However, there have been changes to several major tax credits and deductions.

This means there is a chance you will not see the same tax refund that you got last year.

But, it is important to read up on these changes and see how they affect you and your loved ones.

We explain how to earn up to $10,000s extra in 2021 without paying federal tax.

Million People Who Dont Normally File Taxes This Year Will Most Likely Have To File In Order To Get Their Money From The Stimulus Checks

You may need to file a tax return in 2021 regardless if you would otherwise need to, in order to claim missing stimulus money, if you fall into one of the following categories: you don’t usually file taxes because youre part of the SSI or SSDI programs, you’re retired or you don’t meet the IRS’ income threshold. However you dont want to miss the filing deadline which is 15 April once again this year.

When the CARES Act was passed in the spring of 2020 the IRS and Treasury Department were tasked with sending out the payments to eligible Americans. In order to do that the IRS used the information they had on hand, individuals and households tax return filings from either 2018 0r 2019. This left out around 8 million non-filers who will now most likely need to file an income-tax filing for 2020 to receive their Economic Impact Payments , or better known as stimulus checks.

Will I Still Need To File State Taxes By April 15

Yes. The extended deadline is only for federal income taxes. It doesnt affect a states income tax deadline. But last year, states also eventually pushed back their deadlines after Tax Day 2020 was extended to July 15 due to the pandemic.

Earlier this month, Maryland pushed its state income tax filing deadline to July 15, according to Comptroller Peter Franchot.

Its important that taxpayers check their state to see if they are moving their deadline.

The delay shouldnt make much difference for some filers whose refunds are delayed every year, Holtzblatt says. Taxpayers who are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Additional Child Tax Credit traditionally face a refund delay when filing early. Under the PATH Act from 2015, the IRS cannot issue refunds on returns claiming these credits until Feb. 15 in order to prevent identity fraud and fraudulent claims.

Even with the delayed start of tax season, the IRS says these claimants should receive refunds in early March, the same timeline as they would in a traditional filing season.

Yes, people who need the money wont be receiving it until perhaps late February or early March, Holtzblatt says. But for those people who probably need it the most, their income puts them in the range of the EITC in many cases, and their payments will get to them at about the same time as it normally would.

Will There Be Income Restrictions

Yes. Your adjusted gross income will be used to determine whether you qualify, and if so, how much you will get.

  • If your AGI for 2019 or 2020 is $75,000 , then you will get the full amount. For AGIs above those amounts, your payment will be reduced proportionately until it reaches zero at $80,000 and $160,000, respectively.
  • For Heads of Households, the amounts will be $112,500 and $120,000.

How To Secure A Timely Refund

Delaying the traditional start of tax season may help reduce confusion among taxpayers who havent received stimulus payments they are eligible for, but it also means a longer wait for Americans who rely on annual tax refund payments and file early in the season, or who wont receive any stimulus until filing their returns.

The IRS says nine out of 10 taxpayers will receive their refund within 21 days of filing if they do so electronically using direct deposit and there are no issues with the return.

Thats three weeks that people are out that money, says Dan Herron, CPA, founder of Elemental Wealth Advisors in San Luis Obispo, California. But many who rely on an annual refund check, need that money because they bank on that to pay for medical expenses, or major purchases, or just surviving at this point. Thats frustrating.

Despite the late start, there are a few ways to ensure you receive your tax refund, including any stimulus payment youre eligible for using the Recovery Rebate Credit, as quickly as possible.

Stimulus Check: Here’s How You Can Still Get Money

how to get stimulus check without filing taxes(if you did not file taxes in, non filer irs)2020

The official 2020 income-tax-filing deadline has passed, but it’s not too late to claim missing stimulus check money if you’re still owed a relief payment: Simply file your return anyway.

The Treasury Department has already largely distributed stimulus check 3 the $1,400 direct payment provided by the Biden administration’s American Rescue Plan totaling more than $388 billion in relief to approximately 165 million individuals and families.

Many Americans are still receiving so-called “plus-up” payments, which are supplemental funds for those who got their third stimulus check earlier this spring but who then qualified for more money based on their 2020 income. These are being distributed automatically as returns are processed.

The IRS is also sending checks to eligible individuals who previously didn’t have tax information on file as soon as the IRS processes their returns. This includes people who don’t have a permanent address or who have very little or no income.

But there are some people who may still be able to get more stimulus relief: Individuals who made less in 2020 than they did in 2019 are able to claim additional funds from stimulus checks 1 and 2, which totaled $1,200 and $600, respectively, using the Recovery Rebate Credit on Line 30 of Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR.

Bottom line: If you’re still owed some stimulus relief, get your return in or amend what you’ve already submitted.

Nonfilers Are Likely Eligible To Get Both Of The 2020 Stimulus Checks

Most nonfilers fall below the income limits stipulated by each stimulus package and would be eligible for the full amount in each round — $1,200 per person under the 2020 CARES Act passed in March 2020, and $600 per person under the December 2020 stimulus bill. Find the full eligibility rules for each stimulus check here.

If you receive SSI or SSDI, you should have received at least a portion of both of those stimulus checks automatically — the IRS obtained the names of Social Security recipients and SSI beneficiaries from the Social Security Administration in the spring and made the payments to them automatically, according to Janet Holtzblatt, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.

If either of your checks are missing, however, you’ll have to take the extra steps below.

The IRS started processing tax returns on Feb. 12. The federal tax return deadline was extended to May 17.

Could My 2019 Tax Returns Help Get My Missing Stimulus Payment Any Quicker

Depending on your personal tax situation, the Recovery Rebate Credit for your missing stimulus money would either reduce the total amount you owe to the IRS or give you a larger tax refund.

If the IRS has your direct deposit information from a previous federal tax return, the agency will attempt to deposit your check in the bank account you provided. If you receive your tax refund by check in the mail, however, or if the IRS info or your bank information is out of date, the agency will send your refund in the mail. The IRS didnt accept direct deposit information for the $600 check, but you should consider registering a new direct deposit account with your 2020 tax filing.

Will I Owe Taxes On Stimulus Checks

Stimulus check update: Where is my payment? Heres how to ...

No, stimulus checks aren’t considered income by the IRS. They are prepaid tax credits for your 2020 tax return, authorized by two relief bills passed last year that aimed at stabilizing the struggling U.S. economy in the wake of the pandemic. Because the stimulus payments arent considered income by the tax agency, it wont impact your refund by increasing your adjusted gross income or putting you in a higher tax bracket, for instance.

When it comes to getting paperwork ready, you’ll want to dig up the IRS Notice 1444 for the stimulus payment amount you were issued in 2020. And the second round of payments would be outlined in Notice 1444-B.

Whether that extra step is required, and how you provide the necessary information, depends on your unique situation. If, for instance, you’re currently receiving Social Security or other government benefits, you might not have to do anything to receive a check. Other non-filers can choose between different methods of supplying the required information. Read on to find out how traditional non-filers can make sure they receive a stimulus check.

These payments will be sent automatically–you don’t have to do anything. The IRS will get the information it needs from the Social Security Administration, Railroad Retirement Board, or Veterans Administration if it doesn’t already have a 2018 or 2019 tax return with your name on it.
