What Does The New California Law Mean For Rideshare Drivers

With the passing of Proposition 22, drivers for rideshare companies like Uber, Lyft, Doordash, Postmates, and others, will remain classified as independent contractors. Prop 22 also opens the door to added benefits such as a flexible schedule, guaranteed minimum earnings, healthcare and additional insurance coverage, including medical and disability.

What If I Sell Personal Property Like A Couch For $600 Or More But It Was Less Than Its Original Value

According to PayPal, while banks and payment service providers, like PayPal and Venmo are required by the IRS to send customers a Form-1099K if they meet the $600 threshold amount, there are certain amounts that may be included on the form that are generally excluded from gross income and therefore are not subject to income tax. This includes:

  • Amounts from selling personal items at a loss

  • Amounts sent as reimbursement

  • Amounts sent as a gift

So, for example, if you purchased a couch for $1,200 and sold it for $800, this amount would not be subject to income tax. Sellers are encouraged to speak with a tax professional when reviewing their 1099-Ks to determine whether specific amounts are classified as taxable income.

How To Get A Irs Form 1099

The IRS set up federal laws that require PayPal to send you a 1099-K to help track down eBay sellers who donât report their profits. This means that taxpayers who have a credit card merchant account such as PayPal or similar service will receive a 1099-K in most cases.

PayPal is required to send the IRS form 1099-K by January 31st for managed payments from the previous calendar year.

If you donât want to wait for your form to arrive, you can read it online by logging into your PayPal account. If you donât see your 1099 form, then donât make the mistake of thinking you donât owe taxes. Many small business owners in the eBay community fall into this trap. PayPal reports your 1099-K to the IRS. Before they know it, they are issuing them a bill for the gross amount plus interest.

Call PayPal to confirm if your tax form is coming or not. I also suggest that you contact eBayâs customer service just to be sure.

A 1099 form reports certain types of income that a taxpayer has earned throughout the year. A 1099 is important since it’s used to record non-employment income earned by a taxpayer. Whether it’s cash dividends paid for owning a stock or interest income earned from a bank account, a 1099 may be issued.

There are many types of 1099 forms since there are various ways to earn non-employment income. For example, as of the 2020 tax year, independent contractors and freelancers who earned $600 or more in non-employment income should receive a 1099-NEC.

Although taxpayers may not like receiving tax documents, such as 1099s, and businesses probably like issuing them even less, 1099s are important since they keep track of income that isn’t recorded in a person’s wages or salary. The Internal Revenue Service matches nearly all 1099s and W-2 forms against your Form 1040 or other tax forms. If they don’t match, it sends out a CP2000 notice to taxpayers, saying they owe more money.

Writing Off Your Expenses As An Ebay Seller

Along with filing your own income taxes as an independent contractor, you must keep track of your own deductible business expenses. Many eBay sellers think by only working part-time that they donât have to track their expenses.

Keeping a detailed and organized record of all your expenses is required to lower your tax bill. If you donât, then your tax bill could be higher than the profit you made. That means that you could still pay taxes even if you didnât make money in your business.

Avoid losing money by keeping your personal and business expenses separate. The best way to separate your expenses is by opening a business bank account and have an online 1099 expense tracking app do it for you. When your expense tracking is automated you donât have to worry about keeping those pesky receipts or filling out long excel documents.

The most common deductible expenses for eBay sellers include:

To report these tax deductions you will need to fill out a â1040 Schedule C Profit or Loss From Business Formâ. This will include the eBay income from your 1099 form and the expenses that your business had in the last tax year. Here is a list of deductions for independent contractors.

Typically, income that has been reported on a 1099 is taxable. However, there are many exceptions and offsets that reduce taxable income.

For example, let’s say a taxpayer has a gain from the sale of a home, meaning the selling price was higher than the original cost basis. The taxpayer might not owe taxes on that gain since they may qualify for an exclusion up to $250,000, depending on their tax situation.

There are due dates for these payments, and you can be penalized if you dont pay them in time. Due dates are as followed:

    • 1st Quarter Due April 15th
    • 2nd Quarter Due June 15th
    • 3rd Quarter Due September 15th
    • 4th Quarter Due January 15th

    Example For Independent Contractors

Suppose youâre a freelance graphic designer, and a local coffee shop called Whole Latte Love pays you $1,000 to design their new logo.

You do the work, and they love it. Come tax season, they send you a Form 1099-NEC, just like theyâre supposed to.

Now suppose you donât hear from Whole Latte Love for a couple years. They eventually come back and want a light design refresh of their logoââsomething more minimalistâ. You get the changes made in one day, they love it, and you bill them for $450.

In this case, they would not send you a 1099-NEC because you didnât do $600 of work for them. However, youâll still need to report that $450 income on your tax return, and pay self-employment and income tax on it.

    Requesting A Duplicate 1099

  • Select option 2 and follow the prompts.

You must use the official printed version provided by the IRS, which you can order via the IRS website. Do not use the 1099-MISC that you can download from the IRS website because it is not scannable, and the IRS might penalize you for doing so.

Although anyone can file 1099-MISC forms electronically with IRS e-filing, all businesses that file 250 or more 1099-MISC forms in one year must use the IRS e-filing system.

Will You Owe Taxes On Your Investments

There is a common misconception when it comes to investing. Some beginners think you only get taxed for when you withdraw the money from your Robinhood account to your bank. This is a terrible mistake that can come back to bite you.

Every time you sell a stock, ETF, or cryptocurrency, you will incur what the IRS considers a taxable event. Whenever you make a stock sale, you might owe taxes on that transaction. Even if you reinvested your profit by buying more stocks, you will still owe taxes on that. The same goes for any reinvested stock dividend income. To figure out an estimated amount of what you will owe the IRS, use a 1099 tax rate calculator.
