Expect delays in tax refunds when filing 2021 tax returns

If you receive your tax refund by direct deposit, you may see IRS TREAS 310 listed for the transaction. The 310 code simply identifies the transaction as a refund from a filed tax return in the form of an electronic payment . You may also see TAX REF in the description field for a refund.

If you see a 449 instead of 310, it means your refund has been offset for delinquent debt.

Getting Refunds Within 21 Days Of Filing

If all goes well, though, taxpayers who e-file can receive their refunds via direct deposit as quickly as one week after filing based on previous years’ processing time, according to trade publication CPA Advisor.

It’s important to note that processing time typically slows down as the tax season gets underway and the IRS handles more returns, the publication added.

In the meantime, tax experts say there are some steps that taxpayers can take to help ensure a quick tax refund, which is even more important this year given that the IRS is starting with a backlog. National Taxpayer Advocate Erin M. Collins issued a report to Congress in January that warned she is “deeply concerned about the upcoming filing season” given the backlog, among other issues.

“The first thing you know if you are going to cook a meal, you have to have the kitchen cleaned up from the last meal,” said Mark W. Everson, vice chairman at Alliantgroup and former Commissioner of the IRS. “It just snowballs into a terrible situation.”

Delays in processing tax returns count as one of the agency’s most pressing problems, Collins said in her report, which described an agency in crisis.

Americans are hearing the message: Potential IRS processing delays ranked second among the three top concerns of people who are expecting a refund from the IRS this year, according to a Bankrate.com poll of almost 2,500 people released February 22.

When To Expect A Tax Refund To Arrive

Though theres a notice on the IRS advice website that states that theyre having some staffing issues, so processing paper tax returns could take several weeks longer. Taxpayers and tax professionals are encouraged to file electronically.

When and how you file your tax return will also affect the timeline for the rebate, as well as the waht the refund will be sent to you. With the above caveat in mind, here are some possible timelines for when you can expect to see your money returned to you.

How Long Does It Take For The Irs To Send Tax Refunds

The IRS usually issues tax refunds within three weeks, but some taxpayers could have to wait a while longer to receive their payments. If there are any errors in your tax return, the wait could be lengthy.

When an issue delays your return, its resolution “depends on how quickly and accurately you respond, and the ability of IRS staff trained and working under social distancing requirements to complete the processing of your return,” according to the IRS website.

The date you receive your tax refund also depends on the method you used to file your return. If you submitted a tax return by mail, the IRS says it could take six to eight weeks for your tax refund to arrive once it’s been processed.

If your tax refund goes into your bank account via direct deposit, it could take an additional five days for your bank to post the money to your account. This means if it takes the IRS the full 21 days to issue your check and your bank five days to post it, you could be waiting a total of 26 days to get your tax refund. Online services like Venmo and Cash App can deliver your tax refund a few days sooner, since there’s no waiting period for the direct deposit.

Convert Your Tax Refund Into Your Emergency Fund

When To Expect My Tax Refund? The 2021 Refund Calendar ...

One of the most important defenses you have against unexpected expenses or the loss of income is a cushy emergency fund. Most financial planners advise their clients to build an emergency fund of more than or, at least, equal to a full three to six months worth of living expenses. This includes money for the mortgage or rent, groceries, gas, insurance payments and other daily living expenses.

Unfortunately, a staggering 25% of Americans have nothing saved at all. An emergency fund will help you make it if you experience a personal, medical or financial catastrophe. So, while it may be tempting to use that nearly three grand as a down payment on a new car, you will be much better off in the long run if you use that money to create a financial cushion in the event of being laid off from your job, not being able to work because of medical reasons or if something catastrophic happens, like losing your home to a fire or a flood. Three grand isnt three to six months worth of expenses, but its a great start.

How To Check On Your State Tax Refund

Each state uses a slightly different system to let taxpayers check their tax refund status. In general though, there are two pieces of information that you will need in order to check on your refund.

The first important information is your Social Security number . If you do not have a SSN, most states allow you to use a few different types of ID. One common type is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number . If you file a joint return, use whichever ID number appears first on the return.

Almost all states will also require you to provide the amount of your refund. Most states ask you to round your return to the nearest whole number but some states, like Vermont, will ask for the exact amount of your refund.

These two things will be enough for you to check in some states. Other states may also require your date of birth, the year of the return, your filing status or your zip code. Below is a run down of how you can check your refund status in each state that collects an income tax.

Note that Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming have no state income tax. New Hampshire and Tennessee do not tax regular wages and income. Tennessee has phased out tax on income from dividends and investments and New Hampshire has proposed legislation to do the same.
