People Have Lots Of Questions About The $3000 Or $3600 Child Tax Credit And The Advance Payments That The Irs Is Sending Monthly To Most Families And We Have Answers

The child tax credit is bigger and better than ever for 2021. The credit amount is significantly increased for one year, and the IRS is making monthly advance payments to qualifying families from July through December.

But the changes are complicated and won’t help everyone. For instance, there are now two ways in which the credit can be reduced for upper-income families. That means some parents won’t qualify for a larger credit and, as before, some won’t receive any credit at all. More children will qualify for the credit in 2021.And, next year, when you file your 2021 tax return, you will have to reconcile the advance payments you received with the actual child tax credit you are entitled to.

It’s all enough to make your head spin. But don’t worry we have answers to a lot of the questions parents are asking right now about the 2021 child credit. We also have a handy 2021 Child Tax Credit Calculator that lets you estimate the amount of your credit and the expected advance payments. Once you read through the FAQs below and try out the calculator, you should feel more at ease about the 2021 credit.

Question: What were the rules for the 2020 child tax credit?

Up to $1,400 of the child credit is refundable for some lower-income individuals with children. However, you must also have at least $2,500 of earned income to get a refund.

Question: What changes did Congress make to the child tax credit?

Some Call Tax Season A ‘big Mess’

The IRS had received 100.9 million returns through April 9, down 3% from the year-ago timeframe. It processed 91.15 million individual tax returns through April 9, down 6.8% from a year ago.

At the same time, roughly 9.5 million fewer federal income tax refunds were issued through April 9 a 12.3% decline compared with the same time last year, according to IRS statistics. Through April 9, the agency hadissued 67.7 million income tax refunds averaging $2,888.

Real-life challenges at the IRS include dealing with a COVID-19 related backlog of returns from 2019.

As of April 9, the IRS said it had yet to complete 1.5 million individual tax returns received last year but the IRS said those returns are in the processing pipeline.

“We are processing returns received over the summer and fall in 2020 due to the extended July 15, 2020, tax filing due date,” the IRS said.

IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig, who spoke before the Senate Finance Committee on April 13, said the 2021 tax filing season “continues to go smoothly.”

Not everyone agrees.

“It’s a big mess,” said Antonio Brown, a CPA in Flint, Michigan.

As of mid-April, Brown said he had about 15 clients who continued to wait for their refunds.

“They’ve been contacting me almost weekly,” Brown said. “And every time I check the IRS website, it says that the refund is being processed and the refund date has yet to be determined.”

They’re “the very ones that need the refunds to help through these tough times,” Brown said.

How Do I Get The 2021 Child Tax Credit And Get Advance Payments

You dont need to do anything to get the advance payments if you:

  • Filed a tax return for tax year 2019 or 2020. Your tax return is used to determine eligibility for advance payments even if you didnt claim the CTC on your tax return.
  • Successfully submitted your information using the 2020 IRS Non-Filers tool .

The IRS started sending notices about eligibility for the advance CTC payments in June. The IRS will automatically send your monthly advance payments for each qualifying child from July 15, 2021 to December 15, 2021.

If you dont fall into the above categories, you have two options to get the advance payments:

  • If you arent normally required to file taxes, you can use the new IRS Non-filer Portal to submit a simplified tax return. Youll be able to enter your information, including the number and ages of your qualifying children to receive advance payments this year.
Filing Status
Qualifying Widow with Dependent Child $24,800 $26,100
  • If youre required to file taxes, you need to file a 2020 tax return to receive advance payments of the new credit this year.

If you earned any income, we recommend filing taxes whether or not you have a filing requirement, as you may be eligible for other valuable tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, which can give you more money back in your tax refund.

The new CTC is for your 2021 tax return . The advance payments will give you half of your CTC amount in 2021. You will have to file a tax return in 2022 to get the rest.

Gather And Organize Tax Records

Organized tax records make preparing a complete and accurate tax return easier. It helps avoid errors that lead to processing and refund delays. Individuals should have all their tax information available before filing to ensure the return is complete and accurate. They should notify the IRS if their address changes and notify the Social Security Administration of a legal name change.

Remember, most income is taxable. Recordkeeping for individuals includes:

Income documents can help individuals determine if they’re eligible for deductions or credits. Additionally, people who need to reconcile their advance payments of the Child Tax Credit and Premium Tax Credit will need their related 2021 information. Those who received third Economic Impact Payments and think they qualify for an additional amount will need their stimulus payment and plus-up amounts to figure and claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit.

When Will I Get My Tax Refund

The Wheres My Refund? tool lets you check the status of your refund through the IRS website or the IRS2Go mobile app. If you submit your tax return electronically, you can check the status of your refund within 24 hours. But if you mail your tax return, youll need to wait at least four weeks before you can receive any information about your tax refund. Keep in mind that usually you can file your taxes in January.

    Calculating Income Tax Rate

The United States has a progressive income tax system. This means there are higher tax rates for higher income levels. These are called marginal tax rates,” meaning they do not apply to total income, but only to the income within a specific range. These ranges are called brackets.

Income falling within a specific bracket is taxed at the rate for that bracket. The table below shows the tax brackets for the federal income tax, and it reflects the rates for the 2020 tax year, which are the taxes due in early 2021.

Prince Edward Island Sales Tax Credit

This credit is a non-taxable amount paid to help offset the increase in the sales tax for households with low and modest incomes.

The program provides an annual credit of $110 for an individual plus, if applicable, $55 for a spouse, common-law partner or an eligible dependant. There is also a supplement of 0.5% of adjusted family net income over $30,000, up to a maximum of $55. The total of the above is reduced by 2% of adjusted family net income over $50,000.

This amount is combined with the quarterly payments of the federal GST/HST credit.

The Prince Edward Island sales tax credit is fully funded by the Province of Prince Edward Island.

How To Track Your Federal Tax Refund If It Hasn’t Arrived Yet

If you just filed recently, you should know your federal tax refund check could take up to 120 days to arrive. Here’s what else we found.

If you see “IRS TREAS 310” on your bank statement, it could be your income tax refund.

Whether you’ve already filed your taxes or you’re planning to do so by the final due date — that’s Oct. 15 if you file a tax extension — you’ll need to know how to track your refund. Be aware that the IRS is still facing a backlog of unprocessed individual returns, 2020 returns with errors and amended returns that require corrections or special handling. And while refunds typically take around 21 days to process, the IRS says delays could be up to 120 days.

The tax agency is also juggling stimulus checks, child tax credit payment problems and refunds for tax overpayment on unemployment benefits. The money could give families some financial relief but an overdue tax refund could also be a big help. If you don’t file your 2020 tax return soon, you’ll likely owe late fees or more interest — and you could be missing out on your tax refund, stimulus checks or child tax credit payments, which you may only be eligible for with your 2020 tax return.

Half of the total is being paid as six monthly payments and half as a 2021 tax credit. So each month through December parents of a younger child are receiving $300, and parents of an older child are receiving $250. The IRS has also made a one-time payment of $500 for dependents age 18 or full-time college students up through age 24.
