Missing The Deadline Could Cost You In The Long Run

The next batch of child tax credit payments is scheduled for December 15. That will be the sixth and final monthly payment this year. However, for some families, the monthly payments aren’t needed and, in certain situations, might actually trigger a financial hit down the road . That’s why the tax law permits parents who don’t want or need the money now to opt-out of the monthly child tax credit payments altogether.

If you want to opt-out, use the IRS’s online Child Tax Credit Update Portal to unenroll from monthly payments. However, there are deadlines each month if you want to opt-out before the next payment arrives. Generally, you need to unenroll by at least three days before the first Thursday of the month in which the next payment is scheduled to arrive . That means you need to opt-out by November 29 if you don’t want to receive the December 15 payment.

For married couples who file a joint tax return, both spouses must opt-out if you want to completely shut down your monthly child tax credit payments. If only one spouse opts out, you’ll still get half of the joint payment you’re scheduled to receive.

Contributions to a traditional 401 reduce your total taxable income for the year.

For example, lets say you make $65,000 a year and put $19,500 into your 401. Instead of paying income taxes on the entire $65,000 you earned, youll only owe on $45,500 of your salary.
